You glanced up from your phone to look at Josh. He was sitting on the other end of the couch, his head resting in one hand while he scrolled through his phone. There was a time where something as simple as that would give you butterflies and make you smile, but it had been a long time since you had felt that way.
Your heart started pounding at the prospect of what you were about to do. Quietly, you set your phone down next to you on the couch and slid up to a sitting position.
"Hey, Josh?" you said.
He looked up from his phone. It seemed like he was bothered that you were talking to him, but that was probably just your imagination.
"Yeah?"
"Can we...talk?" you asked, unsure of what words to use.
"Sure," he said, turning off his phone and setting it down next to him.
You took a deep breath and looked down at the couch, "What are we doing?"
"What do you mean?"
You looked up at him. He was looking at his feet, worry evident on his face.
"With our relationship, Josh. We barely talk anymore. Every time you come over we just sit here and pretend like the other person isn't there. We're supposed to be in love, but lately it doesn't seem like it."
Josh pressed his lips firmly together. He was still avoiding looking at you.
"Do you still love me?"
You stared at the side of his face. Everything about it was familiar, from the way that his hair curled to the shape of his lips. It was a face that had once meant the world to you.
"No," you choked out. "Not anymore."
Josh pressed his palms into his eyes and bent over so that he could rest his elbows on his legs. You turned away, unable to look at him anymore without feeling like you were going to start crying.
"I'm sorry," you said, your eyes fixated on the wall.
"I am too," Josh said.
You didn't dare look at him. Even if you no longer loved him like you once had, it still hurt to see him in so much pain.
"I need to go," he said, standing up from the couch quickly.
You wanted to say something. To tell him how badly you still wanted to love him, but no matter how hard you tried the spark was gone. He had been the one person you never wanted to lose, but here he was walking away.
