~9~Makoto
~Secrets~
I sighed to myself in anger as Shiro stormed out of the room and out to Sebastian.
“I’m gonna have to tell him at some point,” I mutter to myself as I finished with my bandages. My injury wasn’t healing the best like Shiro’s was. I was actually having a lot of problems with mine. The red color of the scars had started to darken and it had bits of black in it.
What also didn’t help was the fact I couldn’t sleep at all anymore. I ran of energy boosters because of my lack of sleep. Whenever I slept, the dreams would come; leaving me freaked out and scared. I knew they might not be really, but I was so worried for Shiro I had to hide it from him. As I had said early, ‘some things are best left unknown.’
Sighing once more, I searched around my room for another top and pulled it on, careful not to get it caught on the bandages.
I walked out to the lounge and dining area to find Akina standing at the table, a bag of food by her side. She spots me and smiles.
“Mako! Glad you could join us. I brought you all chicken nuggets and chips, along with white bread, tomato and barbecue’s sauce and a bottle of coke!” Akina exclaims, making us all smile. No one could turn down this meal. It smelt to divine to not want to eat within seconds.
I made a point to sit down next to Shiro, hoping to be able to have a private conversation with him while we ate. Sighing, I waited as Akina handed us all a Styrofoam container of food and I couldn’t help but smile. In the old days, mother use to bring it home from work on a Thursday night. Thursdays were chippy night and I always made sure I was home for dinner so I wouldn’t miss out. I frowned slightly at the thought of mother. She was everything to me and I missed her dearly.
I was doing the best I could and the best I could do was to do everything in my power to protect Shiro. Even if it meant dying.
I was pulled from my thoughts when someone snapped their fingers in front of my face.
“What?!” I exclaim, wanting to know why they had too ruin the perfect moment of remembrance.
“I asked you if you wanted the chicken salt,” Sebastian says. I nod at him and take it from his hands and shake it onto my chips.
“So, Sebastian I hear your name is. I’m Akina Carter. I am one of the nurses at the local hospital and I live down the hall from these two weirdos.” Akina says, making Shiro and I chuckle.
“Pleasure to meet you Akina. Names Sebastian Reeves. I’m an old friend of Mako. We lost contact when he began his life as a criminal along with his brother here. I didn’t know he had a twin brother till about two weeks ago when I realized they were twin shadows I was like, what?!’ Sebastian says over dramatically, making me laugh. The others raised an eyebrow at me laughing but continued to join in. I shook my head at them in surprise. They really were an odd bunch.
The dinner conversation continued on and I tuned out half way through, before picking up my dinner and walking into my room. I sat down on my bed and pulled out my book on magyk and flicked it to the page I was up too and continued to read as I finished my dinner.
I recently had started to read about the Darken’s home planet. It seemed this book had been written by one of the darkens and they had put a lot of interesting stuff in here. On one page it read;
‘The Darken’s, along with the one they call Master, found a way to get to the surface of Zinare without be sensed of found. It is said that some Darken have a abilities similar to the ones we call Masters. Abilities like this are rare now as ‘The Original Darkens’ are fading as they are unable to leave as long down in the thicker atmosphere. Also, most Darken’s hate lots of light as it makes them temporarily blind.’
My eyes widened at this as I knew one of the weaknesses. I scrambled off of my bed and out into the living room, making Sebastian, Shiro and Akina stare at me.
“I …. Found out there weakness!” I exclaim proudly. The three of them look at me in a mixture of confusion and shock.
“Whose?” Akina asks.
“The Darkens. They can’t handle bright lights or large amounts of light. This is why most of the guards who follow us aren’t that strong. They are just humans, while the ones at night are Darkens!” I quickly exclaim and wait for a reaction. The three nod then realize what I said and exclaim in their own way.
“That,”
“Is,”
“Amazing!” the three say and smile at me.
“Am I fabulous or am I fabulous?” I say before turning around and walking back out of the room again, my nose once again stuck back in the book.
“There is so much we haven’t learnt or even read about. This must be by a researcher who works under the eyes of the….” My muttering was cut off when I heard yelling through the house.
I see all three of the people from my living room race towards my door.
“Hide. They know Bastian is here and they recognize him! ”Mako says as they pass.
I sigh and stick my hand out, grabbing the three and pulling them into my room before shutting the door and pulling them towards my closet.
I let go of their shirts to look for the knob.
“How are we supposed to stay hidden in there?” Sebastian asks me. I shake my head and open the hidden door, not looking back at their faces to see their reaction.
“Hurry up and get in here.” I whisper and the three quickly enter after me and I pull my clothes across once more, grab my three emergency bags, Bastian’s bag and my mechanic chest and close the door after me, leaving the door unfindable to the guards. Shiro clicks his fingers and the room lights up. I pull a flash balloon out of one of the bags and shake it, before letting it float into the air, the whole room lit up.
“When did you find this place?” Shiro asks. I shrug.
“A while back,” I quickly reply.
I heard something fall an then see Sebastian had kicked a pile of my books over.
“Woah. I thought they had gotten rid of all books about magyk.” He mutters only loud enough for me to hear, but Shiro’s head shoots up and glares at me.
“So this is where you have been? Reading books about magyk and not told me?” He exclaims in my head I rub my forehead and look at my brother. Betrayal and shock filled his face.
“Look. I didn’t tell you in case we got caught one day because then I would be the only one in trouble!” I yell back and turn away to look around for the trap door I had seen when I first came in here. I spot it hidden behind a bookcase and quickly move towards it. I push the crates off of it and pull it open before turning to the others.
“Down here guys and someone grab the balloon,” I add before pulling out another balloon and throwing it down in front of me before I make my way down the ladder and into the tunnel below. The tunnel filled with the yellow light from the balloons and you could see all the dust and cobwebs.
“How old is this place?” Shiro asks.
“Well, looking at the structure and materials, I would say twenty years, give or take a couple of years,” I say as my eyes look at the metal supports, holding up the roof and supporting the walls.
As we walked, we knew we were getting closer to the edge of the city when vines and leaves were sticking out of the top and sides of the tunnel. We came to another ladder before I climbed up, checked around for the cost to be clear and then got out, getting Sebastian to pass me up the bags once I was out. Then, I handed a bag to each Akina and Shiro and Sebastian grabbed his and I put my chest into my back pack.
“Sorry about the clothes Akina if you don’t like them. I sort of hacked your apartment code and entered to grab your clothes, seeing you were nearly always around us,” I tell her as we began to walk and I pulled a map from my bag and throw a hoodie at Sebastian.
“The clothes will be fine. Thank-you, but I will kill you later for going into my house,” Akina says with a smile. Sebastian pulls the hoodie on, hiding his face under the hood. I pulled on my own hood, as did Shiro and Akina. I looked at my map, finding where we were and where we needed to be going to head on to the next place.
“Shiro! Get up here and look at this map cause I can’t read this too well and you are amazing at it,” I tell Shiro mentally, feeling too tired to talk. Shiro nods and moves up beside me and takes the map from my hands. I nod at him and keep on walking. I pointed my hand at my face and let icy cold water splash my face, keeping me awake. Shiro looks at me and gasps slightly. I look at him and raise an eyebrow at him.
“When was the last time you slept?” He asked and I realized the makeup I wore to hid the bags under my eyes had come off with the water.
“Just drop it Shiro. I don’t want to speak about that,” I tell him quickly. Shiro stops me walking and doesn’t move from in front of me.
“No. I ‘dropped’ the questions about your scars yesterday and I’m not just dropping it again. I am your brother. Your TWIN brother. I care of you!” Shiro says, making Sebastian and Akina exchange looks then look at us.
“Look. Stuff happened Shiro. And this is the consequences and outcome of those issues. I will tell you Shiro, but this isn’t the time or the place for it. “I say and try and move around him. Shiro puts his hand out to stop me and I couldn’t help but wish I was water.
It was then I felt something go through me and looked down to see my brother’s hand was wrist deep inside my body. I hear Sebastian and Akina exclaim and guessed it had somehow gone right through me.
“Umm. Well. That is something you don’t see every day,” Sebastian mumbles. I sigh and walk off ahead of Shiro who calls out after me. I don’t listen to him and pull out a set of headphones and put them in, before turning up the music to block out nearly everything up.
“Mako! I’m so….” I cut off Shiro’s mental ability to talk to me by putting up a wall.
Hours seemed to pass with me being in complete silence ahead of the others. I heard the brief footsteps and see Sebastian hand fallen in step beside me. I pull out one of my head phones, knowing Sebastian was wanting to talk to me.
“Mako? When are you going to tell him? About what you know?” Sebastian asks. I shake my head and look at the sky.
“Not anytime soon. I can’t worry him like that. It would scare him and worry him too much,’ I tell him and sigh.
Sebastian nods at my answer and remains beside me. I left the one earplug out, listening to Sebastian as he made small talk with me. We were all getting tired and the moon was reaching its highest peck. I sighed and turned to the two behind me.
“We will stop for the night in the bushes to the left. There is a sleeping bag in your bags so you can use them tonight. I will stand guard first, then Seb, swapping with each other half way through the night. You two sleep as we need you rested to read and direct us tomorrow Shiro and you in case anything happens medically wise. “I instruct before walking over to the bushes to my right and walking over them before walking over to a tree and climbing up it to sit guard. The others followed and took refuge in the same tree, just on the branches above mine. I pulled out my sleeping bag and wrapped it around myself to keep myself warm. Sebastian sat down next to me and Shiro and Akina were on the branch above us.
Everything went silent except for the crickets, which were around the base of the tree. Seb agreed to take first watch so I laid down, and tried to rest my eyes and maybe, even sleep would come.
