"So, how did you and Laura meet?" Hunter asks me, her voice silky.
"I got wounded, and she was my nurse. Weird how our positions flipped so quickly after." Despite every bone in my body telling me not to trust Hunter and to run, I continue my story. "We were both fourteen at that point. She had been sick for ten years. She still continued her position as a nurse, though. Until she got even worse. We were best friends then; it was a little while after her fifteenth birthday. Her hair started falling out; she slept for almost half the day; her speech even started to slur. It was bad, but I still took care of her. I needed her. Then, you know the rest. You came along, rescued her, and now, well. She's yours. You win."
Hunter shrugs. "Not my fault. La La just likes me, I guess. I mean, I did do something in less than a month that you couldn't figure out in over three years."
That's what gets me.
I pull my fist up, ready to swing at her. "Will you drop the act--"
"Stop!" Hunter hisses and motions near the door. Then I hear the footsteps and faint humming.
I drop my hands to my side and pick up a pillow right as Laura enters the room. "Hi, girls! Thanks for waiting, Hunter. Here's your coffee. Morgan, you can leave now," she says and hands Hunter her coffee.
I stomp out of the room, fuming. I look around the hallway and decide to head outside. All I need is a distraction.
"Morgan!"
I spin around.
"General," I nod at the upperclassman.
"You will be moving to Camp 120 located in Annapolis, Maryland, along with forty-four others at the end of this week."
My heart sinks.
"Any questions?"
"Why so soon? Normally, you give at least two week's notice." I ask, trying not to cry.
"Circumstances in Maryland are not looking well. The enemy is entering the United States though the East Coast faster than anyone had predicted. Remember, soldier, this is the first war fought on our soil in over two hundred years, and every man, woman, and child over the age of eight is helping. There is a meeting directly after dinner with more information that all forty-five recruits will attend. Do you understand?"
"Yes, General."
"And?"
"Thank you for letting me participate as a soldier."
General nods and briskly walks away.
