Chapter 7: Tears and Tape
Camille stuffed another forkful of pancakes into her mouth, and wiped her face with a napkin. She looked at Philip and laughed. He had syrup all over his face.
"Pip," She giggled " your face has syrup on it."
Pip scrunched up his nose and gave a toothy grin. He attempted to wipe jis face but it wasn't working to well. Lafayette stood up and smiled.
"I'll go get you a wet napkin to wipe your face with, ok Philip." Lafayette said softly.
"Thank you uncle Laffy." Philip smiled.
Lafayette nodded and went into the kitchen. He grabbed a clean wash cloth and ran it under the warm water from the sink. Then a strong voice filled the air.
"Hey sweetie, what if Daddy drove you and Pip to school on his way to work?" Herc spoke in the dining room.
"Really?" Cami said excitedly "Yay!"
Lafayette smiled and shook his head. He took the cloth into the dining room and knelt beside Philip, reaching up to wipe the syrup off the little boy's face. The children thanked Herclues for breakfast and hopped down from the table, going to gather their school supplies.
Lafayette collects the childrens empty plates, bringing them to the kitchen and setting them in the sink. Then he feels a pair of strong arms wrapp around his waist.
"Are you alright?" Herc whispered, genuine tones of concern filling his voice.
Lafayette couldn't tell him the truth. So he simply nodded. Herclues was less than convinced, but didn't want to make Laf uncomfortable. So he let the conversation drop.
It was moments like this that were the problem. Moments with one sided conversations, and issues that are never resolved. One too afraid to show his true feelings, and the other to worried about digging too far, and causing the already shaky foundation of their marriage to crack. They know that things aren't right between them.
And still they say nothing.
And within moments the silence is cut by Camille's sweet and innocent giggles. Her voice calming Lafayette's fidgety nervs and quieting Herc's most pestering thoughts. Cami was the one thing that both of them could always talk about. She was tape that reattached the torn pieces of their paper thin hearts.
The only problem is that tape, can only fix so much.
