"I can't believe they treated soldiers so badly in other wars," Cameron whispers to me.
It's movie night at camp.
We're watching another stupid war movie no one wants to see.
It's about two brothers who get drafted in World War 2. The soldiers are all in bunk beds in a long hallway. A drill Sargent is screaming at them.
"Because after the last war, they realized how valuable soldiers are," I mutter back. "I'm gonna go get some water. You need anything?"
"Nope. Go."
I stand up and try to step over all the people who actually pay attention to the movie, mostly little kids.
I approach the water fountain with my water bottle and freeze.
The girl who's filling up her bottle.
She turns around.
"Morgan?"
"La La."
She runs into me and throws her arms around me.
"I missed you. And you were right."
"What are you talking about, La La?"
"Hunter. She's gone."
"What?"
"She was still sick for months after you left. I stayed with her. Then one day a soldier took her away. The next day, I was told to pack my bags. That night, I was shipped here. Haven't seen or heard from Hunter since."
"I'm sorry."
"No. I'm sorry. You were right. That medicine. We swapped powers and downfalls. Her body couldn't take my disease. But she brainwashed me. And I fell for it."
"I knew it."
"Do you hate me?"
"No. You're still my La La. And you're back. Now, let's go watch the movie. I have someone I want you to meet."
We walk away, hand in hand.
