Drabble #100

Pairing: Josh Dun x Reader

Warnings: Angst, not a happy ending

Word Count: 582

Prompt: "Don't say that."

We need to talk.

You stared at the text message that your boyfriend, Josh, had sent you. Your heart was pounding in your chest and a million different scenarios were playing out in your head, both good and bad.

I'll be over in five.

Your hands shook as you pulled on your jacket and grabbed your car keys from beside the door. You did the breathing exercises that Josh had taught you to calm yourself down, but they did little to quell your insecurity. You settled on blasting music in your car to drown out your thoughts instead.

You stared at Josh's apartment door for a considerable amount of time before actually knocking. Your breath caught in your throat as soon as your knuckles met the wood of the door the first time. Inside, you could hear his footsteps as he made his way over to the door. You bounced on your heels to release some of your nervous energy, although you knew it wouldn't totally go away until you knew what he needed to talk to you about.

The door swung open, revealing a very puffy eyed Josh. You immediately felt your heart sink at his distressed condition. Wordlessly, he opened the door wider so that you could come inside.

He closed the door and you followed him over to the couch. You took your usual spot on one end of the couch, but he took a spot in the armchair, something that was unusual for him. Your hands automatically reached up and you began to fiddle with your necklace.

"So," he started. His voice was thick, an obvious sign that he had been crying. "I-uh-I need to talk to you about something."

You nodded, "You can talk to me about anything, Josh."

He looked up from the spot on the ground that he had been staring at, "I've been doing a lot of thinking, and...and I think it would be better for the both of us if we ended things."

Your stomach immediately dropped and the world around you felt like it was spinning. Tears pressed at the back of your eyes, you could hardly believe what you were hearing. Everything between you had been fine lately...or so you thought.

"Don't say that," you said, your voice barely a whisper.

Josh ran a hand through his hair and down the side of his face, "With me going on tour and you working, I just don't think it's going to work out in the long run. Neither of us are good with the distance, and I've thought it over, I really have, but I just don't think there's a good way for this to work."

You shook your head, "There has to be some way."

Tears were now freely running down your face, despite your attempts to quickly wipe them away. Josh's eyes met your own.

"You and I both know there isn't."

You opened your mouth to protest, but couldn't. Deep down you knew he was right, even if you didn't want to believe it.

"I should go," you said, quickly standing up and heading for the door.

Your door had just barely touched the handle when Josh spoke again.

"Y/N?"

You turned to face him.

"I'm sorry."

"I'm sorry too," you smiled.

You opened the door and quickly stepped into the hallway. Somehow, you managed to keep yourself composed until you reached your car. As soon as the door was closed, you broke down in sobs.
