(Val is 16 turning 17 in this)

They lost...

They did.

John Constantine abanded the battle the moment he saw Zatanna all hunched over by those demons and fled right back to Earth for who knows where. The rest of the Justice League were either dead or had a worse fate. More than half of the titans died, old and new. Only four barely made it out alive.

The world was like a rose being set on fire. Once so prosperous and beautiful was burned to the ground-, a land of chaos. Parademons constantly looking for survivors, half of the population was killed and the remaining either went underground or hardly survived up above.

Val ...

rose above the rubble seeing Clairvoyant destroyed by the bomb the Clairvoyant put in just in case something bad ever happened. She saw all the operatives, killed, and ocean of dead bodies with drooling with bloof from their mouth, ribs, thighs. Everywhere. Ninety-nine per cent of the operatives died, the rest around the world. Val made her way through the rubble and piles of bodies and gazed out to see at the edge of the island where the headquarters stood.

The Clairvoyant island was shaped like a crescent moon, in the middle on a cliff that overlooked the island was where the base stood, now half of the island was destroyed. Val walked towards a small cliff where a helicopter stood.

The closest to the Mainland was England, a hundred and twenty-one miles. She could make it, it was her best chance at surviving. Val chucked herself into the black chopper and fired it up. Once she arrived she saw the complete devastation, tall buildings collapsed and became into rubble. The atmosphere around her was nothing but the lingering taste of blood. She made her way through the ghost town, silently dashing through the shadows. There weren't any parademons here, only the gentle win of bones.

As she passed by an ally she saw a thirteen-year-old girl with ash on her face crying looking through the garbage.

"hey, kid," Val said and the girl instantly jerked around looking at her. Val slowly went up to her crouching down.

"Hey, are you alright?" Val said comfortably like a sweet mother's voice. The girl sniffed, wiping away her tears. "Shh, sh, it's okay," she cradled her in her arms.

"What happened?"

"I-, I-, don't know what to do, my-, my-,family is gone and, and I- don't know what to do?" She said.

"How-, How long has it been? What happened?" Val said not knowing how long she was in a coma for.

"It's been almost two weeks, since the war,"

"What war?"

"The war, the justice league and the teen titans and stuff you know fought some guy from outer space. The invasion, they lost," the dirty blonde haired girl looked to Val's dark chocolate orbs.

"What's your name?"

"Vivian," she said

"I'm Val," she said and pulled out a small dagger from her belt that had the Valkyrie symbol inside a silver jewel. Vivian just gazed in amaze, she knew that symbol from the titans and looked at the female.

"You're, you're,"

"Yeah, I know. You think you can keep that a secret for me?" she said and Vivian nodded. Val got her up on her feet.

"Do you have anywhere else to go?" Val said

"No, I'm not sure the other survivors went. They went to some underground bunker," Vivian stated.

Val thought for a minute. "Let's see if we can find it," and Vivian seemed to smile.

"But you have to do as I say, there might parademons still," Val explained and she nodded.

Val looked around, analysing which was the safest way for her and the kid. She couldn't go by the roofs, the girl can't jump that far she thought. The only way was through the side of the streets, risky but it was their best shot. Val pulled Vivian to the side and peeped on the other side checking if it was clear. The two made their way downtown, moving through the buildings, in and out of the shadows. Val pressed a button on her cuffs for heat signatures for any signs of human activity. So far, none, but something in the distance had a weird heat signature. Val slowly made her way to the heat signature when the wall in front of her was punched by a parademon.

"RUN!" Val said instantly pulling Vivian by the wrist to the centre of the road where Vivian hid behind a box watching Val powering her cuffs up. She got out one of her v-a-rangs and threw it to the demon making it explode setting a smoke bomb. She ran to it kicking it and into an instant forward roll to dodge its claw-like hands that were sharp as knives. She got her stick and a holographic red sword and sliced its arm off making it groan in a high pitch scream. She instantly backs handspring backwards and gets into a fighting stance. The demon emerges from the smoke pissed with its eyes glowing like the flames of hell.

Suddenly she heard someone cast some spell and she knew that familiar brit accent anywhere.

Johnny.

She turned around to see him in his signature trench coat as the spell that has been cast gave the demon excruciating pain that made it screamed that could easily give a small children nightmares.

"Yeah, that's bloody right you bloody demon, aye'" he said.

Val took the chance to throw an explosive v-a-rang.

"Com' on then, best foot forward let's go, no dilly-dallying," John said. Val and Vivian followed him into one of his portals. John's portal transported them to one of the underground bunkers where Vivian joined them.

"Come on V," John said opening another portal and she followed him. The portal transported them to a pub.

Of course, it's a bloody pub Val thought.

"Hello," said a very low voice and Val got her sword and put it to the thing's neck.

"Take it easy now, alright. That's Etrigan, a friend of mine," John said featuring with his hands and Val put the blade down.

"Sorry," she said and the Etrigan only went back to his seat with a pile of drinks at his disposal. John went behind the counter and savaged through the various alcohols. Val sat on the counter, she knew all too well what John was going to do.

"John, drinking yourself to death isn't going to solve anything," Val said tilting her head.

"Ah, it doesn't bloody matter anymore ain't it? We Lost, and it's all soup's fault!" John said.

"What do you mean it's Superman's fault?" Val said.

"That man-, that man," he looked down tearing up.

"There was someone... wasn't there?" Val said sincerely.

John had many past relationships and hookups, but she knew that look all too well, the look the way she felt for Damian.

"Zee, Zatanna. She was... she was special," John said opening a whisky and drinking straight from it.

"So... what do you mean by superman? How is it his fault?" she looked up to the still sober man.

"We told him, we told him the rest of the world ain't bulletproof, But nooooo he 's like this isn't up for the discussion," he mocked superman.

"Now, more than half of the population is dead, including seventy-five per cent of superheroes,"

"What about... what about the titans?" she said.

John paused, hesitated in fact.

"They, from what I know more than half the team is dead. Or maybe all of them, I don't know anymore," he said.

Val's heart broke, she always imagined-, when she would escape that movie like a reunion. When she would stand there, perhaps in the rain, and smile at Damian and he would rush to her and swing her around all hold her in his arms and have a long lingering kiss.

But no

Her dreams were crushed. John looked at her, she was in the brink of tears, he scavaged through the shelves a picked a bottle of vodka and glass and put it in front of her.

Val just narrowed her eyes at John. "I'm not drinking,"

"What? This is England, you're allowed to drink at sixteen?" John Inquired.

Val sighed but then gasped as is she had just chocked on something she got out her seat and was on her knees.

"Ahhh!" she screamed with her hands on each side of her head.

She felt the power, the power surging inside her. It was like something was inside her, poking her, wanting to come out. She knew what it was, but didn't expect it to get this strong, she always kept it inside her, caged like a songbird in a golden cage. Her eyes went to the bright aqua teal colour.

"Shit, shit, shit, shit!" John ran to her and looked through the pockets of his trench coat. The dude was freaking out! He grabbed a golden bracelet with a white enchanted jewel in the centre and put it on her wrist. He incarnated a spell and Val fell into his arms weakly.

Slowly, slowly she opened her eyes.

"You ok kid?" he asked

"Yeah, thanks Johnny," she said.

"Anytime kiddo," he said and he helped her up.

"It's getting stronger John, what happens-, if, if I let it out?" she looked up

"The bracelet should hold it, but I need to cast it once every year or so," he said.

Val sat on the bench eyeing at the Vodka and looked to Etrigan. John grabbed his whiskey and put it in the air.

"To a year of bloody disappointments," he then drank and Etrigan did as well. Putting down his drink he poured the Vodka liquid to the small glass.

"Come one drink your sulk, aye'?" John said but Val just rolled her eyes and took the whole bottle and drank from the brim leaving John blinking in shock. For the girl who usually had such class and elegance just drank straight from the bottle.

But he shrugged because he thought: ah, screw it

"Cheers," Val said putting down the glass.

"To a shitty year,"
