Ch. 7: Weaponized
Derek called to tell me that he found Braedan. She had been shot, dying. He had taken her to the hospital.
I stood by the door to her hospital room. She was sleeping. Derek was in the chair next to her.
"She tell you anything?" I asked.
"No," Derek answered. "She's been out."
"Do you think it was Kate?" I asked.
"Most likely another assassin," Derek told me.
The door opened behind me. I turned to face Melissa as she walked past me. Derek stood up.
Melissa walked to the IV, injecting a needle inside.
"What is that?" I asked.
"Naxolone," Melissa answered. "We need her to wake up."
"I thought you said she needed to rest," Derek said.
"That was before I found out the CDC just put the high school under undergarantine with Scott and Stiles still in there," Melissa replied, looking at us.
Oh . . .
Braedan suddenly woke, sitting up abruptly with a gasp. She looked around, dazed and confused, groaning.
"Braedan," Melissa said. "Braedan, look at me." Braedan looked at her. "You were shot, but you're in the hospital now and you're fine. Do you understand?" Braedan looked at me and Derek. Derek nodded. Braedan looked at Melissa, nodding. "Good. Okay, last night, you were in the woods. And you came across another pack. Do you know what happened to them?"
"But I told you they were poisoned," Derek told her.
"No," Braedan said. "No, they were infected. It was a virus designed to kill werewolves. And it did. It killed them all."
It started with uncontrollable shifting. Then weaknesses, inability to walk or stand. Blindness. Then they died.
If that was what happening at the school . . .
*
I was out in the hall, seeing Melissa and Satomi, the Alpha herself.
I could hear Braedan inside as she woke up, clearing her throat. "What are you still doing here?"
"I'm protecting my investment," Derek answered unconvincingly. "Got a lot of money riding on you."
I knocked on the door, walking inside. "Derek. There's someone here we've been trying to find."
Satomi stepped into view.
Derek was in shock for a second.
*
Standing in a surgery room with Melissa, Deaton, Derek, Satomi and me, Deaton explained the virus. "It's a variation of canine distemper. A few years ago, an out break in Yellowstone killed 40% of the wolf population."
"What's it gonna do to our wolf population?" Melissa asked.
"Well, it's been altered to affect quite a bit faster," Deaton told us.
"You mean it's been weaponized," Derek stated.
"The infection took my whole pack," Satomi said.
"Everyone except for you," Deaton said. "That's the real question. Did you not get infected, or are you immune?"
Satomi looked down, unsure.
*
Deaton was covering the wolf's head.
Derek looked at Satomi. "If your pack was infected, then who was doing all the shooting at the edge of the woods?"
"Probably another assassin," Satomi said. "Personally, I'd ratger face a gun than a variation of smallpox."
"Sounds like you're gonna get plenty of chances," Melissa told her.
Satomi looked at me. I looked at her weirdly. "Sorry. I just noticed how much you remind me of Talia. You look just like she did when she was younger." I looked down, the compliment actually making me feel a little bit better. "I used to visit her a lot, you know." She looked at Derek. "You were old enough to remember." She looked back at me. "But you, maybe not. Do you remember me?"
"I remember you taught me a little about the game of Go," I answered. "And I remember the tea. You always brought the tea that smelled weird."
"I brought the tea as a gift," Satomi told me. "Your mother loved it."
"What kind of tea was it?" Deaton asked.
"What?" Satomi asked.
"The tea with the smell," Deaton told her. "What kind was it?"
"Reishi," Satomi answered. I looked up in recognition of the word. "Wild purple reishi. It's very rare."
"It's also a very powerful remedy for sickness," Deaton told us.
I nodded. "I remember. Noshiko gave it to Yukimura to help him after the Nogitsune made him sick."
Deaton nodded, looking from me to Satomi. "Satomi, you didn't get affected because you've been inoculated."
*
"Okay," Melissa said. "Okay, how rare is it? Can we find it?"
"We don't have to," Derek told them. He looked at me. "Our mother kept some of it." He looked back at the others. "It's in our vault."
"And I know where it is," I said.
Derek nodded to me. "Tara, go. I'll be right behind you."
I nodded, turning around and leaving already.
I had to get to the school and get to the reishi before they all died.
Unsurprisingly, I ran for the school.
*
When no one was around the school sign, I opened the main entrance to the vault, running down the stairs.
"Scott, can you hear me?" Stiles called from the other entrance. "Scott!"
Scott used the wall to pull himself up.
I ran past Kira and Malia on the floor to the reishi on the shelf, grabbing it.
Looking back at the blind, weak, blinding versions of Scott, Kira and Malia, I knew there was no way we had enough time to force feed them.
So I did the quickest thing I could think of to get them cured.
Holding the jar above my head, I threw it to the floor, making the glass shatter, the particles that made it heal spreading through the air.
Scott inhaled deeply as he fell closer to the floor, gasping. He looked up to me in relief as I knelt next to him. "Tara."
I opened the other door to the vault, seeing Stiles on the other side.
Stiles looked up, sighing of relief. "About damn time."
"Hi, to you, too, Stiles."
*
I helped Scott stand from the floor. He held onto me weakly.
Kira was breathing heavily, but looked relieved, relaxed as she stood.
Malia was looking in shocked numb at the paper on the floor.
Stiles walked closer to her, kneeling in front of her. "Hey, you all right?" Malia didn't respond. "Malia." He put a hand on her shoulder. "Malia."
Malia instinctively grabbed Stiles' wrist, looking at him, pushing his hand off, reaching for the paper on the floor, standing and walking toward Scott and me. She pushed the paper to my chest. I grabbed it in confusion as she walked out of the vault, not looking back.
I looked down at the last third of the dead pool.
"Tara . . ." Scott trailed off, trying to stop me.
I let him go, taking a step away, turning away.
The names listed: Satomi Ito. Malia Hale. Liam Dunbar. Meredith Walker. . .
Malia Hale?
What the hell?
Malia was a Hale?
She definitely wasn't a sibling. I would've known. Derek had never had a child. Ever.
The only one left . . .
*
Flashback
Peter looked at Lydia. "Now give me the name."
"What name?" I asked. "What are you talking about?"
Peter pulled Lydia to the back of the room, talking in a hushed voice, but I listened in anyway.
Lydia hesitated, looking toward Scott and me. She turned to Peter, whispering the name in his ear. "Malia."
*
Now
Now I knew why Peter had asked Lydia for Malia's name. Now I knew why Peter acted so weirdly when Scott, Malia and I had went to him for help.
Malia was Peter's daughter.
Malia was Derek's cousin. She was my cousin.
I didn't know if Derek knew or not. I didn't care. I hadn't known. Malia had been born a year before me. No one had even told me she had even existed.
I hadn't known.
But Scott and Stiles obviously had.
Scott had known for who knew how long. He hadn't told me. Stiles had know for who knew how long. He hadn't told Malia.
I looked up numbly, folding the paper.
"Tara . . ." Scott trailed off.
I looked at him over my shoulder, crumpling the list in my hand. I let it go, letting it fall slowly to the floor. I looked away, walking toward the stairs that led to the main entrance of the vault, above the stairs.
Scott watched me walk up the stairs without turning back.
Malia walked away from Stiles.
I walked away from Scott.
Because neither of them had told either of us the truth.
Just another betrayal.
