"𝐀𝐬 𝐟𝐚𝐫 𝐚𝐬 𝐈'𝐦 𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞..."
Grace's footsteps could be heard throughout the entire building. The Umbrella Academy has never been so silent. Today's training seemed suspiciously short, but no one complained, especially Five and Ben.
Everyone knew what had happened to Klaus and how their father had treated him. They were all disgusted by his behaviour and, for the first time in their lives, refused to fight each other.
Five spotted Klaus three days earlier, and although Number Four had woken from what everyone might term the fact that Number Four had woken from what everyone might term as a coma, Five said nothing to him. It's not that he despised his brother or was too cowardly to face him. After learning about all of this, Five was terrified to go anywhere near Klaus. When Five saw Klaus, all he could think of was how his father was a heartless monster.
Number Five was afraid he wouldn't be able to stand his anger and he would take it out on Klaus. That's why he did his hardest to ignore him and his siblings.
— Three days have passed. - Five muttered, sitting on his bed and gazing out the window. — Where are you?
-(••÷ ~☂️~ ÷••)-
[Y/N] groaned, attempting to block out the noise coming from the broken window. She put her hands over her ears.
She had been resting on her back on a cold concrete floor since this morning, peering into the ruins of the ceiling above her.
[Y/N] closed her eyes, attempting to sleep after a night of reading old literature. She took a deep breath. Her throat was pricked by the frigid air, prompting her to curl up in pain.
She resumed her unhealthy habit of living in dilapidated buildings. Three days earlier, she and Number Five found Klaus unconscious on the floor of the old mausoleum.
— I feel so pathetic..
-(••÷ ~☂️~ ÷••)-
Klaus's garments were tightly clasped in his quivering hands. His breath began to shake as he attempted to spatial-jump with his sibling back home.
— Let me help.. - [Y/N] put a hand on his shoulder to calm him down.
— [Y/N].. - Five said, wiping his tears away with his jacket sleeve.
With one hand, she grabbed Five, who was holding his brother in his arms, and placed the other on the wall, allowing him to shadow travel with her.
They both fell out the shadow in the main hall. [Y/N] collapsed to the ground, while Five remained upright.
— [Y/N]! - he shouted when he spotted her laying on the floor.
— I'll be alright, you go with him to your mother. - she assured him as she struggled to her feet. Emotions grabbed possession of her, making shadow travel more perilous and unpredictable.
Five nodded and dashed into the kitchen, where he heard his mother's voice.
— Mother! Mom! - he cried, drawing the attention of his mother and siblings.
— Yes Number F-
— He isn't breathing! I found him in the mausoleum. You have to help him!
Reginald and Grace rushed Klaus to the hospital, leaving the children and slamming the massive wooden door in front of Number Five's face.
From behind one of the pillars, [Y/N] witnessed everything. She stood in a shadow that was undetectable to the naked eye. It was one moment that decided about everything. Five turned around, his eyes red with tears, anxiously looking for [Y/N]. Apart from his worried siblings, he saw no one else. She had already disappeared.
-(••÷ ~☂️~ ÷••)-
— Number Five? How do you feel today? - Grace murmured as she came into Number Five's room, who stared at her immediately.
He didn't respond, simply nodded with a faint grin and looked away.
— I made you some mint tea. It will help you relax. - She placed the mug of tea and biscuits on the nightstand and sat on the bed next to Five. She took his hand in hers and smiled at him. — Your brother is doing lot better at the moment. You don't have to worry. Would you want to accompany your siblings on their walk? They wanted me to ask you about it.
— I don't think that's a good idea, Mom. I'd prefer to stay at home.
— Okay, I'll inform them that you will not be going. - the woman grinned as she exited the room, closing the door behind her.
Before lying down on the bed, Five nodded. He sighed, unsure of whether or not what he had done was right. To be honest, he wanted to go out with them, perhaps to the movies. He regretted not being able to see his siblings more often. He remembered the nights when they would laugh until dawn over ridiculous jokes.
What about [Y/N]?
— She left me and she is not returning.
Five sprang out of bed and left the room, heading towards the ground floor. There was, however, no one else in the home. He spatial-jumped outdoors and started looking around.
— Five! - exclaimed Diego. Five quickly turned to face him. — So you are coming?
— Yeah, I thought I could use a little walk. Griddy's Doughnuts, perhaps?
— Yeah, but we don't have any money. - Allison muttered.
— But, I do. - Five grinned. He took a few bucks from his pocket, which he had stolen from his father's desk a few nights before. — It's all on me.
Throughout the meeting, Five could swear he felt an odd emptiness within that hanging out with his siblings couldn't fulfil.
— You're not going to buy anything? - Luther inquired.
— I don't feel like eating anything. - Five said. He was lying. He didn't have much money, but he felt compelled to make up for how he treated his siblings.
— By the way, since Klaus is still unable to leave the Academy, I think we should take some donuts for him. - suggested Ben.
— You're right. I'm full so I can volunteer. - said Allison.
— Me too. - Diego added. — I'm sure he's starving after all of this... I'm hoping he'll appreciate it.
— Five, could you please give this to him? - Allison inquired, handing the boy a paper bag of doughnuts.
Five was tempted to reject, but he was convinced by his siblings. He'd have to confront Klaus sooner or later anyway.
He took the bag and left the building, heading home. After h e arrived and knocked on Klaus's door, waiting for a quiet "come in."
— Hey. - Five said hurriedly, opening the door to the room slightly and stepping inside.
— Hi - he replied cheerfully, smiling at Five.
— How do you always stay so happy? You can't get out of bed.
— Who says I can't?
— Yesterday, the doctor stated-
Five was cut off by Klaus jumping out of his bed and hugging him.
— I'm glad to see you in such good shape. - Five patted him on the back and handed him a bag of donuts.
— What's this?
— Donuts for you. We dropped by Griddy's Doughnuts and thought you'd enjoy some as well.
— Thank you; you were right. I'm going to die of hunger. Also, why have you been avoiding me lately?
— I just felt physically ill. I'll be in my room; let me know if you require anything.
— Thanks, I will!
Five shut the door behind him and went inside his bed. He took a peek around the room. It was comfortable here. The sun had already begun to set, but the light from the city was still flooding the room. Number Five sighed and rolled onto his back. He was so sick of it all. Of what their father was doing and how he was always left alone.
He took one of the two pillows and snuggled against it. He listened to the noises flowing from the city into his bedroom for a little period. He took a look at the cork board he'd set up for [Y/N]'s case.
— She's not coming back.. she's not coming back.. - he repeated slowly, closing his eyes lightly from tiredness.
— I suppose she didn't want to stay here. She only agreed to stay out of respect. - he muttered as he buried his face in the pillow. He then chuckled and raised his gaze to the ceiling.
— I was hoping to make a friend. I suppose I might have predicted it.
Five rubbed his eyes and stared out the window again during the brief stillness. His expression softened, and a single tear fell from his eye, which was followed by a small grin.
— I'm going to miss her [Hair/Colour] [Hair/Length] hair, as well as the hesitant smile she had when I let her stay. She's a murderer, yet when I suggest help, she blushes.
He grinned to himself as he recalled their first meeting.
— What. The. Hell.
He spun around as soon as he heard a voice behind him.
— [Y/N]?! - he screamed as he saw the girl standing behind, staring at him in bewilderment. He hooked his foot on the blanket and fell face down on the floor, unable to get up. — What are you doing here?!
— I could ask you the same!
— Why are you in my room?!
— Because my powers allow me to? Idiot..
— This does not mean that you can just waltz into my room! What are you doing here, and why were you eavesdropping on me?
— I wasn't eavesdropping! It's not my fault you didn't notice me coming in here, lover boy.
— Get out! Don't even call me that! You could at least pretend you didn't hear anything. - Five got to his feet and straightened his outfit.
— Okay, I can leave, but you'll miss me much more if I leave. - she responded with a vindictive smile, then exhibited the bag she was carrying. — Oh, and I brought food.
— How much did you hear? - he inquired. He looked at her, visibly uncomfortable.
— Hear what? Hargreeves, what are you on about? - [Y/N] remarked, thinking Five would eventually forget and forgive her.
Number Five sighed and motioned for her to emerge from the shadows.
— Fine.. - he cleared his throat. — ..you can stay.
[Y/N] sat at the far end of the bed, an anxious smile on her face, studying Fives' facial expressions and body language. Unfortunately, she wasn't able to deduce any valuable information about his emotions from his behaviour. That son of a bitch was great at hiding them.
— Would you mind explaining why you disappeared for three days? - he inquired, his gaze fixed on her.
[Y/N] turned away from him, looking at the floor, thinking of a good excuse. She knew that a simple apology and explanation for her disappearance would not be enough to convince Five.
— So? - he urged the girl.
— You know.. I've never had to deal with the death of someone I love, mostly because such a person doesn't exist, and I highly doubt I'd ever care more about someone than I do about... er... That's a horrible example because I don't care about anyone... What I'm trying to say is that just seeing you worried about your brother's possible death has perplexed me. I've never seen something like this before. Maybe it's because I don't often feel sorry for anybody, much alone my victims. - she briefly grinned before going back to being serious. — To sum up, I felt awful about being a mass killer in a situation where my "friend" was grieving the death of his sibling.
— Klaus is alive. He woke up yesterday.
— Congrats! Did I already mention the fact that I brought food? - she hastily responded, hoping to divert the subject.
— If you felt so bad about it, why did you come back?
— Because I also felt bad about leaving you on ice right after you helped me.
Five looked at her, then at the ground. The two teenagers were deafeningly silent.
— How is your wound healing? - he inquired after a few seconds of stillness.
— I'm not sure. I haven't checked since yesterday.
— Did you change the bandage?
— No. Is it a requirement of your forgiveness that you interrogate me?
— Maybe. Do you still plan to go to Oslo?
— I'm not sure yet. Why do you care?
— Have you stolen this food? - Five inquired, pointing to the paper bag mentioned earlier by [Y/N].
— No, I hired a homeless man to get me this. I didn't want anyone to recognise me, and this man needed the money, so we struck a bargain. In conclusion, I did not steal the food... Just the cash.
Five snorted and returned his gaze to [Y/N].
— Alright, I'm not going to chase you out of here, but you must allow me to change your bandage.
— I won't complain because you're basically doing me a favour. - she answered, pleased.
-(••÷ ~☂️~ ÷••)-
— Did anyone teach you basic wound and cut care? - he inquired, rinsing her wound with hydrogen peroxide.
— No, I figured it out on my own, but I simply didn't have the time to deal with it. I was preoccupied.
— What were you doing? Haunting poor people in cemeteries? - he laughed but became serious as he glanced up and met [Y/N's] annoyed eyes.
— I'm not sure where you've been these three days, but it appears that an infection has set in. Fortunately, nothing serious has happened. Take it. - He gave antibiotics and a glass of water to her.
— Thanks mom. - she laughed and swallowed the pill.
Five stared at her and grinned reflexively. Not hard, but up close you could see a slight smile on his face. [Y/N] noticed this and pulled away from him.
— What are you looking at, pervert?
— It's hard for me to say these words, but at times you remind me a lot of Klaus with your behaviour.
— Okay, but your expression and what you just said makes me worried about your brother. - she joked, causing Five to chuckle.
— Do you want to see those horrors? - Five asked. He approached the television and rummaged through his CD collection, picking solely horror movies..
— That's what I came here for.
— I see you don't lack humour today.
Then [Y/N]s' sense of humour kicked in.
— I know.. I know.. I was relieved by the thought that you might forgive me, and it's probably partly because I'd met such a handsome guy in the city previously.
Five stopped looking at the CDs. He stood perfectly still, without moving one inch.
— He's undoubtedly an idiot and also too confident, yet he looks really good. It's just a shame that some chick follows him around all the time.
— Really? - he questioned. His back still turned to [Y/N]. He had no idea why his voice began trembling.
— Yeah... - she answered, seeming to be bored before resuming her conversation with a grin. — And he was wearing a uniform similar to yours. Is that your brother? He had blond hair. Will you introduce me to him?
That was it. Five choked on his coffee, forcing him to spew it all out over himself.
— Luther! Really?! - he exclaimed, staring at her in disbelief, but soon dropped his voice, remembering that Klaus was still in his room not far away.
His heart rate rose, which made him stutter more anxiously.
[Y/N] just started laughing at his expression, too bad she didn't notice that Five didn't get her joke.
— You-You choose him out of everyone?! - Five was now panting. - I mean.. If you're really seeking for a boyfriend, perhaps..
— Chill, Five, I want to watch those movies today. - She rushed the boy while still chuckling at his reaction.
The boy just nodded, put the cassette into the player and sat next to her on the bed. He felt like a stranger in his own room while [Y/N] busied herself unpacking snacks and drinks.
Five couldn't focus on the movie, on any movie. Because they'd already seen three of them and he was still sitting in the same spot, dispassionately watching the characters on TV.
— Ben. - he said suddenly, drawing the attention of the girl who looked at him as if he was crazy.
— What? What are you talking about Hargreeves?
— If you're serious about finding a boyfriend, I genuinely think my brother Ben is your best bet. He's number six if you didn't know his name before. For all I know, he likes you and wants you to join the Academy. He is nice and always eager to help others. He is also serene and would not harm a fly.. if he did not have to obey our father's demands. You'd be a good match.
— Okay?.. - she said quietly and returned to watching the movie, but, like her companion, she couldn't concentrate on it anymore. Did he actually believe what she said? He should have picked up on the signals that she was chuckling throughout that talk. Should she tell him it was all a prank now? No, it's best if she does it later or tomorrow.
— Coming back to my previous question.. are you going to Oslo, or are you still not sure?
— I think I'll stay for a few more days, you know? I wanted to enjoy my time in this city.
— You've probably seen more than a dozen cities like this, haven't you? - he said, looking at her for the first time in hours.
— Yeah.. I mean no.. I mean, I've seen a lot of cities, but I've never stayed in any of them as long as here. - she replied with a slight laugh, but the serious and also curious expression on Number Five's face and the eye contact they made, made her want to stop time and just run away as she always did.
— Do you consider staying here longer?
— It depends on whether I have a place to stay. - [Y/N] grinned. She attempted to calm her racing heart as she watched his stoic expression of calmness.
Five remained calm on the surface, but on the inside, he was more anxious than [Y/N]. Was she flirting with him right now or was she simply trying to be nice? His thoughts were going as fast as light. She first drew nearer to him before flashing him that smile, the exact reverse of what she had done when they first met. A moment more and he'll die on the spot.
Quick! What to do? How ought he to respond?
— You know.. As far as I'm aware my bed isn't going anywhere.
Y/N's "humour" <<<<<<<< but also Y/N's "humour" >>>>>>>>
But let's not judge her, she don't have any friends so she don't know how she should act around people her age.
