June woke up the next morning, an intense pain instantly shooting through her arm as she reached over to feel her bandage. Thanks to some rubbing alcohol and a bandage to avoid having to go to the hospital June had been fixed up by Sarah. She groaned, sitting up in the bed she was in, looking over at the figure laying beside her. She admired JJ for a second, liking how adorable he looked in his sleep. She was just so shocked at how they had ended up like this, it was unpredictable. He was unpredictable. She shook JJ, waking him up as she stepped out of bed, pulling a change of clothes out of her closet. They had rode back to June's house last night after everyone had went their separate ways. JJ didn't want to ruin his excitement by going home. They had talked for hours about the gold and how crazy it was that they had actually found it before eventually just sitting in silence and enjoying each other's company. They fell asleep in each other's arms, and June didn't want it any other way.
"Good morning." June said, biting her lip as she looked over at JJ. He groaned as he turned over, putting his head into the pillow and trying to savor his sleep. June rolled her eyes, walking over to where he was laying and jumping onto him. He smiled and sat up, the cover falling off of his chest and making her smile even wider. June settled on his lap, a mischievous grin on his face as she did so, causing her to scoff. He wiggled his eyebrows, making her laugh as she got off of him and got back to changing.
"It is a very good morning. We need to get to JBs so we can melt that gold down". JJ said, pulling the blanket off and grabbing his shirt from the chair he put it on the night before. He was still amazed that he could even talk about the gold, knowing that they actually had it. "How's your arm?" He asked, pointing to the large bandage as she pulled on a button up. She struggled doing her buttons, the wound making her arm very weak.
"It hurts like shit and it's so weak. Can you do my buttons?" She asked, sticking out her bottom lip and giving him puppy dog eyes. He nodded, walking over and buttoning her up.
"Usually I'd be doing this in reverse." He said before finishing up the last button. She giggled at that and then turned away from him, slipping her sandals on and grabbing her keys from the bedside table.
"Come on stupid. You drive." She said, grabbing his shirt with her good arm and making her way down the stairs. Her parents didn't seem to be around, making the exit easy for them. The whole drive there they talked about the gold, what it means now that they knew where it was, the plan to get it, and so on. June kept looking at him, how the wind blew in his hair, how his smile stayed on his lips and she just couldn't help but admire him. She nodded along to what he was saying but she just couldn't pay attention because all she could think about is how happy she was. They had found the gold, they had actually done it. She had never felt this way with Zach, she had never had this much fun in her life, and she never wanted to go back. It was only up from here. Or so she thought.
"What are you staring at ugly?" JJ joked, breaking out of his conversation about the gold and glancing over at her. June gasped at his comment, smacking his arm. She smirked at him, covering her bullet wound with her hand.
"Not staring. Just admiring." She said raising an eyebrow.
"I know I'm good looking . It's nothing new." He answered, shrugging his shoulder with a smug smile. June rolled her eyes and looked away before a thought came to her head.
"Right right. Hey JJ?" She said, her smile dropping as she looked over at him again.
"Hm?" He asked, noticing the difference in her tone.
"At Midsummers, when you showed up with all those bruises... who did that to you? And don't lie because I know it wasn't Topper and them." Her eyebrows furrowed as he looked away and shifted uncomfortably in his seat.
"I- I don't -"
"Was it your dad?" June asked, remembering a backhanded comment that Pope had made once. JJs grip tightened on the steering wheel and that was enough for June to figure out the truth.
"JJ-"
"I don't want to talk about it okay? I'm good. We're good." JJ said, avoiding looking at her. June let it go, not wanting to ruin his mood. Instead she settled for reaching for his hand, squeezing it before changing the subject.
"Okay, I'm so excited about the gold." This was enough for JJ because not long after he launched back into conversation about the gold and the night before. When they pulled up to John Bs house June stepped out and made her way towards Sarah and Kie.
"Hey guys." She said, smiling at them.
"Hey. Come look at this picture Pope drew." June obeyed, walking over to look at the horribly drawn picture of the gold room and the well. They laughed at the quality before JJ dropped the gold in front of them. It was clean now , having been freshly washed off. Once again they all looked at it in a amazement for a second.
"Kie! This better work. We can't pawn this if there's a giant wheat symbol on it." JJ said, looking up at Kie. Kie raised her eyebrows, reaching behind her to grab the blow torch.
"It's gonna work." JJ sent Kie a smile, the girls jumping out of the van and JJ grabbing the gold. They threw it into a pot, Kie putting on some goggles before turning on the blow torch. June sat herself down on the ground by them watching as JJ and Pope did their handshake and Kie looked into the pot with excitement.
When they finished melting it down they all packed into the van, making their way to the pawn shop and passing the lump of gold around .
"Good job melting it down Dr. Frankenstein." JJ said, as they all got out of the van.
"Like you could've done any better." Kie said, shaking her head at him and giving him a dirty look.
"I could've. I took a welding class." They started to get into each other's faces, John b walking over to break up their little argument.
"Chill out, okay?"
"That's easy for you to say man. You're not the one who has to pawn this piece of shit off. How did I get this job anyway?" JJ said, pulling his backpack into his shoulder. June rolled her eyes, pulling her sunglasses over her eyes.
"Because you're the best liar." Pope said, informing him.
"Always complaining." June added, following them all into the pawn shop.
"Afternoon ma'am ." JJ said, walking into the store and smiling at the woman behind the counter. Kie lead the others down an aisle, the five of them positioning themselves so that they could listen in.
"Afternoon." The woman greeted him.
"I see you buy gold."
"That's what the sign say don't it?" JJ sat his bag down on the counter, pulling it open.
"Well I sure hope you buy a lot of it, because I'm about to blow your mind."
"I ain't got much mind left to blow so have at it." At that JJ pulled the large clump of gold out, sitting it on the counter and looking up at the woman.
"How bout them gold apples?" He said . The woman clearly didn't believe him, looking up at him with an amused smirk. She chuckled, shaking her head.
"That ain't real." She said.
"That ain't real?"
"It can't be." The pawnbroker was really laughing now, JJ trying to defend himself.
"Feel how heavy it is." June mentally cheered JJ on as he tried to sell it, a smile on her face. "Mhm. Mhm. Yeah let's get some light on that."
The lady pulled out a magnifying glass, which also had a light in it, looking at the gold. "Spray painted tungsten." She said.
"Spray painted tungsten? Really? Okay? Why don't you see how soft it is?" JJ said, crossing his arms over his chest and raising his eyebrows.
"You mind?" The lady asked, holding up a pick and a hammer.
"No go for it."
She knocked into it, using her finger to feel it. "Wow would you look at that?" JJ said.
"Hold your horses. We haven't gotten to the acid test yet." The last turned around to grab something, JJ looking back at his friends.
"Ooh, the acid test. My favorite guys." June nodded at him, JJ looking back as the woman dropped some acid onto the clump.
"Well it ain't plated and it ain't painted." The woman was now looking at it confused, shaking her head in disbelief and wondering if it was in fact real.
"I'm telling you ma'am. It's as real as the day is long."
"It looks like somebody tried to melt it down." The woman looked at JJ expectantly, waiting for his answer.
"My mom. She had all this jewelry laying around the house and she thought it was best to-to melt it's down. To "consolidate" it." JJ put up air quotes. Sarah and June shared a look, trying to stifle their laughs as the woman weighed the gold.
"Seven pounds? That's a lot of earrings." The woman really was not believing him. JJ spoke up again.
"Okay to be honest ma'am.... it's really hard to see my mom fall apart with Alzheimer's." June looked at Sarah again, mouthing 'what the fuck' and the both of them letting out a giggle.
"Give me a minute." The lady said, walking towards the office.
"Take your time." The lady disappeared behind the curtain. June took this as her chance to talk to JJ.
"Alzheimer's?" She said, walking up with Kie and Pope.
"What?" JJ said, readjusting his hat.
"You're sixteen."
"And? You don't have to be old for your parents to get Alzheimer's." The woman soon exited the office, holding a paper in her hands.
"So I Uh...I talked to my boss. And uh, this is what I can do." She said, sitting the paper down in front of him and making JJ sigh.
"Fifty thousand? You think I walked in here not knowing the spot price? Ma'am I know for a fact that this is worth 140 at least." JJ finished, pointing at the bold.
"Well sweetie you in a pawn shop. This ain't Zurich. Do I look Swiss to you?"
"Ninety . Or I walk."
"Seventy... half price...and uh, I don't ask questions about where you got this." JJ looked over at John B. Getting the go ahead and then looking back at the pawnbroker.
"I'm gonna need that in large denominations please." They all smiled at each other, realizing they had just made 70,000 dollars.
"Well here's the snag. I don't have that much denominated, not here anyways. I can write you a cashiers check."
"No ma'am I want the cold hard. That's what the sign says. Cash for gold. That's what I expect. I'm gonna get it in cold hard." JJ said, pointing up at the sign and then looking at her.
"Well I'll have to send you to the warehouse. I have the money there. Is that all right?"
"Where's this warehouse?" The lady gave them the directions, all of them piling back into the van.
