Third Person POV
The moment the two glasses hit the floor, Max sprung into action.
He ran towards the kitchen area and took out the broom and the dust pan from the narrow closet in the corner. Then he ran back to the living room and started sweeping the broken pieces of glass into the dust pan.
From the corner of his eye, Max could see that Tul was just standing there motionless, his eyes glued to the TV screen while Max continued his task of cleaning up the living room.
Once Max had discarded the broken pieces of glass and mopped off the juice from the floor, he went back to Tul and took his hands and guided him to the couch.
Tul's face continued to stare at the TV screen even after Max had turned off the TV.
Max gently shook Tul by the shoulder.
"Babe, tell me what's on your mind, please," Max gently asked Tul.
"I can't believe it," Tul said, almost in a whisper. "I thought she and her parents had died in a car crash three years ago."
"Who is she?" Max asked, his eyebrows all creased up.
"She... she... " Tul's voice trailed off, shaking his head in utter disbelief.
Max shook Tul's shoulder again, this time not too gently.
"Who is she to you?" Max asked. "Is she one of your many exes???"
Tul kept quiet.
"Answer me, goddammit!!!" Max could no longer hold in his anger and frustration.
"Her family and I were neighbors back when I was in high school and his parents and my parents would talk about how they would like to see us get married when we reached the right age," Tul said in a dull voice. "Then there was the big news about them getting killed in a car crash on their way back from a summer vacation. I never heard about them again after that and my parents never talked about them again either."
"What was her name?" Max asked.
Tul gave him the full name.
"Her last name sounds familiar to me," Max remarked. "Isn't that the name of that big time businessman who was wanted for owing the government millions in tax evasion?"
Tul remained silent.
"Do you think that his fatal car crash and that of his family was cooked up in order to avoid paying the millions that he owed?" Mark asked.
Tul continued to be silent but his face showed that he was in deep thought.
No wonder his parents had never mentioned their names again after that crash. They must have known somehow.
Suddenly Tul stood up from the couch and went into the bedroom and picked up his phone from the bed.
Max followed him.
"Who are you calling?" he asked.
"My mother," Tul replied. "I think it's time that my parents told me the truth."
"What if they refuse to tell you?" Max asked.
"Then I would have to do some detective work on my own," Tul said as he placed the phone to his ear.
"Hello, Ma," said Tul when he heard his mom's voice in his ear.
"What is it, son? I just came from there. What is it that made you want to talk to me again? Do you miss me already, son?" Tul's mom asked in a teasing tone.
When Tul mentioned the name of his parents' long time friends, his mother became awfully quiet on the other end.
"Ma... " Tul prompted his mom. "Did you hear what I just said?"
"I don't want to talk about them, son," his mom said after a long silence. "I suggest that we never talk about them from now on."
"I need to know why," Tul stated emphatically.
"It's none of your business," his mom sounded emphatic as well.
"Yes, it is," Tul said, feeling upset at all the secrecy. "You and dad were talking about marrying me off to Pim, remember???"
Max who was listening in on Tul's conversation with his mom, started to shake his head. Why was there so much about Tul's past that he still didn't know? He started to regret having met Tul. His instinct told him that he was in for a big heartache in the days to come.
