( sixteen. )
June stood in Heywards, reaching to grab a bag from the table. JJ slapped her hand away.
"No you're not lifting that." He said, grabbing the bag in her place.
"It's lettuce JJ. And I'm fine." June reached to grab the bag, practically ripping it out of his hand.
"That hole in your head begs to differ."
"Don't let it get in your head bro there was 4 of them 2 of us. That's some typical Kook shit right there." JJ continued on with the conversation they were having before.
"Hell yeah." Kie added in.
"And I know they like to play dirty." June said, a shot of pain going through her head.
"What was your thought process using your head?" JJ asked pointing to his head.
"I don't know man I just kinda acted off instinct. I was a cornered animal." Pope explained.
"Hey Pope, there's someone here to see you." Popes dad said, walking into the room. They all looked towards the door as Shoupe walked in. Kie and June shared a worried look.
"Evening officer." Pope answered, his mouth gaping as everyone else backed up.
"I have an arrest warrant for felony destruction of property."
"What?" Heywward said, shaking his head.
"Keep your hands where I can see them. Young lady, out of the way." Shoupe said, trying to get past Kie. June watched as JJ stared at Pope, lightly shaking his head.
"Hey Shoupe, whatd he do man?" Heyward called walking forward to try and help Pope.
"Look at the warrant."
"You're arresting him?" June said, walking towards them. "What the fuck?"
"You're just arresting my boy?" Heyward asked, clearly pissed off now. June ran a hand through her hair and followed three as they walked out. "Shoupe are you listening?"
Shoupe started reading him his rights as everyone started to freak out.
"You can't just do this." June said, walking right up beside Shoupe.
"How much did they pay you man?" JJ asked, clearly distressed. Shoupe started leading Pope out, June and Kie yelling after him, JJ trying to get at him. Popes face was shocked , frightened, and worried. JJ stopped in his place, looking down and then at June before he yelled.
"It wasn't him!" JJ pointed at himself.
"It was me. He tried to talk me out of it. But I was mad because he'd just been beaten up. I was so sick of those assholes from Figure Eight that I lost my shit. I can't let you take the blame for somethin' I did. You've got too much to lose." JJ finished, his face indescribable. June knew for a fact that he didn't do whatever it was, but that JJ was covering for Pope.
"JJ what are you doing?" Pope asked.
"I'm tellin' the truth. For once in my goddamn life I'm gonna tell the truth. I took his old mans boat too." JJ added. June stepped forward, putting a hand on JJs shoulder . He glanced at her with a forced smile. "It's okay. Gotta accept the consequences of my actions."
"What the hell?" Heyward said.
"JJ come on." Pope pleaded.
"Just shut up Pope! Just shut up. He's a good kid. You know where I'm from." JJ shifted his attention to Shoupe. June dropped her hand, not knowing what she can do to help the situation.
"Yeah." Shoupe answered.
"This was all me." JJ said. June's heart was beating fast, watching the scene unfold.
"That the whole truth?" Shoupe asked, looking towards Pope.
"That's The Whole truth, swear to God." JJ finished.
"I know what you think, damn it, I'm asking Pope." They all stood in silence for a few seconds, before Pope nodded, gritting his teeth.
"Yeah, that about covers it." Pope answered. Shoupe nodded, unlocking the handcuffs and putting them on JJ. Before getting into the car he sent a look towards June, a small smile on his face. She couldn't return it because she was too worried and shocked to even think about smiling.
The car soon drive away, Pope watching after it was an unimaginable terror in his eyes.
"Shit!" He yelled, throwing his hat on the ground and running inside. June crossed her arms over her chest, shaking her head as she made her way back inside.
"I think that's gonna be enough for me today." June said, grabbing her keys off the counter and making her way out to her car she had picked up this morning.
"See you guys later." June said, before pulling away and towards her home. She didn't know how she was gonna explain the gash on her forehead, her dirty clothes, or where she had been so she just hoped she wouldn't catch her parents.
She made it into her house, closing the front door behind her, trying to stay quiet. She ran up the stairs, closing her bedroom door behind her and letting out a breath of relief.
"Oh hello." Her mother said, making June jump and let out a yell.
"Oh, hey mom..." June said, avoiding looking at her mother and walking over to her closet.
"Where have you been?" Her mother asked, standing from the bed.
"Oh you know...out." June said with a forced smiled. Her mother stood in front of her, stopping her from being able to turn away.
"June whats this?" Her mother said, gasping as she went to touch the gash on her head.
"It's nothing. I fell." In some ways she was telling the truth it in other ways she was hiding it.
"Sure. You'll answer me eventually. But for now we have to get ready for Midsummers. That's why I was in here waiting for you." June groaned, suddenly remembering that the Midsummers was today.
"Your dress is on the bed, we need to get your makeup done so hurry." June's mother stepped out of the room and June was left with her thoughts and her dress. The dress was forest green, definitely nothing she would have picked out. She pulled it on, calling her mother back in to help her with her hair. Her mother braided flowers into her hair, covered up her cut, and they made their way downstairs to wait for her father. Her father came down a little later, tightening his tie and sending his family a smile.
"Ready guys?" He asked, making his way into the room they were standing in. June raised her eyebrows and forced a smile, nodding. The car ride was awe full, her parents lecturing her about leaving during dinner with the Roberts, how she ditched Zach as a date, and how Linda and Al were very upset because of it. When they got there she basically jumped out of the car, making a beeline for the waiter with champagne in hand. She grabbed it off the tray before anyone could say anything, gulping it down and grabbing another one. She found a seat outside, immediately sitting back in it and sipping on the champagne glass.
"June?" June turned her head to be greeted by Kie, a smile growing on her face.
"Thank God you're here. This night is gonna be the death of me." June said, standing from her spot.
"Already drinking?" Kie asked, pointing towards the champagne glass. June nodded, finishing it off and making her way toward another tray. Kie spotted Pope and made her way over there.
June joined them shortly, right as they started talking about the Kooks.
"Have you ever seen so many kooks in one place?" Kie said as they all turned to look around the party.
"Yeah. Last year." June thought back to last years Midsummers party where she and Zach had spent the whole time dancing and laughing. But other than that there was nothing very interesting about it.
"We're in the Lions den." At that exact moment June saw Zach walk through the doors, they caught each other's eyes and the June looked away. She looked at the glass in her hand and chugged it as well .
"Hey, have you guys heard from JJ?" Pope asked, looking between the two of them.
"Nope." June said, grabbing another glass of champagne from a nearby waiter.
"He'll be okay, he has the survival instincts of a cockroach." Kie said. "June maybe you should slow down. You might have to walk for the rest of the night maybe."
"Nah I'm good. I have some high ass tolerance Kie." June said, a grin on her face. Kie didn't believe her but smiled nonetheless.
"It's all my fault." Pope butted in, shaking his head.
"No. Nope . Don't blame yourself Pope." June said shaking her head as well.
"You didn't do this Pope. Topper almost killed you remember?" He nodded but he didn't seem to believe what she was saying. June raised her eyebrows before knocking back the rest of her glass. Suddenly everyone started clapping as Ward Cameron and his family came out into the yard.
"Here come Lord Capital and the exploiters." June held back a laugh as she saw Rose's hair band.
"She's definitely gonna poke someone's eye out with that." Pope commented which put June over the edge. She let out a loud laugh, Kie slapping her hand over Junes mouth as people looked their way.
"Yeah you're done." Kie said, grabbing the glass out of her hand and setting it on the table. June rolled her eyes and shined, making Kie laugh a little.
"Let's get this show started ."
