21 | Can't Always Get What You Want

2004Tree Hill, North Carolina

Brianna Davis-Scott sat in the living room, writing out a script for a play. Because of her love of theater, and acting, and wanting to be on Broadway one day, she also wanted to try writing a play. "Every night, I watch you sleep. Peace in your dreams I hope you'll keep them. Until your death, with your last breath...-" Brianna cut off as she erased a few lines. She wanted to write a period drama piece but struggled with how she wanted the dialogue to flow.

"Are you writing or planning to kill me?" Nathan Scott asked when he walked inside the kitchen. Brianna turned around and smiled at her husband.

"Uh, officially, I'm writing a play. Unofficially, I'd watch your back," Brianna teased. Nathan smiled and shook his head. "By the way, I found a new car on the internet, it's pretty great," Brianna said.

"Hmm, well define great," Nathan said.

"Five hundred dollars, great, which is thirty-six less than we've got in the wish dish. So, we could probably spring for a full tank of gas," Brianna said and they both laughed.

"Well, you know, my wish was more around a TV... without surround sound," Nathan said. Brianna rolled her eyes, but she was still smiling.

"Well a car will get you off the bus before Keith fires you for being late," Brianna said and Nathan smiled. "Will you just take a look at it? If it's a piece of junk, then we can keep looking," Brianna said and Nathan nodded.

"Okay," He said.

"Deal?" She asked.

"Deal." He said. Brianna smiled as she leaned up and kissed him.

"And um... make sure the trunk is big enough to fit your body into... you know, just in case."

The next morning, Brianna was at school with Peyton, they were walking outside of campus and about to go inside when Mouth approached them with a boy Brianna had never seen before. He had spikey black hair, and he was handsome, she wasn't blind, but he also wasn't her type. "Peyton, Brianna. This is Felix," Mouth introduced them.

"Hi," Peyton said.

"How you doing?" Felix asked in a flirty tone in his voice. He was looking directly at Brianna and he bit his lip as his eyes scanned her up and down.

"Hi, nice to meet you," Brianna said politely.

"Girl, you are totally fine," He said as his eyes scanned her up and down again.

"Dude, I'm totally... married," Brianna said as she held up her hand to show her wedding band. Felix's eyes widened as he looked at the gold band around her finger.

"Really?" Felix asked and then he looked at her stomach. "Who's the father?" He asked. Brianna rolled her eyes, and then she felt an arm wrap around her and she knew it was Nathan because nobody else would do that.

"Little close, aren't you?" Nathan Scott asked as he glared at Felix. He turned to look at Nathan and smiled.

"Oh, I guess it's you," Felix said. Brianna shook her head as she and Nathan turned around and walked away. As far as first impressions go.

She didn't like him.

When Brianna and Nathan got home from school that day, he had her eyes covered because he wanted to show her a surprise he got her. "How much do you love me?" Nathan asked as he walked her into the apartment.

"Did we get the car!?" Brianna asked. She didn't mind catching rides with Brooke and Peyton, but it would be nice to have their own car.

"Well, that's why your eyes are closed," He said.

"There's a car in our apartment?" She asked.

"Bree, come on," He said and Brianna laughed as he guided her. "Alright, come here. Wait a second," He said as he quickly turned Brianna around. She almost lost her balance and she laughed.

"Whoa!" She said. Nathan gently steadied her and then he smiled.

"Okay, open," He said. When Brianna opened her eyes, it wasn't a car, but it was a beautiful marble desk that had a red ribbon over top of it. On top was a desk lamp, beautiful writing pens, a stack of new notebooks, and a laptop.

"Nathan," Brianna breathed out in shock. The set up was beautiful, and she loved it, but they couldn't afford this, and they needed a car.

"Do you love it?" He asked.

"What... What did you do?" Brianna asked.

"Now you have a proper station to write at," Nathan said. It warmed Brianna's heart that he would do this for her, but she wanted them to take care of their necessities first.

"I thought you were going with Keith to look for a car," Brianna said.

"Yeah, we did. Keith said it was no good, so," Nathan trailed off as he pointed to the desk and the setup for her.

"Oh, Nate... you have to take this back. At least the desk, pens, and the laptop. I'll keep the notebooks and the lamp," Brianna said as he shook her head and walked back to the bedroom. Nathan's footsteps were quickly following behind her.

"You don't like it?" He asked. Brianna turned around and shook her head.

"Of course, I like it. I love it, Nathan... it's beautiful, but we need a car. A writing station can wait," Brianna said as she shook her head. Nathan approached his wife and gently grabbed her hands.

"Brianna, we can get a car anytime," Nathan said.

"With what, Nate? Magic beans? Look, I know you've never really had to deal with money before, and that's not your fault, but things are different now. We can't just go out and buy a writer's desk because we feel like it, especially when we agreed on a car," She said.

"Bree! You're an amazing playwright and dramatic actress. I have a good feeling about your acting. Your stage presence during our school plays was amazing. It's going to take you places," Nathan said. It warmed Brianna's heart to know that Nathan actually came to school plays and he had noticed her.

"It means a lot to me, Nathan. It really does, but a writer's desk isn't going to get you to work or school," Brianna said and Nathan sighed.

"Alright, you know what? I was just trying to do something nice for you, okay?" Nathan said. Brianna frowned. She could tell that Nathan was thinking she didn't appreciate his gift when that was far from the truth.

"I know, and I appreciate it, I really do... but we talked about a car, Nate. So, let's just start there, okay?" Brianna said. She sighed as she left the bedroom and went to the kitchen to get water. She walked past the writer's desk and sighed as she looked at it. It really was beautiful, and it would help her so much.

But they needed a car.

Later that evening, Brianna was at the lingerie store with Brooke, Peyton, and Haley. She told them about the gift Nathan got her and then she sighed. "It was a beautiful gift, guys. I'm not saying I don't appreciate it, but we really need a car. We worked so hard to save that money," Brianna said as she put some lingerie she was looking at back on the rack.

"Bree, boys are clueless. I swear to you, I'm thirty years away from giving them up for good," Brooke said and Brianna laughed. Peyton walked out of the fitting room with a black and white suit-looking shirt and a pair of jeans.

"Okay, so what about this? Does this say, let me promote an all-ages club night?" Peyton asked.

"No. Not enough skin. Try... this," Brooke said as she handed Peyton a new top that matched better with what she was wearing. It showed more skin and was a bit shorter. Peyton sighed as she took the top from Brooke's hands and walked back into the dressing room. Then Brooke picked up a bra.

"Oh goodness. That much for two dollies and a piece of wire?" Brooke asked as she held it up in front of herself while she was looking in the mirror.

"You're not going to try it on?" Haley asked. Brooke shook her head.

"Not today," Brooke said. Then Peyton's head came out from behind the curtain of the fitting room.

"Not today? Brooke Davis, this is a shopping day you will never get back again," Peyton said as she threw the suit-top to Brianna. "Hey, listen, if you're still waiting on your ATM card, I can front you the cash," Peyton said. Brooke shook her head.

"Nah, it's cool. My dad just... spaced a deposit to my account... don't know why the same thing didn't happen to Bree or Beck," Brooke said as she gave her sister a playful glare and Brianna smiled.

"Because Beckham and I don't spend our money as soon as we get it. Even though I have money, I don't want to rely on Mom and Dad for everything, that's why when they send me money, I immediately put it in my savings for emergencies and I work at the cafe to have my own money," Brianna said.

"So you're saying you could buy a car?" Haley asked and Brianna sighed.

"I could get a decent used car, but if I flaunt my money, I'll be doing what Nathan is used to doing with money. I'm trying to teach him how to be responsible with his money by being responsible with mine," Brianna said.

"Okay!" Peyton exclaimed as she walked out wearing the new top.

"Ah, now we're talking. If this band manager is a guy, you're golden!" Brooke exclaimed.

"You know, speaking of guys... can we just do five minutes on this Felix person?" Brianna asked. Brooke's face scrunched up in disgust.

"Yes! He is hot and totally vibing on you, married girl. No wonder Nathan's jealous!" Haley said. Brianna rolled her eyes, that was the last thing she needed.

"Okay, but guys, how can he make Nathan jealous? This boy is repellent! I mean he's been here, what? Five seconds and he's already butting in everyone's business, bossing people around, and acting like he owns the place, come on!" Brooke exclaimed. Haley, Peyton, and Brianna gave each other knowing looks.

"What!?" Brooke snapped.

"Earth to Brookie, he's you... in pants," Brianna said and Brooke's eyes widened as she threw what she was holding at her sister. It was a pink top. Brianna laughed as she caught it.

"He is not!" Brooke exclaimed.

"Kinda is," Peyton said.

"I agree," Haley said. Brooke groaned as she looked at them.

"I hate all three of you."

Brianna went to her old house when Beckham called, saying that Brooke needed to talk to them. When Brianna got there, she immediately went to Brooke's room. Beckham was sitting on the bed with her, and Brianna noticed the tears in her eyes. "Brooke, what's going on? What's wrong?" Brianna asked.

"You know how I said during your bridal shower my credit card declined because the bill got paid late?" Brooke asked. Brianna nodded. "It was a lie,"

"So what happened?" Brianna asked.

"We're broke," Brooke said. She started crying more and Brianna joined her siblings on the bed and grabbed Brooke's hand. "Dad's company went under... they're doing this stupid bankruptcy thing and Mom's telling me that we might have to sell the house," Brooke said.

"Well, Steph and Danny will most likely let you guys stay with them if it comes down to selling the house," Brianna said.

"Yeah, we already talked to them. They said there's plenty of room... but this is our house, and I love being rich. I'm good at it," Brooke said and Brianna smiled.

"Is that why Felix is getting under your skin? Becuase he's the rich guy next door?" Brianna asked and Brooke nodded.

"I don't know... maybe," She said.

"Brooke, it's just money. You know, there's so much more to you... more to all of us than being rich," Beckham said. Brianna nodded in agreement.

"Yeah, but that's my favorite part. I don't want to talk about it anymore... Beck, how are things with Haley?" Brooke asked. Beckham smiled as he turned to his sisters.

"Really good. I'm glad we were able to reconnect. She's never seen me as some jock and I'm glad I finally told her how I feel," Beckham said and the girls smiled.

"I'm really happy for you guys, Beck. I know what you're going to say when I say this, but... I miss you guys. I know we're triplets, but we all have our own things going on, so I just really miss you guys," Brianna said.

"Brianna Davis, don't get all emotional on me, I've cried enough today," Brooke said. Brianna smiled as Beckham pulled his sisters to hide side.

"I miss you guys too. Boarding school sucked. There was drama, but it was never Brooke Davis-level drama," Beckham teased. Brooke rolled her eyes, but she was laughing.

"Yeah, but now the drama is about Brianna. Our sister who spontaneously got married," Brooke said.

"Guilty," Brianna said.

"I was a little skeptical before... but I notice things, Bree. I see the way Nathan is with you, and I know he cares for you, and he loves you, and I can see how gentle he is with you and I'm just glad you're happy," Beckham said as he kissed Brianna's forehead.

"Thanks, Beck. You guys play basketball together, so I'm hoping you'll get to know him better since he is your brother-in-law now," Brianna said and Beckham laughed.

"Don't remind me," He said.

"But, in all honesty, I love you guys," Brianna said and they both smiled.

"We love you too."

When Brianna returned to her apartment, she found herself sitting at the writer's station that Nathan got for her and using one of the pens. It was amazing. It wrote so smoothly and Brianna could feel some of the words of the play she was working on pouring from her. She also didn't take the bow off the table, because she wasn't sure if they could keep it. Brianna sighed as she looked at a line she wrote, and she didn't like it, so she scribbled it out.

She ripped the page from the notebook and balled it up right as Nathan was walking inside. "If I would've known you couldn't do any better than that, I wouldn't have brought it home," Nathan teased. Brianna smiled as she looked up at him. She was about to say something, but then Nathan kept talking. "I want to apologize, okay? That was your money too, and I know that your family is loaded, but I also know you don't like to live off of them," Nathan said and Brianna smiled.

"Well, funny story. Brooke just told us today that Dad's company went bankrupt, so we don't have money anymore, for now, I suppose," Brianna said. Nathan's eyes widened.

"Are you okay?" He asked and she nodded.

"Yeah, it's fine. Like you said, I don't like living off them. The allowance that they would send us, I always put in my savings, and I know Stephanie will help if it really comes down to it, but she shouldn't have to. Brooke is honestly taking it the hardest. But anyway, I totally overreacted. Partly because I love this gift and I love you for getting it for me, and also partly because we can't be as careless as we used to be, not if we're going to make this marriage work. Especially since neither of us are looking to our parents as outlets, and I don't want us to have to rely on Stephanie either," Brianna said. Nathan nodded in agreement.

"I know, and you're right. I don't know the first thing about managing money, it was just always around. I know for you, money has also always just been around, but you've always wanted to live independently, it's honestly inspiring, Bree," Nathan said and Brianna smiled.

"Yeah, well, at least you don't have that problem anymore," Brianna said. Nathan laughed a little.

"I want you to keep this station, Bree. You have talent, you need to use it," Nathan said. Brianna frowned, not because she was sad, but because she loved Nathan so much for wanting this for her. But they needed the money more than she needed a writer's station.

"Nathan, I...-" He cut her off.

"...-We're keeping it," He said. He smiled as he leaned down and kissed the top of her head. "Besides, there's an old car that Keith said I could fix up," Nathan said.

"He's going to help you?" Brianna asked and Nathan nodded.

"Yep, and once we finish fixing it up, it's ours to keep," Nathan said. Brianna let out a sigh of relief as she turned around in her chair and wrapped her arms around Nathan's torso.

"Oh, thank goodness... because I really did want to keep it," Brianna said. Nathan laughed as he leaned down and kissed the top of her head while gently squeezing her.

"I love you, Brianna," Nathan said and she smiled.

"I love you."
