Would you rather buy a costume or hand-make one?

All of my family's costumes have always been homemade. Like one year we went as Monsters Inc. so we papier mâchéd a green ball for Mike and got a giant googly eye from Dollar Tree,  used our bathroom rug and acrylic paint for a Sully suit, made the Medusa snake hair with toilet paper rolls, etc. etc.

Last night I left my apartment to go to a party, and there was a guy in a grotesque clown suit sitting on the trunk of my car. I called out to him, and as he turned around to face me, I saw that  he held a huge machete.
