Chapter 24: Catching Up
Y'Gythgba didn't plan for a lot of things to happen to her this particular week, but seeing her old childhood friend April O'Neil again was definitely the most unexpected surprise. Though their reunion at The Dojo was short, the two made plans to properly catch up over lunch at the old diner across town known as The Olympia Diner.
Y'Gythgba arrived first, claiming a booth near the windows to look out at the passersby on the street outside. The diner is a small establishment, it once being an old dining cart from a train now attached to a building to expand the seating area and kitchen. Despite the minimum space, that does not stop the busy crowd of hungry customers. The place was filled with endless chatter, the nearby radio blasting the hottest tunes and the non-stop noise coming from the cook in the kitchen, hard at work making everyone's delicious meals.
Spotting her old friend in an instant as she walked through the door, April smiled with an excited wave before quickly approaching Y'Gythgba with an embrace.
"It's so good to see you again, Iggy!" April says, releasing her friend from her hug, "I hope you weren't waiting long."
"No, not at all. I actually just arrived myself. Here, I already got us a table."
The two joined together at their booth, sitting across from one another. A waitress came by and offered the ladies menus. After quickly receiving their drink orders of two cups of coffee, the ladies go to gloss over the menus, however Y'Gythgba noticed her friend's attention was not on deciding what to eat. Instead the redhead was eagerly staring at Y'Gythgba with her big blue eyes. Her fingers intertwined, using them as a resting place for her chin.
"...What?"
"We haven't seen each other in years and you're more focused on deciding what you want for lunch?" April chuckles, "Come on! Catch me up on everything! When did you move to the big city?"
"Oh, well, a little over a year ago." Y'Gythgba tells her, placing the menu down, "I'm sorry I didn't try to contact you, but we haven't seen one another for so long I thought you forgot about me."
"I don't blame you. I thought the same thing..." April takes a sugar packet from the table, shakes it around then tears it open, pouring it into her coffee as she stirred, "So why did you move to the city? Did your dad come too?"
"My father is retired now and staying in a nursing home outside of town. Despite his protests, it's best for him considering his current condition. Besides, my apartment is too small for him and I both to live in together." She takes her coffee and pours a little cream into the cup, turning the dark deverage into a warm shade of brown, "As for me, I came to the city looking for work."
"At the burlesque club?" April questioned.
Y'Gythgba shakes her head, rather embarrassed to share the truth. She felt flustered from memory, how wide-eyed and naive she was back then. Having high hopes to accomplish a dream that never came to be. She was different back then. The memory now feels as if it belongs to someone else entirely.
"It's a little embarrassing, but my intention was to get into New York's ballet academy. Remember how we took ballet classes together growing up?"
April nods.
"I wanted to push myself to become a professional ballet dancer."
"Oh! That's right!" Then April remembered, "But you got stuck working at Galactic Gals instead, huh?"
Y'Gythgba shrugs, "They grabbed me before the ballet school did. Their loss."
"I give you a lot of credit for having a job like that. I mean, sure, you get to dance which I know you enjoy, but also having all those eyes on you, knowing they have perverted intentions..." she shivers from the thought, "You must get a lot of unwanted attention from men on and off the stage."
"I've adjusted to it."
"Still, it must be annoying. It's probably hard to find a decent guy with them all looking at you like that, knowing what they're thinking. Not to mention the Foot Mafia and other sketchy gangs running around, you never know who you're meeting these days. Finding a good date in this town is impossible!"
"Not always," she gently blows on her coffee before taking a slow sip, "I actually did find one."
"Wait. You mean... you have a date?"
Y'Gythgba nods, "Tonight."
"And you thought not to start with that?!"
She shrugs again, this time more coy.
"Well, tell me about him! What's he like?"
Y'Gythgba opened her mouth, rather thrilled to share the information, but then stopped herself. She nearly forgot that her date is the son of her old friend's boss. Small world. Y'Gythgba knew she had to be careful with what she says. She doesn't want it to be discovered that Raphael Hamato will be taking someone like her out on a date later this evening. Who knows what that'll do to his reputation. Or her own.
"He's very... passionate, strong minded, kind, and handsome to boot."
"And how did you meet him?" a thought scared April, "Don't tell me at your job."
Y'Gythgba couldn't help but chuckle. April's guess is not entirely wrong. She did in fact meet Raphael at Galactic Gals, just not in the way April would think. Stumbling into her dressing room trying to escape rabid reporters is not exactly any girl's idea of a cute first meeting story, but it was one she knew she won't forget. Though Y'Gythgba assumed the worst of Raphael when she first saw him, thinking him to be a peeping tom, she quickly realized her judgment was wrong.
After helping him avoid the reporters, Raphael offered to escort her home to show his gratitude. A long walk and a surprisingly pleasant conversation later, Y'Gythgba agreed to see Raphael perform at The Dojo the very next night. Telling herself she was doing it to be nice but in truth she wanted to see him again, and something was telling her that Raphael wanted to see her too. Later that evening, when he was done with his performance, the two got to talking again and realized they have more in common than they thought. Y'Gythgba knew there was something there between them, and with an offer of a date, she was excited to discover what it was.
"Let's just say he stumbled into my life when I least expected it."
Waitress soon came by to the table and took the girls' orders; waffles topped with strawberries for April and a western omelet for Y'Gythgba. Collecting their menus, the waitress left, leaving the friends to continue with their conversation.
"How about you?"
"What about me?"
"Are you seeing anyone?"
April brushes it off, "I've got other things to worry about than my dating life. My career is my primary focus right now."
"Well then, tell me about that. What's it like working at the famous Dojo?"
April's eyes lit up, "Oh my gosh, it is unlike anything I could ever dream of! I've met so many famous stars! You know that actress at the Romero Theater, Renet Tilley?"
"I'm familiar with her work."
"Well, I met her! She is so friendly! She even gave me a flower!! And Michelangelo? So much nicer in person! The news articles don't do him justice for how sweet he is! Leonardo was definitely different then I imagined him to be, and I think I'm starting to get on Raphael's good side now, thank goodness, but the best is Donatello!" she squeals, "Out of everyone, he's really made me feel welcome at The Dojo. I'm proud to consider him my friend. Not only that, but he's been a real big help on my first few days."
"How so?"
"Can you keep a secret?"
Y'Gythgba nods, assuring her friend her lips will be sealed.
April smiles, leaning a little closer over the table, her tone more softer so no one hears, "Well, I'm hoping that someday I'll become a big star like the Hamato Brothers, so Donnie has been giving me singing lessons."
"Really?" Y'Gythgba was surprised by this, "And he's not asking for anything in return?"
"All he wants is for me to help him overcome his stage fright."
"Donatello Hamato has stage fright?" Y'Gythgba eyes widened. This news surprised her. She never would have imagined a famous star to have stage fright, but the more she thought it over, it made sense. Donatello has never had a solo record, his voice only ever being heard in group songs or duets. She pitied him. The thought of having a business that relies on performing in front of a crowd but having stage fright, Y'Gythgba couldn't imagine what that must be like. That was when she recalled the other night with Raphael, telling her of his resentment towards the family business. Saying he feels forced to do a singular thing his entire life. Maybe that is how Donatello feels as well. It seems the Hamato family is not as perfect as everyone makes them out to be.
April then adds, "Don't tell anyone I said that, okay? Donnie seems a little embarrassed by the fact, but he's been doing a great job with trying to overcome it."
"You have my word."
The rest of lunch went on pleasantly. April and Y'Gythgba received their meals, eating, laughing and talking nonstop. Gossiping about the latest news, inside jokes from their childhood to sharing ridiculous bad customer experiences. A quick little catch up lunch turned into hours of endless chatter, but soon the two friends parted ways. Leaving the diner and agreeing to have lunch again, Y'Gythgba made her way home. Her day has only just begun. First a fun afternoon with an old friend and later tonight, a date with a handsome red turtle.
