Chapter 13: Help, I Lost Myself
"Hello, barry," Len drawled.
"How'd you figure it out?" Tag asked, not even trying to pretend he was interested.
"I'm not gonna tell you," Len said.
"But I am curious. When did the great Barry Allen become a murderer? Last I heard, he wasn't even ok with other people murdering."
Barry shrugged.
"I think you know why you're here," Tag said.
"Before you kill me, I just want to say one thing.
"Barry Allen. I'm not normally the romantic type. I don't have romantic feelings either. But you changed that, just like you changed me. I used to be a robber, and I wouldn't hesitate to kill. But you convinced me that I should be different. That I should be more. And I am so grateful for that chance, I can't even tell you.
"You were a hero. You helped me become one. And, now, I just want to spend the rest of my life with you. Will you let me? Will you let me become your husband?"
Barry's eyes glazed over.
"Yes," he muttered.
Len smirked.
"Remember Kate? The happy little girl that reminds me of you?"
Barry felt tears slip down his cheeks.
Kate.
"Or Cisco? Caitlin? Iris? Joe? Remember those good memories?"
Suddenly, he was on the ground, sobbing, and then Len's arms were wrapped around him, and he felt better.
"Shh, it's ok," Len smoothed as he carried him to the car that Tag had somehow missed.
...
When Barry was in Len's arms, he remembered something else.
"See, what I'm doing is I'm going to erase your memories. If you get them back, you won't be your happy self. You won't remember you're happy memories, and the painful ones will make you want to die."
He gasped.
"It's ok," Len whispered again.
He was so tired, so hungry, and everything hurt.
He whimpered before passing out.
...
"What did you do?" Caitlin whispered.
"I don't know," Len answered honestly, "I just reminded him of Kate, of when I proposed, of you guys, and this happened. Can you fix him?"
"Maybe. Give us some time."
Len nodded.
"Thank you," he whispered to the unconscious Barry in his arms before he set him on the medical table where restraints awaited him.
...
When Barry woke, he felt different.
He didn't know why, but he did.
He looked around.
He was in the pipeline.
Again.
"Hello? Why am I in here?" he asked. No one answered.
He sighed.
Why did this keep happening?
...
Meanwhile, Team Flash (plus Len) was scared.
What if the cell couldn't hold him?
What if he broke out and killed them all?
...
Barry sat and tried to remember.
Linda.
Patty.
Felicity.
Oliver.
Almost Len.
He gasped.
He had killed people.
His friends (in Oliver and Felicity's case).
"I-I did that," he whispered.
He wondered if they were still here.
He hoped not.
If he was going to completely break down, he certainly didn't want an audience.
...
"Can I please talk to him?" Cisco begged.
Caitlin shook her head.
"No! We don't know how good of an actor he is, and he could be playing us! Not to mention his health..."
"Well, unlike young nerd here, I don't need permission."
Len smirked as he walked down to the pipeline.
...
"Barry?" Len called.
Barry wanted to stop crying, but he couldn't.
"Pl-Please leave," he stuttered. Len walked over to the cell.
"What's wrong?" he asked, making Barry flinch.
"N-N-Nothing," he muttered.
"Barry... what is it?"
"Don't you mean Tag?" Barry snapped.
Len jumped.
Barry stared at him in horror.
"Ba-Barry," Len tried, but Barry was already back in his shell.
He had made Len jump.
With a word.
He really was a monster.
...
Len sighed sadly as he walked back up the stairs.
"How'd it go?" Cisco asked.
Len shook his head.
"That was the hardest thing I have ever had to do," he muttered.
Caitlin and Cisco shared a glance.
"Why?"
"Watch the tape."
...
Barry felt so... dead.
He couldn't believe it, even if it was Zoom's fault.
Being in a cell didn't really help with his murder notion.
Talking with Len just made him feel worse.
He wondered if Team Flash was watching him.
Probably.
After all, he was a murderer.
...
"Barry?"
Barry snapped his head up.
"Why did you do it?" Cisco asked hesitantly.
Barry knew that Cisco wouldn't believe the truth (Zoom brainwashed him), so he would have to make up a lie.
But he didn't have one, so he just ignored the question.
"Seriously, Barry? You murdered my friends, and you won't even tell me why!?"
Barry nodded.
Cisco wouldn't believe him.
Hell, he didn't believe him.
...
"He wouldn't tell me."
Caitlin nodded sadly.
"I wish we knew a telepathic meta."
...
"I think we should head out," Cisco said. "We need a break, and that's the best way to get one."
Caitlin and Len nodded.
"I just wanna talk to him," Caitlin said.
Everyone nodded.
...
"Barry?"
Barry turned.
His expression looked... broken.
Before she could ask, he had a mask (did not mean to rhyme. Sigh).
"Why did you do it?" she asked hesitantly.
"You wouldn't believe me."
"Of course I would, Barry. You're one of my closest friends."
"I..." he looked at her, and she could see when his shield came back.
"Just... leave me alone, alright? I already feel miserable."
Caitlin sighed.
"I wish you'd let me in, Barry," she sighed before walking away.
...
As he watched her walk away, he wanted nothing more than to race after her, or maybe yell for her to stop, that he would let her in, but he knew that would be a stupid idea.
So he just stared, tears filling his eyes silently.
"Please don't go," he whispered under his breath.
But, of course, she didn't hear him.
...
After at least two hours, Barry couldn't hold it in anymore.
Linda.
Patty.
Felicity.
Oliver.
He had killed his mentor.
He sobbed uncontrollably.
He was broken.
Done.
He didn't know what to do anymore.
He had quit his job.
He could never see Joe again because Joe would have to arrest him. Iris and Wally were loyal to their father before him.
Cisco and Caitlin would never be able to forgive and forget.
Len...
Well, he didn't know about Len.
Some part of him said, "You don't deserve him. Or anyone. Look what you did. Not Tag, you. You murdered Oliver. You murdered Felicity. You murdered Linda and Patty. You deserve everything coming and more."
Barry wanted... well, he didn't know what he wanted, not anymore.
"I want to leave," was the last thing he muttered before he passed out from lack of water.
...
"Something's up with Barry."
Cisco snorted. "You think? He murdered four people, two of which were close friends. He's insane. I wouldn't put anything past him anymore."
Caitlin sighed angrily.
"Not like that. I feel like it's something deeper, not just that he murdered people."
Cisco rolled his eyes. "You always want to believe the best in people."
"Everyone deserves a second chance," Caitlin muttered under her breath.
Cisco didn't hear her.
...
"Help. I'm broken, and no one will help. My family believes I'm a monster. I am a monster. I can never see my adopted family again. I'm alone, and I can't do anything about it."
...
"Barry?"
Barry jumped.
Len was standing outside his cell.
"I-I'm fine," he managed to say.
You're so stupid. Can't even say I'm fine right. Bet he's suspicious. He doesn't care. You're just going to get rejected, and it's all your fault.
Barry gulped. He wiped. desperately at his eyes, hoping Len wouldn't ask.
You don't deserve luck.
He sighed miserably.
"What do you want?" he asked.
"Why did you do it? What is going on with you? What happened that night? Are you Barry or Tag? Are you secretly planning to kill us? Are you crying? If so, why?"
Barry turned to face him with puffy eyes.
"Guess that answers question 5," Len muttered.
"Like you even care," Barry said. "You're just trying to get into my head."
"Yeah. I am trying to get into your head." He was shocked when he saw a slight wince appear on Barry's (Tag's?) face.
"But I also care."
Barry looked at him, tears in his eyes.
"I wish I could believe you," he said before falling to the floor.
...
