Ch. 10: Monstrous
I saw Brett and a blonde little girl in the middle of the lacrosse field with laser pointers from weapons pointed at their chests in the pouring rain.
"Brett?" the little girl asked. "Brett, what's happening?"
"Close your eyes," Brett told her.
She closed her eyes.
An arrow shot toward them.
I caught the arrow with my right hand, the one with the triskele tattoo on the back. I looked at Brett and the little girl. "Run!"
Brett and the little girl ran away.
I sensed an arrow shooting toward me before I even turned around.
And I heard something metal cutting the arrow in half.
I turned toward Kira. Kira breathed heavily as she looked toward me, the katana raised. "When did you get back?"
"Just now," Kira answered. "How did you know they'd be here?"
"I didn't," I told her. "I never left."
Kira exhaled. I smirked.
The smirk vanished as I looked behind her to the arrow shooting toward her.
I flipped over Kira, landing on the other side. The arrow was about to enter my chest into my heart when I caught it between the palms of my hands.
Kira turned around.
Another arrow shot toward us.
Kira used the katana to destroy it.
Another arrow shot toward us.
I caught it with one hand.
Another arrow shot toward us.
I caught it with the other.
Another arrow shot toward us.
Kira slashed it to pieces.
I slowly stood. Kira held the katana over her head, both of us glaring forward.
*
We had found more than just Brett and the little girl named Lori.
We had brought them to the clinic.
I had called Scott.
When I heard the front door bell ring, I walked out to the front, seeing Scott.
I walked closer to him, kissing him, pulling him closer.
After a long second, Scott smiled a little as he pulled back. "What was that for?"
"Something I wanted to do earlier but couldn't," I answered. Scott smiled, kissing me this time. After a second, I pulled back, keeping my voice down. "Kira's the only one here that thinks we're still fighting." I raised my voice to normal level. "We're safe."
"Safe from what?" Kira asked as she walked in.
I looked back at her. "The assassins from finding them again. For now."
Scott looked back at her. "Is your mom . . ?"
"She's okay," Kira answered. "Healing."
"What about you two?" Scott asked, looking between us.
"Us?" Kira asked.
"Are you guys okay?" Scott asked.
"Right now?" I asked. "Very." I looked at Kira. "Kira saved me."
"And Tara saved me," Kira finished.
Scott sighed with relief. "Did you find him? Did you find Brett?"
"Actually, I think we found all of them," I told him. Kira nodded, both of us leading him to the back of the clinic. "Satomi, this it the one I was telling you about."
Satomi looked back at us. "I know who Scott McCall is."
"Are we safe here?" Lori asked.
Scott looked from Lori, Brett and Satomi to the couple standing next to the window to the man behind Satomi to the couple sitting on the floor.
All of them were scratched up but healing.
Scott looked back at Kira and me. "We're gonna need help." We nodded. "A lot of help."
*
Scott took us to the building Scott, Argent and I had fought Kate and the Berserkers.
Argent walked toward us with a gun raised.
Brett threw a weapon toward him, and it landed in the wall.
Argent pointed the gun at Brett.
Brett roared, shifted.
"Wait!" Scott yelled as we ran closer. "Wait! Brett! This is his place. It's his."
Brett calmed down, turning around and walking toward us.
I sighed.
"Scott," Argent said as he walked closer. "If you bring in guests, you could have called."
"We didn't have anywhere else to take them," Scott told him.
Kira walked toward us.
Satomi walked closer to Argent. "I know this man. He may not remember, but we've met before."
"You can trust him," Scott told her. "I trust him."
"How do we know he's not like the others?" Satomi asked.
"What others?" Argent asked.
"Last night, there was a whole team after them," I told him. I held out an arrow. "And they used crossbows."
Argent took the arrow, looking at the steel arrow head, turning it around.
"They're hunters, aren't they?" Kira asked.
Argent looked up with a cold look in his eyes. "Not if they're killing for profit. Not anymore."
"Can they find us?" Brett asked.
"They might already know you're here," Argent told him. "Maybe they're waiting for dark."
Kira looked at Scott and me. "So we're not safe here."
Satomi looked at us. "We're not safe anywhere. We've been trying to get out for days. Everywhere we turn, we find someone new trying to kill us."
Argent took a step forward, looking at Scott. "If they're coming, they're coming for you, too, Scott. You're all still number one on the dead pool." He looked at me. "And your price just went up 8 million dollars."
"We know," Scott told him. "I know Lydia can get the answer from Meredith. She just needs more time."
Argent looked at us. "That, I'm not so sure we have."
Meredith, The Benefactor.
*
Argent was putting alarms over the whole place to warn us when the assassins would come.
Braedan and Derek were here now.
Scott was looking out the window, walking back toward us. He stood next to Derek and me. "They'll be okay."
Derek looked at Satomi's pack, looking back at them as he started to walk past. "They got claws and fangs. But they're not fighters."
"That's why we called you," I told him as we started to follow him.
"Well, try to remember that I don't have claws and fangs anymore, either," Derek told me as he stopped next to Braedan, turning to face us.
"That's why he called me," Braedan said.
Kira stood next to us. "Am I the only one still hoping this is all just a false alarm? I mean, it's possible we could wait here all night and nothing happens. Right?"
No one answered.
"Scott, you hear anything from Stiles or Lydia yet?" Braedan asked.
"Lydia's still talking to Meredith," Scott told us. "Stiles and Malia are heading to the lake house. They're trying to stop it."
Brett walked closer. "What if there is no stopping it?" Everyone looked at him. "What if it doesn't end till we're all dead?"
There was a beat of silence.
"Then let's send a message," Derek told us. Everyone looked at him. "Let's make tonight perfectly clear to anyone with a copy with that list." He turned around, walking away. "It doesn't matter if they're professional assassins, hunters or an amatuer who just picked up a gun." He turned back to us, holding up the gun in his hand. "Anyone who thinks they can hunt and kill us for money is going to be put on another list, our list. They get a name on our dead pool."
Braedan raised her shot gun, cocking it.
*
We finally heard the sound we had been waiting for.
The alarm went off.
*
A smoke grenade was thrown inside.
Braedan turned to us. "Get back!"
Braedan ran away.
The smoke grenades ignited.
Satomi's pack ran for the back.
The rest of us lowered to the floor.
The hunters started to fire their automatic guns, walking in, surrounding the place.
Argent was standing behind a beam for cover. He turned around, firing his own gun at the other hunters. He ducked back behind the beam.
Derek rolled into cover away from the bullets. He crouched to the floor, firing his own gun.
*
Kira sliced her katana through the translucent sheet to see the hunter behind it. She kicked him back into a shelf. She turned around and ran forward.
Scott grabbed one hunter, spinning around and pushing him back. Scott turned to face him. He tried to shoot him. Scott jumped over him, pushing him to the floor. Taking both sides of his collar, Scott hit his head against the floor twice. He punched him once. Twice. He growled, getting up and running forward.
Satomi spun her weapon as a hunter shot toward her. Argent stood next to her, shooting the hunter. The hunter fell.
A hunter shot toward Satomi and Argent from behind. I grabbed his arm, turning around, making him spin. He tried to shoot me. I kicked the gun down, jumping up and kicking him back into a beam, making him fall. I walked toward him, taking off his helmet, grabbing his gun, using the end to hit hit head hard enough to make him unconscious.
Derek and Braedan stood back to back, circling around each other, staying together, guns raised.
"How many are there?" Derek asked.
"Too many!" Braedan told him.
Braedan fired her gun.
*
I pushed a hunter to the floor, holding him down.
Brett ran out of the smoke.
Scott ran toward Brett. "Get the others back, tell them to hide."
Brett nodded, turning around and went to do as told.
I turned around, walking toward a hunter who was shooting at me. I groaned, holding my shoulder. I ran toward him, pushing him to the floor.
I couldn't see Scott.
But I could hear him. "Tara! Tara! Tara!"
*
Lori was walking alone, looking around. "Brett? Brett, where are you?"
A hunter walked toward her through the smoke, pointing his gun at her.
Lori closed her eyes so she wouldn't see death coming. The laser pointed between her eyes, over her nose.
Scott ran toward him, pushing him away from Lori. Scott growled, pushing the hunter into into the desk, lifting him from the floor and pushing him down on top. Scott knelt over him, yelling as he repeatedly slashed at him. He took off his helmet. He slashed at him repeatedly. He shifted more than he had shifted before returning to normal, slashing the hunter, making him cough up blood. He roared as he slashed at him again. And again. He took off the mask.
Lori closed her eyes so she wouldn't have to see.
Scott's eyes were almost bubbly, black and red. His skin was darker. He raised his hand to slash out his throat.
The hunter held up his hands in scared defeat, blood covering his mouth.
Scott returned to his normal shifted form, seemingly back to his normal self.
Cell phones started vibrating all over the place.
The hunters were leaving.
Everyone was still ready for a fight.
Argent still knelt by the beam.
Derek still had his gun raised.
I pushed up from the floor, looking around, ready to fight if anyone attacked.
The hunter's phone vibrated.
Scott took out his phone, looking at the text.
Scott turned the screen toward the hunter so he could see the text.
The Benefactor: All contracts terminated.
*
Kira, Scott, Derek, Braedan, and I walked toward Satomi and the rest of her pack.
Scott stood next to me.
Argent nodded to us.
Kira looked around. "Is it over? Really over?"
No one had an answer.
Everyone hoped so.
