Chapter Five

"Ready yet?" Daya asked me as I added my finishing touches to the drawing.
"Almost, now quit asking," I told her.
"You've said that for the last five minutes! It looks fine, come on, let's go!"
"Fine," I said as I shaded the last part.
"Bye, Mrs. Mislan!" We both said as we left the room.
"Bye, girls!" she replied.
We headed out, Daya heading for band and me heading for Tech Ed.
When I went to Tech Ed, I was almost late (again).
"Welcome to Tech Ed, my name is Mr. Hudson. Today we will be making computer keychains. I  would you all to follow me to the computer labs."
It wasn't the most exciting class, but it was still fun.
"In the course of the next classes," Mr. Hudson started. "We will get into some more interesting stuff than we had today."
There was a bit of a cheer from the class, and the teacher smiled. "Just remember class, this is your favorite class and maybe then we can stay away from the homework for a while."
We all laughed, and walked out of the classroom. The bell rang and signaled the end of the day.
Wondering where Daya was, I started to look around the school. Then it hit me: I went over and asked a kid if there was Cross-Country today. He replied with a yes, and I took off running towards the front of the school.
I had just collapsed down a bench (I think I had a record running time) when Daya came over to me.
"Are you busy after practice today?" Daya asked me.
"No, why?" I asked, wondering why she would think I had plans.
"I was wondering if you want to go to my grandmothers house. We don't normally get visitors," she explained.
"Sounds great!" I said, and after I had said it I knew it sound so fake, so not me. "I'll meet you here when you're done."
She smiled and ran off to join the team because practice was about to start. I pulled out a book, put on my favorite grey Under Armour sweatshirt, and watched the rain while I read.
I've always like to sit out in the rain and just watch it. One time I read a quote that said, 'I used to think that Thunderstorms were scary as a child, but now I find them relaxing because it shows me that even the sky needs to scream sometimes' and I don't think anyone could relate to that any better than me.
Sometimes I wonder if I practiced if I could be a good runner. Especially today, because it almost seemed like I belonged. I wanted to just run everywhere, and sometimes I just want to run. I don't know if I want to compete doing it, I just want to run. I want the adrenaline rush.
The rain just makes me contemplate things, I guess. Like the running.
And Mia.
I don't think I will ever understand her, and what happened.
Suddenly, I heard the door open. Mia walked out, and as soon as she saw me she smiled, and then glanced away. She looked back and nervously asked, "Can... May... I sit... here?"
I was taken by surprise, but I still answered with a "yes" somehow.
"So..." she started. After a bit she just said, "It's been a while, hasn't it?"
"Yeah, it has," I answered. "It definitely has."
After a bit more of a pause, she asked, "So what's up with your life? Anything new?"
"I don't know. Not much, I guess. You?" I smirked as I added this last part: "Any new crushes?"
She laughed, and I think she could remember when she would have a new crush in a day. "Well, kind of..." she started.
"Do you still trust me enough to tell me?" I asked, even hearing the laughter in my own voice.
"Sure," she said, and it seemed as if all the ice was gone. "It's Evan," she whispered, and then laughed. I laughed too, and then she asked the question I was dreading: "Do you have a crush on anyone?" she asked.
"Well..."
"Come on, I told you mine!" she said, still laughing.
And in that second I realized two things. One: I think I may kind of like Evan. Two: I know why Mia's friend was glaring at me.
"Mine's... Evan too" I let out in one breath. We both just started laughing, and couldn't stop.
We both just said that no matter what, we aren't going to hate each other.
After a little bit, I said, " We should talk like this more often."
"Yeah," she agreed. "I miss talking like this. I think it was just when Jennifer got in the way, I kind of... drifted off. I miss the way we used to be."
"I do to," I said, and I thought that maybe she would. Maybe we could be friends again.
"Well, I have to go, but I'll talk to you soon, ok?" she said.
"Ok, bye!" I called off, and headed to the circle where Daya was. They looked like they had just finished.
"So, who do you like Carter?" I heard someone say. Seriously, I thought, didn't we settle this earlier?
"Eleniel," I heard him answer, and I turned around so fast that my hood fell off. I turned around in enough time to see him smirk, and his smile fade away when he saw me, and Daya get a look of pure sadness and run out.
I just realized that I am not meant to be here. This isn't the place for me.
I didn't know where Daya's house was, so I went up to Carter (once his friends left).
"What was that?" I asked, hitting him in the arm. He winced. "What about Daya?"
"Ow, that hurt. What about her?" he asked. "I never said she was the one I was in love with, I said the general thing, a person, not Daya. "
"Well, you implied it! And you know what? Daya never said your name either!"
There was a look of shock and realization on his face, and he just stood there.
"Now I want you to do two things, right now Carter: One, tell me the truth, do you or do you not like Daya. Two, where does she live?"
"I don't know, Eleniel. I just don't know. And I can take you to her house if you come with me, we live pretty close," he said, answering both questions.
"Ok," I mumbled, and we both grabbed our stuff and headed out.
