"Oh, and Tyler is here."
You suppressed an audible groan for Josh's sake. This was his other best friend, after all. It wasn't his fault that the two of you were constantly arguing and throwing insults at one another.
Josh opened the front door and you followed him inside. Sure enough, Tyler was inside on the couch strumming idly on his ukulele. Normally you would have made some side comment about how out of tune he sounded, but today felt different.
"Hey," Tyler smiled, throwing his hand into the air as some sort of vague greeting.
You had prepared yourself for an insult, and hearing him say hi so casually had thrown you off. Josh didn't seem to notice as he walked over and took a seat in the armchair.
"Guess I'm sitting on the couch," you mumbled, positioning yourself as far from Tyler as you could. This proved to be difficult since he was sitting in the exact middle.
"You look nice today, Y/N."
Ok, now this was just getting weird. You couldn't remember the last time that Tyler had said something remotely nice to you, let alone outright compliment you.
"Uh, thanks," you managed a smile.
"Yeah," he answered. There was a bit of color in his cheeks that hadn't been there before.
You looked to Josh, who merely smiled at you. Something weird seemed like it was going on, but maybe you were just going crazy. At least spending time around Tyler when he was being nice wouldn't be totally unbearable.
Things seemed to be going fine. It was nice to be able to hang out with Josh and Tyler without needing to defend every little thing that you said. As it turned out, Tyler was actually pretty fun to be around when he wasn't being, well, awful. You were starting to see why Josh liked him so much.
"Hey, it looks like my neighbor needs help with something. Do you guys mind if I run over for a few minutes?" Josh asked, looking at his phone in confusion.
"Sure," you answered.
Tyler chimed in with a, "Go for it."
Josh got up and rushed out the door, leaving just you and Tyler. You suddenly became very aware of how your knees were rested against each other and the way that he was looking at you.
"What's gotten into you today?" you asked, using the excuse of changing how you were sitting to pull your knee away.
Tyler stuck his hands in his sweatshirt pocket, "What do you mean?"
"You're being oddly nice to me, it's kind of concerning."
"I thought I would try it out for a day. Besides, people don't usually like to date assholes."
Tyler's eyes went wide as he realized what he had just said. You could practically feel all the interactions and circumstances clicking together in your head.
"That's why you're such a dick to me?" you asked.
"Flirting was never my forté," he sighed.
"It all makes sense now!"
Tyler nodded and let out a long puff of air. You couldn't believe you hadn't realized it all earlier, it seemed so obvious now.
"So, are you willing to go on a date?" Tyler asked.
You smiled, "It's worth a shot, right?"
