it has to be a joke...?
Sori POV
"Sori come down stairs!" My mom beg. A few minutes later I could hear her heels clicking down the stairs. I can't believe my dad's boss is sending my father to Norway and my parents are leaving me here alone at the worst time possible. Tomorrow is the day. The day of the first ever purge. Wait, lets start from the beginning.
~Five days ago~
"So Sori, are you going to Simon's party tomorrow?" My best friend Momo asked popping a cherry in her mouth. Me and her where sitting beside each other in the ice cream shop near our high school. Most kids come here during their lunch break to eat or just hang out. Our school cafeteria is in the middle of reconstruction and our teachers told us we could go out during lunch. Just to make sure to come back on time. And since our teacher Mr.Kim is very strick we try to make it back in time.
"Not plaining on it. But who knows, I may get bored and just drop by for awhile." I said taking a small bite of my ice cream.
"Did I just hear right? The Hwang Sori might attend a party!" A classmate of mine name Sehun said leaning back in his chair.
"Oh shut up. You are just jelouse because you can't go." Momo said sticking up for me.
"That's because he has a broken leg." I said taking another bite of my ice cream not looking at him.
"What do you mean by broken leg? I don't have a broken le-" He was cut off by his chair breaking and everyone's laughter. Even thought I wasn't looking at him I knew his face was red from hate and humiliation.
"I was talking about the chair." I said standing up.
"Why can't you just say that! I swear sometimes you can be a real witch!" Sehun yelled trying to stand up. His friends who's names I can't remember all rushed to his side helping him up. I just walked passed them still hearing Momo laughing behind me.
"I can't believe she did that to you man. Are you alright?" I could barely hear one of his friends ask.
"You are so cold Sori. I swear one day someone is going to get tired of your shit and really hit you back." Momo said walking beside me. She was still holding her ice cream taking large bites.
I haven't always been this rude, cold, mean, or whatever else you can think of. No I use to be shy and quiet, never really messed with anyone. It was all until this kid in middle school cut my hair. After so many years of being quiet and letting everyone just walk all over me I just snapped. So many years of being called names or pushed around just came out on this one kid.
After that no one really messed with me until I got into my senier year of high school. That was the year I met Momo and became friends with her. Like me, she can sometimes be a cold person and quiet. But in a flash she can turn into this bubbly, can't stop laughing type. I swear sometimes I think she is biboler, but she's the greatest friend I could ever ask for.
Momo on the other hand became one of the most popular girls in school on the very first day. With me being friends with her also gave me a slight popularity. People who use to bully me and the ones who complety ignore me are now telling me good morning everyday. It's crazy how things can just turn out.
"But do you think your parents will let you go to a party?" Momo asked as we walked back to the school.
My parents on the other hand are incredible people. My father is one of the best Anesthesiologist in all of South Korea, third best in all of the world. A Germen man ranks first and then a Sweden man comes second. And my mother is one of the best surgeons, with this power they seem to rule more then the president.
At work both of my parents are very serious people who work extremely hard on their jobs. But at home my parents are the goofiest people you could ever meet. My mom loves to go around and pull pranks on me and my dad. It's something she is really good at. My dad still wakes up every single Sunday to make me chocolate pancakes which to some people can seem pretty lame but I really love these little things my parents do.
Even being the fun parents they are, they can be strict most of the time. I remember one time I snuck out to just go hang out with Momo for a few hours at this nearby skate park. My parents somehow found out and I was grounded for five whole weeks. I could only go to school and then come home. I couldn't go on my computer, hand phone, or even watch tv. It was the most depressing time of my life.
"I don't know. I might have a good chance of asking tonight, so I'll give it a try." I said pulling up the strap on my bag.
"Why is that?" Momo asked.
"Because my parent's favorite show comes on, they'll be so distracted by the show they'll say anything to just get me to shut up." I said laughing a bit.
"Oh so cleaver." Momo said throwing away her ice cream cup in a nearbly trash can.
~~~
The rest of the school classes were boring as ever, but I tried to stay awake as much as possible. I know my exams are coming up pretty soon and I don't want to fail this year. Even if I may not become successful like my parents I still want to do something good in life.
Once I got home I called out for my house keeper Mie. Mie has been my house keeper for most of my life, she's one of the nicest people you could ever meet. But unlike me she is very hipper and cheerful. Both her and Momo have to be my little rays of sunshine. I started to look around my house for Mei but she was no where to be seen. This house is so big she could be upstairs and couldn't hear me even scream.
In my opinion this house is way to big for just three people. I hate it that my parents stay one side of the house while I stay on the complete other side. If one side of the house caught on fire either I or my parents would be dead first.
After I took a shower and did my little homework I had I decided to call up Mei. It took her about ten rings just for her to answer.
"Hello." I said holding the home phone in one hand, and a cold soda in the the other.
"Hey. I was hoping you seen my note, but I guess not." Mei said. I looked at the fridge knowing everybody sticks notes on the fridge. But to my surprise there was nothing.
"Where did you put it?" I asked.
"On your bed. I thought you would just run in and take a nap or something." She said.
"Oh. No I just took a shower and did my homework at the dinning room table. I was just calling to make sure you were okay." I said sitting the soda down on my counter.
"Oh yes. It's just my daughter had to take another shift and I had to go pick up my grandson. I laid out some money for you to order something if you like. I hope you don't mi-"
"You know I don't mind Mei. I was just worried about you. Well I let you get back to your little man." I said before hanging up.
A few minutes later I did what Mei said and ordered some pizza. I mean who can go wrong with pizza, especially when you are alone on a Tuesday night. And with the fact I haven't had pizza in forever. Maybe after the pizza I can find some left over ice cream from my father's obsession with it. Or maybe some of my mother's left over candy. She has a bad habit of eating candy after midnight.
None of us really know why either. But both me and my father sometimes sneak some of it. It's alright because she never really knows any is gone. She always thinks she ate it all and forgot. I know it's wrong, but we always like to pull these little things on each other. It's just how my family goes.
As I felt the cold floor beneath my feet as I walked down my hallway and turned up the heat. I next grabbed a little throw blanket and walked back into my living room. I flopped down on my couch turning on the tv. I flipped trough a few channels before picking a good action movie. I prefer action more then anything else especially horror movies. Some people may call me a cold person, but I still get scared like anybody else. And especially with horror movies. A childhood friend once made me watch this North America movie called IT. Ever since then I've been terrified of clowns and any type of horror movie. Momo loves to torture me with watching them, mostly when we go to the movies together. What a friend I have.
I was just getting through a really bloody scene when my door bell ringed. I looked over at the clock on my wall to see that the pizza was ten minutes late. I felt a smirk appear over my own face. Maybe I can get a discount. I started skipping my way to my front door and unlocked it.
"I'm really sorry I'm late. There was a really bad car crash and-" He stopped talking once he saw my face.
"Out of all the pizza boy's it has to be you, Sehun." I tried closing my door but his foot was stuck in the way.
"Hey! I don't want to be standing here as much as you wish, even though your house is freaking beautiful!" he took a step back looking more and more at my house. Eyes and mouth wide.
"And." I said trying to wait for him to finish his statement, even though I could care less.
"Oh. But it coast a lot just to get here so-" This time he didn't cut himself off, but instead the a load noise was coming from inside my house.
"What are you watching?" Sehun asked trying to stick his head through my front door.
"A action movie. But that sounds more like breaking news. Hold up." I said closing the door in front of his face. I saw him raise his hand to speak but I really didn't care for what he had to say next. I walked back into my living room to see the movie I was watching was no longer on, but instead our new president.
"I've thought this over and over in my head and I present this Friday, March 21 as national purge day! Every year on this day all crime including murder will be legal for a whole twelve hours. It starts from 7 p.m-7 a.m." he keep on going but I stopped listing to him when I heard something drop behind me. I quickly turned around to see Sehun standing behind me. My box of pizza was know laying on the floor.
"He's kidding, right?" Sehun asked. I could hear he was scared by the shakiness in his voice.
"Of course. No such thing can happen. Twelve hours where everything is legal. That can't happen. Not even in this time and age." I bluntly said grabbing the remote to turn off the tv. But before I could Sehun grabbed the remote from my hands.
"Hey. This is my house!" I shouted trying to grab it back but because I was so short and he was so tall I couldn't even come close to grabbing it in the air.
"I'm still trying to listen to it." He said trying to shush me.
"Well I'm not. It's my remote. Now go watch it at your house." I snapped.
"I really doubt this is your remote. It's probably your parents. And besides my house is on the other side of the city. I won't make it back in time to listen, now shush. He's coming back on." Sehun took a seat on my couch sitting on the very end like he was waiting for the big jump scare in a dark horror movie,
I reached down to grab the pizza box when I felt a cold chill. I looked back towards my front door to see it wide open. Okay I get it that when I slammed the door in his face I didn't lock it, but come on, once he walked inside he couldn't at least close it behind him. I stomped over towards my door feeling the cold night air hit my body. Why does it have to be so cold? Before I could close the door I head Sehun start to scream. This time it was me who dropped the pizza box.
"What!" I yelled running back towards the living room.
"He's sa-saying that all crime will be legal for twelve hours. And that if something happens, the police, firemen, or anyone else will not be available." Sehun stared hyperventilating as tears rolled down his face. Oh my god. He's really scared. I didn't know what to really do in a situation like this, so I just walked over and started to rub his arm to comfort him.
"Sehun it's okay. It has to be a joke. Nothing like this could ever really happen. Just calm down." I said trying to get him to sit back down on my couch. After taking a few more deep breaths he finally sat back down. This time I really turned off the tv before this new crazy president started talking more crap.
"I never told anyone this before but I-" Sehun begun to say. I started thinking of all the possible things he could say, but I was never prepared for what he was about to say.
"I live alone." He never looked towards me as he spoke. I guess because he thought I would judge him.
"Wait. Really? Where's your parents?" I asked.
"They live in France at the moment. They let me stay here to finish up school but if something like this really happens Sori. I can't stay in my apartment all alone. My neighborhood is already on the 'watch' list. I wouldn't last a hour in that place. Someone would probably try and target it first." He was slowly taking breaths but I could still hear the panic in his words.
"Sehun for the last time. Something like this can't really happen." I tried saying it to calm him down.
"But the president was just on talking." he said finally looking up at me. His eyes were now slightly puffy from crying.
"It's pr-" I started to say.
"Where home!" My mother sang walking through the door.
"Why isn't the door closed? Are you trying to let in the cold air?" My father asked.
"Sori?" My mom called out.
"Um. In here." I said. Instead of my mom walking through it was my dad. He didn't even bothering looking at me as he seen a pizza boy sitting on my couch.
"Yum! Pizza!" My mom shouted grabbing the pizza box of the floor. She reached inside and grabbed herself the biggest slice.
"Sori. Why is the pizza guy sitting on our couch crying?" My father asked in a serious tone.
"Please don't tell me you shouted at him like you did the nice church people." My mom said.
"I didn't know they were from the church! It was nine o'clock in the morning on a Saturday, I was just trying to sleep!" I shouted trying to defend myself.
"Answer the question young lady." My father said.
"I was just ordering pizza when I saw it was a classmate of mine. I was about to kick him out, I mean give him money when the news broke through. This new president is insane. He says this Friday will be the day of the first ever purge. Where all crime including murder will be legal." I said mocking his annoying voice.
"Oh yeah. We already know about that." My mom said with a mouthful of pizza.
"Okay. Then can you please tell Sehun over here that it must be some kind of sick joke so he can stop crying on the couch?" I asked.
"Oh no it's real." My father said.
"What!" Both me and Sehun said standing up.
"All of it. Yeah. This Friday will be the first ever purge. For twelve hours every crime will be legal." My mom calmly stated.
"How is that possible!?" I shouted. Now I was the one panicking.
"There was vote. And 23 people out of 25 people voted yes. It's nothing you kids have to worry about. I really doubt anyone will really try and hurt you guys on the first year." My father said walking towards the kitchen. I watched as Sehun dropped to his knees with a complete blank expression.
"I'm dead. I'm so dead." He calmly stated.
"How can you guys be cool with this?" I asked my parents as I followed my mom into the kitchen.
"Because this house is so big, and in a safe neighborhood. No one would dare come in here." My mom said.
"Well, maybe. But at least you guys will be here with me." I said leaning agiast the kitchen wall.
"Oh no we can't." My father said popping open a soda and then opening the pizza box. That large pizza I order is almost gone, and yet I haven't ate the first piece. What a shame.
"What!" I yelled enough for Sehun to run in with the same facial expression I had when he yelled.
"Yeah. Mr.Lee is sending me to Norway to help with this patient and your mom has to come as well. Don't worry about this whole purge thing. You will be in this huge house in this safe neighborhood. I really doubt someone will just randomly come to this house to kill you Sori. Even my boss said the only thing he's doing on the purge is watching a movie." my father said.
"You must really not know your daughter. Besides the few people who like her, mostly everyone hates her." Sehun said.
"Thanks." I sarcastically said smiling at him.
"I'm going to hire a body guard to stay outside. Will that make you feel better?" My dad said taking out his phone.
"Me too!" Sehun yelled. Both me and my dad looked at him like he was insane, oh wait he is.
"Son don't you need to be getting home. It's already nine o'clock." My dad said. Sehun slowly started walked towards my door. I followed right behind him to lock the door behind him, but before I could close the door he turned back around.
"I may not like you Sori, and I know you don't like me. But I don't wish death on you, well know one that I can name off. What I'm trying to say is be safe. Okay." Sehun calmly said.
"You too." For once I didn't feel the need to make a smart comment or be rude to him. Even though I'm a complete jerk to him he still has a little concern for me. Gosh, now I feel bad for all those things. After closing the door behind him I walked back into the living room to see my parents laughing at the tv. The large pizza I order was all gone, all that was left was the empty pizza box. I'm actually fine with it, at a moment like this I can't even think about eating. How are my parents so calm with this? How are they okay with just leaving me behind like this?
