"𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐡, 𝐘/𝐍"
— I'm [Y/N]. [Y/N] [Y/L/N].
Five nodded. He switched his attention entirely to his notebook as if he was deliberately avoiding her sight. — What is your power?
— Why should I tell you? You're basically my enemy now.
— I'm not. - he replied, plainly enraged. — If I were truly your enemy, I would have you lying on the ground by now.
— I don't think so, but I appreciate your confidence. - [Y/N] answered with a smile.
— You said you would!
— I know, I know... I was only kidding.
— Stop behaving like a moron. I expected someone as... dangerous as you to be more...
— Boring? Did you mean boring? You also seem to be pretty dangerous. Does this imply that you're also boring?
— I would love to disagree, but I'm afraid my siblings won't allow me. - Five stated nearly whispering.
His remarks made her laugh. — Umbrakinesis.
— What? What's that? - he asked confused.
— Umbrakinesis is the ability to create and manipulate darkness, often known as the absence of light. I can also travel through shadow.
— Can you shadow travel to other dimensions?
— Other dimensions? No.
— I assumed you could enter the underworld or something like that..
— I'm afraid I can't, but I can see in the dark.
Five took careful notes on everything she said, summarising her talents as best he could. He glanced at her quietly as he came to a halt. He seemed depressed or anxious.
[Y/N] looked at him with questioning look on her face.
— Are you alright? she inquired, analyzing every aspect of his face.
— Yeah just.. - he looked down at his notebook before returning his eyes to her. — What is your history?
— My history?
— Yes. What country are you from? What exactly are you doing here? Where are your parents?
— They're no longer alive. I'm from a small village [Village/Name], - she replied, appearing as if she was going to murder Five, before continuing with a warm smile on her face. — And I'm here to rest! When compared to my previous village, being in such a big city is exciting.
— Where do you live if you're here by yourself?
— I don't really have a permanent address. I normally stay in abandoned houses, but I switch locations every few days so the cops don't find me. Is that it?
— Yeah, yes I guess..
— Okay! It was a pleasure to meet you...
— Five.
— Just Five? You don't have a name like everyone else?
— No, it's just Five.
— Well, see you later, Five. - she said as she began to exit his room through the open window.
— Wait! - he grabbed her wrist, preventing her from walking away. — It's past midnight... and you're still bleeding. Don't you want to spend the night here?
— I don't want to ask too much of you. You have already been of great assistance to me.
— I'm pretty sure you'll feel better after sleeping in a comfortable, warm bed instead of an abandoned cold house.
— You're right, but I..
— Come on [Y/N]. Sit down, make yourself at home and I will make you something to eat, okay?
— If it's not a problem for you then.. okay.
Five gave her a smile and blinked to the kitchen. He went through all of the cabinets looking for coffee.
— Five? You're still awake at this hour?
At fright, the Boy whirled around to find his mother standing in the doorway. She gave him a questioning look while maintaining a friendly grin.
— I'm sorry mum, I was just hungry and decided to eat something.
— It's okay dear. Do you want me to prepare some eggs and bacon for you?
— No thanks, I'm alright! he said, showing Grace a cup of steaming coffee and a plate with a freshly prepared sandwich.
— Good night then, Five.
— Night mom!
— You're so sweet when you're talking to your mother. - [Y/N] stated with a smile to Five.
Five gave her a quick glance. [Y/N] was now sitting on the floor next to a bookshelf, reading some of the books in Five's room. Unfortunately, all of them were about either math or physics.
— If you want, you can take one of them. - he shut the door, moved closer to her and sat down.
— Thank you, but no. I'm not really keen on math.
Five nodded. He couldn't help but feel embarrassed. He didn't know why, but he had been trying to impress her from the first time he saw her, but he didn't know what to do because she didn't like math. How could he gain her attention and admiration?
— So, what is your favourite subject then?
— I like civics and English, and I used to enjoy our law and psychology after-school activities while I was in school.
— I see.. Can I ask you one more thing?
— Sure! Anything you want!
— Why are you doing this? - he asked as he handed her a peanut butter and marshmallow sandwich.
— Doing what?
— Killing those innocent people?
— "Innocent"?! - his remarks made her laugh. He appeared unfazed, but on the inside, he was a complete wreck. He had no idea how to act in her presence.
— They are far from innocent. - she took a little bite of the sandwich — They're criminals, and I'm their punishment.
— What do you mean?
— I found child porn on the other guy's PC. He didn't even have a password. Just 123456. That elderly couple from the newspaper has a lengthy history of human trafficking. They collaborated with certain European "Mafiosi." He kidnapped white newborns from Central and Eastern Europe and was transferring them to the United States. Those motherfuckers prepared those newborns to be sold to wealthy couples who couldn't have their own children due to infertility or other problems.
Five fell quiet. She was repeating all of this with a little tone of irritation in her voice, but she sounded as if nothing had happened. As if all of the crimes she detailed were not new to her, as if she had been dealing with them her entire life.
— I'm sorry.. I didn't know.. - he whispered.
— No, it's not a problem. At least, they won't harm anyone anymore, she responded, smiling.
Five nodded. He made [Y/N] tell him all the horrible things she had to cope with, which was embarrassing.
— By the way, I am grateful for your help. Not everyone would help a criminal.
— It's really not an issue for me. - Five stood up. — I'll prepare the bed for you. You are also free to borrow my pyjamas. It's in the closet.
He quickly looked aside from [Y/N], but he could sense her anxiety. She was about to deny his offer, but the prospect of sleeping in a comfortable, warm bed for the first time in a long time compelled her to accept it.
Five grinned. He wanted to act calm and confident, but the prospect of having someone to talk to, someone who might be a good friend, made him feel stressed. And [Y/N] wasn't just any ordinary girl; she wasn't one of his fan girls who only wanted his autograph. She appeared to be nice. He was well aware that she need his help. Despite the fact that they had just recently met, Five made a promise to himself to help her.
Meanwhile, [Y/N] had changed into the pyjamas that Five had lent her. It was just a plain baby blue shirt and trousers but it felt so comfortable she almost fell asleep.
— Are you done changing? - Five asked.
— Yes. - [Y/N] answered, still being too embarrassed to look up.
— Aright. Good night then. - he smiled, took a blanket from his wardrobe for himself and lied down on a matres he prepared for himself.
— Good night. - [Y/N] muttered. She fell asleep right away, exhausted after a long day.
—(••÷ ~☂️~ ÷••)—
Five woke up with his eyes still closed. He sat up on his mattress, his eyes adjusting to the harsh sunshine.
— Wait. Sunlight??
He stood up and looked around his room.
— She's already gone, - Five murmured. He felt betrayed, or perhaps simply upset or furious with himself for letting her leave, and maybe a little bit at [Y/N] for leaving without saying anything.
He didn't want to acknowledge it, but he secretly wished she would remain. Only for today. At least for today
He put his mattress away and changed his clothing in silence. Then he noticed the pyjamas he had lent her the day before. [Y/N]'s bloodied clothing had vanished.
He shrugged it off and dashed downstairs for breakfast.
— Five.
When the boy looked back, he saw his mother standing close next to him. She appeared worried. Grace placed her hand on Five's shoulder and smiled warmly at him.
— Good morning... - he said.
— You know you can always tell me if something happened and I'll help you, right?
— I know, Mom. Nothing really happened.
Grace smiled at him once more before walking away.
— What was she talking about? - Five thought as he made his way to the dining room. — Could it be the first aid kit I took from the restroom yesterday? I completely forgot to return it.
– Number Five! You're late!- shouted Reginald as Five walked in.
Everyone's gaze was now focused on him. Great..
— What is your explanation? I'm listening Number Five.
Five claimed to have felt his siblings' eyes staring at him.
— I fainted. - he said hastily. He despised the constant pressure his father put on him and his siblings.
— Why?
— God. Why can't you simply stop talking, old man?
— I tried to time travel.
— Despite my prohibition?
Five nodded.
— Sit. - the old man ordered.
Five did as he said. Everyone's attention was still focused on him. The only thought that accompanied him during breakfast was what punishment his father would give him for his insubordination.
Reginald dismissed the children when everyone had finished their meal.
— Five, are you coming for training? — Vanya said as he entered his room slowly.
Shit. He forgot to lock the door once again.
— Yes, I'll be there in a minute, he said, without looking at her. He merely continued updating his notes on [Y/N]'s case.
— What's with this mess? - Vanya looked around Five's room.
— Not your concern. - he responded, visibly annoyed. He understood what he had said after a few seconds and, panicked, he began to talk.— I'm sorry Vanya, I didn't meant to..
— Don't worry, everything is fine. I see you're in a bad mood. Dad said you don't have to participate in training today, but he'll assign you a task or something similar later once you're feeling better. — Vanya interrupted him, still smiling. He was astonished by her ability to always smile, even while she was being yelled at.
— No, I'm coming. Just give me a second. - He reciprocated Vanya's smile, which made her feel a little better.
— Okay, I'll inform Dad!
—(••÷ ~☂️~ ÷••)—
— Today you will practise your combat abilities without your powers. Following a warm-up, you will train in pairs. Number One with Number Three, Number Six with Number Two and Number Five with Number Seven. Number Four is coming with me. Begin! - Reginald followed Klaus outdoors, who was as happy as always.
— What the... - said Diego, but he stopped talking when he noticed Pogo was still in the training room.
— Is he receiving special treatment or something? - inquired Allison, looking envious.
— I can't believe Dad is playing favourites. - Luther stated.
— He is the type to not only play favourites but also to torment his children with all-day training - Diego sneered.
— Ben. - Vanya said. The rest of the siblings turned to look at the mentioned boy. — You said you'd ask Klaus what was going on yesterday.
— So? - Ben shifted his gaze away from his siblings.
— So, what do you know about it all?– Not a lot. Klaus claimed that they are only testing his new power, although he has no idea what it is.
— So he has a new power, but he has no idea what it is? - Allison inquired.
— Perhaps it's something like prophetic dreams. This new skill seems to complement his capacity to communicate with the dead. - Five pointed out.
Everyone nodded and began the training without much thinking. Except for one person.
— Ben! I'm sorry! - Diego knelt on the floor next to Ben, who was bleeding from his mouth and nose.
— Move, children, move. - murmured Pogo as he helped Ben to stand. — Luther, help me and take him to the infirmary.
Luther immediately grabbed his brother's arm and made his way to the exit.
— What actually happened, Diego? - Five inquired, looking at Diego with curiosity.
— I'm not sure... - he said. His voice was trembling. He was clearly nervous. — I didn't intend to punch him that hard. I expected him to block my attack, but instead, he seemed to become distracted or he simply froze in place. I didn't want to hurt him at all.
— Don't worry, Diego. I'm sure he won't be mad for too long. - Vanya tried to soothe him.
—(••÷ ~☂️~ ÷••)—
— Fuck, my stomach... - muttered Five. Today's workout was quite torturous. Allison dodged Luther's attack just before the finish, so instead of hitting her, he hit Five straight in the stomach.
Five kept his cool, but as his siblings left the room, he collapsed to the ground on his back. His eyesight began to blur.
He noticed that the room he was in was becoming darker. Because of the agony and disorientation, he was experiencing, he expected to fall asleep here.
— Hargreeves.. Hargreeves! - he heard from behind him.
— [Y/N]?! - he said as he tried to sit up, but was cut short by her. — Lay down dumbass. Don't even try to stand up or you're going to loose balance and fall again.
— I'm Alright, I don't need your help.
Five rose up and attempted to spatial-jump himself to his room, only to wind up spatial-jumping into a wall.
[Y/N] chuckled, she couldn't keep silent after that.
— My head! Shit!
— Stop acting, Hargreeves, and let me take you to your bedroom.
— And how do you plan to do this? — Five said, raising an eyebrow.
[Y/N] gave him a sly grin.
— Oh, I hate that smile. - Five pointed out.
[Y/N] grabbed his wrist and dragged him into the strangely dark shadow. When he opened his eyes, he and [Y/N] were in an infinitely big, white room. On the ground, he noticed furniture shadows and his siblings' shadows moving in the kitchen. Or something that appeared to be their kitchen but was actually just like a drawing on paper.
Unfortunately, he didn't see much more since his brain couldn't handle the pressure this dimension imposed on him and fainted shortly after entering it.
— Wake up Hargreeves, we're here! - [Y/N] shouted as she helped Five to sit on his bed. — Your spatial-jumping has no effect on you, but you can't handle quick shadow travel. And you think you're dangerous? -she scoffed.
— Are we in my room? - asked Five, half asleep.
— No, it's Griddy's Doughnuts. Can I get you something, sir?
Five grinned in reaction to her response. He turned to face her.
— You're still dressed in your old clothes. - he observed. His expression became more serious.
— I like them. They're comfortable and it's easy to neutralize criminals in them.
— If you insist.
— By the way, sorry for leaving without saying anything. I just didn't want to wake you up.
— It's not really a problem. I didn't even notice.
— I could have sworn I heard you talking..
—Five! Five! - [Y/N] was cut off by a random voice from behind the door.
— Quick! Hide! - he said as he walked over to the door. — Yes? Allison?
— First and foremost, Dad agreed, and we can go to Griddy's Doughnuts; second, who is that girl you were just talking with?
Five remained silent, unsure what to say. Was Allison eavesdropping in on them? What did she know?
— Girl? Why would there be a girl in my room?
— I just thought I heard someone with you.
— Then you were mistaken. - he raised his voice in frustration — I was only watching TV.
— Okay, okay! Sorry! I just don't want to have a perverted brother.
— Why do you care so much? We already have Klaus.
— So, are you coming or not?
— Sure, I'll be there in a minute. You can leave without me.
— God, I'm jealous of your teleportation. - murmured Allison as she left.
— If I were you, I'd be envious, too. - he yelled as he shut the door.
[Y/N] emerged from a shadow casted by TV in Five's room.
— Was it your sister?
— Yeah, it was Allison. Do you want to come along with us?
— To Griddy's Doughnuts? With you? Obviously not. My pictures are all over the town right now, they'll recognize me and call the cops on me! Not to mention the damage to your and your father's reputation.
— I didn't consider it. If you want, I can just go grab you something. Which flavour is your favourite?
— Thank you, but I have to go. I killed who needed to be killed, and now I have to move to Norway. My next stop will be in Oslo, and then... I'm not sure... maybe Croatia? - [Y/N] remarked as she reached the open window.
— Why are you leaving so early?
— I'm out of targets here. - she climbed out the window. She was now standing on the balcony, facing Five, who was in his room next to her.
— But don't you want to stay and maybe unwind a little? All of the killing you mentioned before must have been exhausting.
[Y/N] sighed, trying not to roll her eyes in front of him. She wanted to appear friendly. He did, after all, help her.
— You're right, but if I won't do this, all of them will take their sins to their graves.
Five nodded. He and [Y/N] both fell silent. Only now did Five notice a little difference in [Y/N]'s appearance. Her weary eyes had dark shadows under them. Her tattered clothes only emphasized the fatigue she felt.
— What? - [Y/N] asked, making Five snap out of his thoughts. — Is there anything on my face?
Five smirked looking up at her. She gave him only a confused look.
— You look like death, [Y/N].*
[Y/N] questioned him, seeking an apology for the insult.
— Okay, you're free to go. I guess I'll have to see all of the new horror films by myself.
— Are you attempting to bribe me right now, Hargreeves? - she was surprised, annoyed, and irritated with him. But she had to confess that she felt... kind of special? Perhaps it was too soon to call it "feeling special," but she certainly felt good as she saw Five try to stop her from leaving.
— No, of course not. I'm only saying that without you, my plans for tonight will be wrecked.
— You've got plans for tonight? Like.. for us? What sort of plans to be exact?
— The type of plans that won't work out if you leave.
For a little while, [Y/N] fell silent once more. Five knew she was only giving him time to come up with another convincing argument.
After a few seconds of silence, he remarked. — I've got popcorn. Caramel popcorn.
— Caramel popcorn and hot chocolate and I'm in!
Five grinned at her. He extended his hand to [Y/N] to help her in entering the room, which she gratefully accepted.
— Number Five! - A knock on the door and Reginald's voice spoiled the moment for them.
As Five opened the door, [Y/N] dashed behind the wardrobe.
— Number Five, I have an assignment for you. Take this. - Reginald handed the boy some paper and a large metal key.
— What should I do with this?
— Go to the address I wrote on the piece of paper. - the old man added as he turned away and exited Five's room. — You'll know what to do.
— What is it? — [Y/N] inquired as she emerged out of nowhere behind Number Five.
— I'm not certain.
— Oh, I know where it is! - she said as she examined the paper Reginald had given them. — It's a cemetery near the woods.
— I'm not even going to question why you know where the nearest graveyard is. I'm not sure I want to know that. Please wait for me, I'll be right back. - Five, using his abilities, spatial-jumped exactly near the public cemetery's main gate.
He looked around, but he didn't saw anything suspicious about this place. It was simply a typical cemetery with no people because it was becoming dark outside. He walked carefully into the cemetery, still taking in his surroundings. This location appeared to be deserted.
— Perhaps that's why [Y/N] knows this place so well.. - he joked as he approached a random grave he'd noticed earlier.
It was nearly entirely demolished. The graffiti on it indicated that this was a common hangout for some pathetic kids' gang or something.
— BOO!
Five had fallen on the grave he was just staring at.
— What the hell is.. [Y/N]?! Why would you do such a thing?! I told you to wait in my room!
— I'm sorry, I was just bored and I enjoy creepy adventures, so I thought I'd join you. - she helped him in getting up. Five rolled his eyes but said nothing about her needing to return.
— Do you have any clue why he handed me the key? - Five looked at [Y/N] as they began wandering around the area.
— I'm not sure, but it has the same vibe as that mausoleum over there. - she said, pointing to the aforementioned tomb, which was hidden where the forest began to grow.
— This is getting more interesting.
They both dashed to the old structure. Five unlocked the large wooden door and opened it with the help of [Y/N].
— Holy crap, that was heavy. - [Y/N] concluded.
As the light form outside found it's way to the inside of the mausoleum, both teenagers started to look around. It didn't take them too long to spot the thing Five's father was talking about.
— Klaus! - Five shouted as he and [Y/N] began running towards him. — He isn't moving!
[Y/N] immediately checked his pulse and glanced at Five with a puzzled expression.
— I'm sorry, Five, but he's not breathing. — she mumbled, hiding her hands in her shorts pockets. She instantly felt guilty. She knew it wasn't her fault that his brother died, but she felt unwelcome. She just wanted to do, what she always did when she was overwhelmed, hide. [Y/N] tried not to move, but something compelled her to look at Five.
God, she regretted this decision. She never expected someone as haughty and serious as Five to be able to cry so fiercely. She knew they were family, but after two days of observing Five and his siblings, she had no idea he was so connected to his family.
Five's eyes turned red from crying. His breathing got faster as he gripped his brother's body. A shaky hand combed over Klaus' hair, apologising for being such a bad brother to him.
[Y/N] could only look in horror at Five and his brother. She placed her hand gently on his shoulder.
— We should take him back home, Five.
