Chapter 1
Magnolia's P.O.V
I often wonder what my life would be like, had things been different. Had I not been the only one to survive. Had my parents or, my twin brother also survived. Where would I be now?
Probably at home in California. In the swimming pool with my brother, eating ice-blocks and complaining about how hot it was. But, instead I was in La Push, Washington, permanently relocated to my grandparents place.
La Push Washington, I wasn't going to even give it a chance. Why would I? I hadn't seen my grandparents in 8 years. The family I knew and loved, are dead. I'm alone.
We had been coming home from a family dinner night out, when a stolen oil truck had plowed into the front of our car. My parents were killed instantly, my brother in the resulting explosion, and me? I had survived with nothing but a scared mess of a back and neck, to show for it. At first I had screamed and yelled at my reflection. I believed that I had gotten away to easily, as they lost their lives, and I got to keep mine, with no reason, or purpose.
I glanced out the window of my recently new room as the sun tried to make an appearance. I hadn't said a word since that day. I glanced down at the sharp, intricate, silver, scissors that lay in my lap, then took a final glance around the room, at what my life had become. I stood from the window sill and carefully placed the scissors into the long pocket in my brown skirt. I'd made up my mind, I realise, I'd made up my mind the day that it happened.
I quickly and quietly made my way down stairs and out the back door. My grandmother checks on me every hour, to make sure I'm okay. I think they worried I'll do exactly as I'm going to. I hurried out into the woods behind their sweet, barely two story, wooden house. I needed to put as much distance between us as I could. I only have half an hour before Gran will come to check on me, realise I'm gone, and call a search party.
I know they had hidden razors and other dangerous object from me, as subtly as they could. I had never let on that I would take my own life. Never harmed myself either. But somehow, grandpa knew, and had warned grandma. Since my arrival two weeks ago, they had hovered like flies. I waded my way threw the trees and over the logs at a quick jog. I began to get tired and slowed down to walk. I had run out of time already. Grandma and grandpa will know that I'm gone by now, and come out to search for me in worry. I hated to do this to them, but I had nothing left to live for. It wasn't fair that I got to live and they didn't. What made me so special? Nothing. That's what.
I stopped as I came out into a clearing. My breath caught at the sight of the beautiful meadow. It was covered in green grass and rich purple flowers. The sun peaked out from behind the clouds momentarily and it grew in beauty, before the sun slipped away again. I breathed in the sweet air. Thought meadow was full of flowers, the air was only gently sweet, the flowers not carrying to heavier scent. I moved a little further and stopped near the center of the meadow. I slowly kneeled down on the grass, surrounded by the richly coloured, purple flowers. The breezes blew gently again, and I relished in the fresh, sweet smell. The meadow brought back an old lullaby my mother used to sing to my brother and I when we were young. My heart clenched and the thoughts swirled in my head, suddenly I felt like I couldn't do it.
I heard noise ahead of me at the edge of the woods. In a gust of wind, leather boot clad feet appeared in my down casted vision. I knew that the man was not, could not be human. To move that fast, and in silence? But I couldn't care less, even as I felt his ill intentions.
"May I make a request?" I asked, before he could make a move, my eyes shifted a little higher and I noticed his face drop from it's cunning smile. He seemed to indulge me, both, confused and intrigued by my lack of fear. I took his silence as an answer.
"Make it quick please. And leave my body as clean as possible. I don't want them to find me all bloated and disgusting, in some revean." I said as I kept my eyes down. I slowly slid the silver pair of scissor from my pocket.
"I planned on doing it myself, but lost the confidence. I'm glad you're here." I added as I finally looked up at the man. He had dark skin and hair that was long past his shoulders in dreadlocks, his eyes were an unnatural crimson. I felt nothing as I looked into deaths eyes. No fear, no tears, no regret.
"I shall grant you both requests. I'm sorry for whatever has caused you to wish this fate upon yourself." The man said softly, and I believed him. He sat down beside me and I turned my head limply to face him and gave him a soft smile. It surprised him as his eyes widened a little. I faced away again as mother's lullaby whispered through my mind. I began to softly sing.
"Deep in the meadow, under the willow.
A bed of grass, a soft green pillow.
Lay down your head, and close your eyes.
And when they open, the sun will rise." Though my voice wasn't very loud, it carried across the small meadow, as the man looked at me in soft wonder.
"Here it's safe, and here it's warm.
Here the daisies guard you from every harm.
Here your dreams are sweet, and tomorrow brings them true.
Here is the place where I love you." My eyes fluttered closed as warm sun finally peaked from behind the clouds and shone upon my face.
"I hope your soul is pardoned, as you are doing me a great kindness." I said honestly, not opening my eyes as I continued to bath in the sunlight, as the cool breeze sent my hair gently swaying. I felt the young man reach his hand out as it came to rest on my jaw. His cold hand rested their as he moved to kneel in front of me, his skin like ice. I kept my eyes closed and continued to relish in the warm glow of the sunlight. His second hand moved to the back of my neck as I shivered under his icey touch. He took a deep breath, and I knew I was ready.
A single tear dropped from my closed eyes. It wasn't one of sorrow or fear, but one of the knowledge that peace lurked so near.
"Here your dreams are sweet, and tomorrow brings them true. Here is the place where I love you." The moment the last word left my lips in a whisper my mind stopped and everything went cold and black.
Third Person
Laurent snapped her head to the side, breaking her neck and killing her. Despite everything, Laurent's eye filled with tears, that being a vampire meant, would never fall. He gently laid her head back in the soft green grass, as the sun disappeared behind the clouds again. He carefully pulled her legs out from under her and laid them out on the grass too. Laurent gently picked up a piece of her ebony hair and tucked it behind her ear as his unbeating heart clenched again. He gently arranged her clothes about her neatly before he stepped away and looked down at her one last time. He could not bring himself to feed off of her after what had just taken place. He closed his eyes a moment and hoped with all his being that she was somewhere else now. In that green meadow under the willow, she had sung of. A place warm and kind, where she was at peace.
Laurent sped away as he heard foot steps in the woods, as someone distantly called a name, he didn't quite catch. As Magnolia's dead body began to cool on in the grass, something began to happen. The grass around her leaned towards her, the blades all moving to press against her skin as the purple flowers closest turned to face her.
Up from the ground reached small green roots and vines that pressed from the dirt and reached up to push themselves against her skin as well. Soon Magnolia's body was surrounded by an outline of greenery that were pressing themselves against her. At the edge of the tree line a grand old willow pushed it's roots through the soil, reaching and searching for her. The great old willow's roots reached Magnolia's body and sifted up through the ground. Two large roots made contact with her, as one pressed itself to her back of her head, near the base of her neck and the other pressed itself to the base of her spine, on her lower back.
Something grand began to transpire as the great willows roots glowed under the earth, glowing brightest where they met with Magnolia's body. The willow tree, leaves began to wilt, as Magnolia's head turned back to face the sky, as the muscles, tendants and bones fused back together. Magnolia's lungs filled with air as the last of the willows leaves turned to dust, and the old trees branches leaned over with an invisible weight as Magnolia drew her first breath.
