Chapter 9: Clean Up

What was once the quiet and abandoned jazz club, was now filled with laughter and life from just the presence of April O'Neil and Donatello Hamato. Working together, the two cleaned up The Dojo, while along the way, talking and making each other laugh. They started by sweeping up the stage and polishing the equipment. They then went off to the main room of the club dusting the furniture, polishing the tables, and then turning the chairs upside down to rest on the tables. It was time for them to begin their final task of the night, sweeping and mopping the floor.

"So, you're a fan of my mother's work?" Donnie said as they continued their cleaning, him with a mop and April with a broom.

"Oh, y-yeah! Back in the day she was my idol!" April continued with a smile, "I still have some of her old records. She's what inspired me to take up singing in the first place!"

"Have you ever sung in public before?" Donnie asked.

"Not really," she told him. "You were the first to ever actually hear me sing. No one really knows that I can sing, not even my dad. Or Casey. And I've known him for years."

"How do you even know Jones?" Donnie asked curiously, "I heard you got the job here thanks to him."

"We've known each other forever," she explains. "We were schoolmates. My dad was always busy so I would have to spend time at his place after school. His parents would look after me for a few hours then my dad would come and pick me up after work."

"Oh, alright, but what about your mom?" Donnie asked, "Wasn't she home to look after you?"

"My mom died when I was very little," April told him softly.

"Oh... I'm sorry..."

"Don't be. You didn't know."

April took a deep breath, stopping herself from tearing up from the thought of her mother and continued, "I remember spending hours at Casey's parent's house listening to your mother's music on the radio. I had all of her records! Then when you guys, her own children, started coming into the spotlight, you, your brothers and sister, you all amazed me with your talents! I knew I wanted to be just like all of you! Singing and dancing on stage in front of a large audience and hearing an adoring crowd cheer your name!"

April happily spinned around, twirling her dress, as she imagined the scenario in her mind. Donnie looked on at her happily, seeing the redhead imagine her dream becoming a reality.

"And someday you will," Donnie tells her with a warm smile.

April looked at him, returning his kind smile with another. She's never met anyone who was so encouraging of her dreams, given that she's never really expressed her dreams with anyone till now, but it was still a pleasing moment. Still, with all of this talk about herself, April's curiosity soon got to her.

"Donnie, can I ask you something?" April asked as they continued to clean the messy wooden floor.

Without breaking his focus to the floor he's mopping, Donnie says, "Sure. Ask away."

"When I first saw you backstage earlier tonight..." April started. She was rather nervous to ask a question she could assume was personal, but her curiosity had to know, "You looked scared. You were fidgeting your tie and your hands were shaking. Were you alright?"

Donnie stops his work, surprised by her question, "Oh... That," he chuckled in a tone of embarrassment, "It's just some performance jitters I get before every show."

"Performance jitters?" April repeats with confusion, "you mean like stage fright?"

"...Yeah. I know it's weird because I've been doing this for so long, but no matter how often I do it I keep getting stage fright. I can barely keep it together during a duet, let alone a solo..."

Come to think of it, April has never recalled Donatello Hamato ever being on stage by himself. He's always been known to sing in a duet with his brother Michelangelo, a musical duo that is very well known and popular among all fans. Or in a group number with all four of his brothers. Despite his musical talents, he's never done a solo song before.

"My dad always passes it off like it's nothing, but he doesn't understand how much it gets to me," April then noticed Donnie's body began to slightly shake.

"When I am up there, I start thinking that I'm not good enough for the stage...that people will hate me if I sing anything because I'm not as talented as my brothers..."

April said nothing, surprised by Donnie's confession. A phobia that he has been suffering with for so long and she never knew. The papers always make him and his brothers seem so perfect, flawless, as if nothing is wrong with them, but maybe there is more to these four young turtles then anyone cuts them out to be. It made April wonder what the other brothers are hiding deep down from the public.

"But, hey! I'll eventually get over it! I hope..." Donnie continues, trying to awkwardly laugh off everything he had said. "Honestly, though, thanks to you and Raph's little situation, you guys bailed me out of singing tonight." Donnie came back to softly laugh at his little joke, but April didn't join in. Instead her face had a look of regret and guilt.

"Hey, are you okay?"

"...I still feel bad about what happened tonight," April said, looking down at the floor in shame, going back to her work of sweeping. "I put your brother in danger and got him in trouble."

"Don't blame yourself for that."

April looked at Donnie, a displeased look on her face. That was not the answer she wanted to hear.

"I keep getting told that, but I know I'm to blame. I mean, look where I am now!"

"Alright, far point. Well, maybe... you'll feel better if you apologize to him?" Donnie suggested. "Raph may not accept your apology right then and there, but him at least knowing you're sorry for what happened could bring you some closure."

April thought over Donnie's advice. She couldn't argue with him. Donnie was right. It was for the best to apologize to Raphael for the situation she got him into.

"It might be a challenge though," April said, "Your brother isn't the most approachable."

"That's true, but it still never hurts to try. And if he gives you attitude I'll be there to back you up."

April smiles at Donnie, thankful for his kind offer. The two then went back to cleaning up the club, April sweeping and Donnie mopping. With their teamwork the two were able finish up their job quicker than they thought. The Dojo was officially cleaned up for the night and ready for opening tomorrow. A job well done for the redhead and the turtle.

"Well, I better head home," April says as she grabs her coat.

"Are you crazy? It's too dangerous for a lady like you to be walking alone in the streets at this hour! I'll get you a cab."

"You don't have to do that."

"No, I insist."

April can't refuse Donnie's offer. April goes back to the employee changing room to change back into her street clothes she wore when she first came to The Dojo. She then leaves the club, escorted by Donnie as he takes her outside. After a few tries, he waves down a cab and opens the car door for her. April informs the driver of her location and Donnie pays up front so April does not have to worry.

"Thanks again, Donnie," April says with a smile, peeking her head out the car door window.

"For promising not to tell anyone of your singing talent? For helping you clean up? For giving advice on your Raph problem? Or helping you get a ride home?" he questionably jokes.

April giggles, "All of them."

"Just wanting to help," Donnie nervously chuckles.

"No, really. I mean it," April says with a warm smile, "I wish there was some way I could thank you... OH! I got it!"

April turns and quickly searches through her purse and pulls out the small rose Renet gave to her early that night.

"Here," she says cheerfully, peeking her head through the cab window again and handing the flower to Donnie.

"A rose?"

April nods, "A friend gave it to me earlier to cheer me up, but I think you need it more than I do. You're a great guy, Donnie, and a talented singer. You deserve to know that."

Donnie softly smiles, accepting the redhead's gift.

"Goodnight, Donnie."

"Goodnight, April."

April rolls up the car window and the cab drives off, leaving Donnie alone on the streets waving goodbye to the yellow car as it disappears from his sights. Donnie then looks at the rose April gave him. Its scarlet petals were slightly crumpled from being in her purse, but it still sustained its beauty.

Donnie smiles at the imperfect flower then lovingly sighs. He takes the rose and tucks it into his front pocket of his coat, letting the flower pop out and bloom, then heads back inside The Dojo. He locks the front entrance door behind him and heads back into the main room, now fully abandoned and cleaned.

"I hope April takes my advice with her Raph problem... Maybe I should talk to Raph and convince him to forgive her..." Donnie thinks to himself. He saw how worried she was about the whole situation. He feels bad April's first day on the job led to disaster, but she still seemed to stay strong about it and wanting to make things better. Hopefully soon she can be on good terms with all of his brothers, especially Raph. That was when another thought struck him, "Speaking of Raph, where is that meathead? I haven't seen him since his fight with Leo..."

Donnie's eyes then shifted over to the vacant bar, seeing the liquor behind the counter all sealed up and ready for tomorrow. Hanging from above the bar were all the crystal clear glasses sparkling from their good cleaning and polishing, but that wasn't what caught Donnie's attention. On the bar counter was a newspaper laying open across the counter, ruining the bar's elegant look.

"Ugh... Casey!" Donnie thought to himself annoyed as he approached the bar counter, "Why bother cleaning the bar when you're just going to leave your junk behind?!"

Donnie then takes the open newspaper and before he crumbles it up, he stops, noticing the article the page was left open on.

"Galactic Gals Burlesque Club! The Hottest Club In NYC! Exotic Drinks and Exotic Dancing Gals!"

Donnie looks at the article with a raise of an eyebrow. He then softly chuckles as he folds up the newspaper and begins to leave The Dojo through the back door. After he retrieves his belongings from his dressing room, locks the final entrance door to the club, and double checks to make sure it's fully secure. Donnie heads home. As he walks down the back alleyway behind the club, he smirks with confidence, "I think I know where Raph is now..."
