Phone Retrieval
Nico and Travis jump out as soon as the jeep is turned off. Nico comes back to open my door and Travis goes to the back to grab the cooler. On his way back he hits Tonnie's door so it slams shut before she can get out.
"Jerk!" She calls out after opening her door again. She walks out to him and kicks his shin.
I tune their bickering out like usual as I take Nico's hand. He is holding a big beach bag full of anything we could possibly need while Travis rolls the cooler behind him. The sun is bright and warm. I dig in my bag to get my phone out so I can text my parents to let them know we got here. I can't find it. I remember that I had it sitting in the pocket of the door while we were driving. I generally try to stay off it as much as possible when I'm with other people.
"Nico, can I get your keys? I forgot my phone in the jeep." I say as I reach my hand into his pocket.
"I can go with you." He stops walking.
"No, I'm fine. Really. You need to make sure those two don't kill each other." I point to the bickering couple in front of us.
"'Kay. Hurry." He squeezes my hand before letting it drop.
I jog back to the jeep. It's not far away. I'm glad that there aren't too many people right here. As I pass a young family I see the baby drop a toy from her stroller. It's a dinosaur that has seen better days. It must be well-loved. I bend down to pick it up, but before I can stand up someone bumps into me. My hands shoot out in front of me to catch myself.
I don't hit the ground though. Someone is holding my shoulders keeping me from toppling over. I turn around after catching my balance to apologize and thank the person. When I turn around my mouth goes dry. The man looks like he's just walked off of a movie set. He has caramel hair, tanned skin, and bright green eyes. His shirtless chest is rock hard.
"S-s-sorry." I stutter.
"Don't worry about it, babe." He says and winks.
"Thanks." I sound like an idiot.
"Careful. I might not be here next time to catch you." The man walks off in the opposite direction.
It strikes me as odd that he would go a different way, but I had just done the same thing so he probably has a good reason. I shake my head and run after the family that is now a couple of yards away.
"Sir, your baby dropped this." The man turns around to face me.
"Oh, Jenny baby were you throwing your toys again?" He takes the toy from me. "Thank you."
"Honey, that's not hers. Sorry, that's not ours." The woman looks disgusted and takes the figurine out of her husband's hand. She drops it in the trash can just next to them before walking away.
I could have sworn it dropped out of the girl's stroller, but I just shake my head and go back towards the jeep. Once there I open the door. He must have not locked it. Good thing I came back. I see my phone lying on the floor mat. The sun is shining off the blue case. I squint when it shines right into my eye and step back.
"Sorry." A woman says from behind me. When I stepped back I ended up right in front of her.
"Oh, sorry." I grab my phone, lock the door, and race back to my friends.
"Did you find it?" Nico asks once I've caught up with them.
"Yeah, I just bumped into a couple of people. Good thing I went back though because you left the jeep unlocked." I say.
"No, I didn't. I clicked the lock twice just in case."
"Yeah, I heard it." Travis joins in.
"Weird, I must have hit the unlock button on my way because it was unlocked when I got there," I say out loud but I know that I didn't. I pay attention closely and don't make mistakes often. Of course, I've already left my phone in the car, bumped into multiple people and gave a toy to the wrong person. Maybe I'm finally losing. It happens to a lot of people.
I shake the thoughts away and focus on what we're doing. We are now laying out our towels. Nico is putting up a big umbrella so that we'll have some relief from the sun which is necessary with my porcelain colored skin. Travis drops the cooler down in the shade.
"Yeah, you must have." Nico pulls off his shirt and I help him put some sunscreen on.
"So, who's ready for lunch?" Travis asks while rubbing his hands together and licking his lips.
"Music and food. Do you think of anything else?" Tonnie teases.
"I could go for a sandwich," Nico says.
I nod my head. "Me too."
While waiting for them to get the food out I click the button on the side of my phone so I can see my lock screen. I scream and my phone slips out of my grasp to drop into the sand.
