Swimming Away
"Lana, what is it?" Nico asks as he reaches down to pick my phone up out of the sand. He dusts it off.
"Was it hot from the sun? I hate when that happens." Tonnie says.
I finally find my voice. "No. Look at the lock wallpaper."
Nico clicks the button while Tonnie and Travis look over his shoulders. Travis gasps.
"Yeah, that face would make me scream too." He says sarcastically.
How can he be joking about this? "This isn't funny Travis."
"Ouch. Sure it's not the best picture, but it's not that bad." Nico jokes. They all start laughing.
"How can you be laughing? Is this a prank?" I rip my phone out of Nico's hand. I can't believe that they are laughing at the picture I just saw. It makes me feel sick.
"I don't know what you're talking about?" Nico says. Travis and Tonnie agree.
"This." I click the button again since the screen has gone black.
I gasp. It's a picture of Nico and me. His dark hair is in his eyes and he has on the lime green beanie I got him for his birthday. "What happened to the other picture?"
"What other picture? That's all we saw." Nico looks worried. I'm not used to people giving me that look; I'm usually the one giving it. I am the rational, feet on the ground type.
"There was a picture of..." Do I tell them that I saw a picture of a woman dressed in a white, flowing dress with blood dripping from her neck that was sliced from ear to ear? Do I tell them that I also saw the toy from that stroller shoved in her mouth? I know it was the same one because they both were missing the left arm and the tail was bent at a weird angle.
What I need is to clear my head. I look out at the beautiful, blue ocean and know what will give me that. The beach is crowded as well as the ocean, but farther out there aren't many people. I can get some space, swim a little and start fresh.
"Never mind, I'm actually not hungry. I think I'll go for a swim." I shoot a text to my parents that we're at the beach. When I flip my finger across the screen to close the message I see the message icon light up.
They answered quickly. I click on it and my heart starts racing.
Unknown: That was for you only. Don't share my presents.
I look around to see which of my friends is messing with me but none of them have their phones out. It still is probably a prank. It makes sense. Who would randomly send me these things? What would be the reason besides messing with me? I know if I show it to my friends that they'll tell me the truth. As I turn to show Nico the message closes. I click on the icon again and it says that my inbox is empty. I click it again and there is a new message in all caps.
Unknown: I SAID DO NOT SHARE.
My heart is close to beating out of my chest at this point. Just as fast as the message appeared it is gone like the other one. I realize that my friends wouldn't go this far. I search the crowd around me to see who it could be. They have to be able to see me. The thought terrifies me. I see people all around me on their phones, but I have no way of knowing who it could be.
I turn my phone off, throw it in my bag and go to the water. I don't stop even when I hear Tonnie come up behind me. She grabs my arm to keep me from stepping into the water. No one gives us a second glance as I whip around to face her.
"Hey, stop. What's going on? You look seriously freaked out." She says.
"It's nothing. I'm fine. I just want to swim a couple of laps." I shake my arm from her grasp and walk into the refreshing water.
Once I'm to my thighs I plunge under the water and start my swim to the pier. Once I've surfaced I can hear someone swimming behind me. I glance back without stopping to make sure that it's Tonnie.
I don't stop until my hand is resting on the mussel covered wood. Tonnie makes it just after me. She is breathing hard. I have always been more of a swimmer while she's more of a sunbather.
"Now that we're over here you need to tell me what's going on." Tonnie gives me a serious look. "And don't you dare tell me that it's nothing. You are the calm one. I'm the one who screams and throws my phone; not you."
"It's nothing, really. I'm sure it was just a prank." I say and push off of the wood so that I'm treading water. If this is some creep then telling her could put her in danger.
"What was the prank?"
I decide to believe that it is a prank and tell her the truth. I'm just letting my imagination get away with me. It's much too unlikely that someone could be actually stalking me. I never give my number out. Yes, it's nothing. It has to be someone I know.
"Well there was a picture of a dead woman on my phone and then I got a message saying that I wasn't supposed to share it," I say.
"That's some sick prank. Who had access to your phone?"
"No one."
"You know what? I bet it was Parker. He was pretty pissed off when you beat him for the summer internship in the Medical Examiner's office." She says.
"He is good with computers and phones." I let my words trail off as I mull over the idea. That would make sense. Yes, my mind leaps at the prospect. I remember Nico mentioning that Parker was going to be here for his summer job.
