( nineteen. )
June had her elbows rested on her knees , her head in her hands as they sat in the waiting room of the hospital. Kie was bouncing her leg up and down in worry and Sarah was silently crying in the corner. JJ was pacing back and forth, trying to keep calm while Pope was staring at the vending machine. When the doctor came out they all looked up at him in anticipation. This was the moment of truth.
"You're friend is okay. He has a concussion and a fractured wrist but other than that he's fine. He's also extremely lucky. You kids should head home and get some rest. He can leave tomorrow morning." The doctor said, giving them all a smile before turning away. They all let out a collective sigh of relief, looking at each other and nodding.
"Concussion twins." June said, pointing to the gash on her forehead and causing them all to chuckle. She was now absolutely and completely sober, and able to process three things. One: John B was pushed form about 50 ft and he was fine. Two: John B and Sarah were together, and Kie was pissed. And three: She had kissed JJ again. She had to get out of there before all of these things came to light. She stood from her chair, a grimace on her face when she did so because her head was still pounding.
"I think I should probably head home." June said, waving at everyone as she passed them. She had had enough for tonight and she knew that she was in for it when she got home. "Shit my parents are gonna kill me." She turned back towards the group of teenagers. JJ walked over to her, giving her a small smile.
"Guys I'm taking June home." He said, turning back and looking at them before dropping this arm on her shoulder. This was one of June's revaluations coming to light and she was not here for it. She had been completely shitfaced when she kissed JJ, and he...was completely sober.
"I think I can manage." June said, ducking out of his arm. She started to walk away but JJ grabbed her arm and pulled her back.
"June you can't drive right now. Are you forgetting that you drank an insane amount of alcohol? Which now that I think about it...probably shouldn't happen while you have a concussion. And we really need to talk." JJ explained. He readjusted his hat and then raised his eyebrows, waiting for her to say something.
"JJ..."June really did not feel like arguing but she also didn't feel like talking about what she had done, and what was going on with them. She was beyond tired couldn't wait to get to her bed. "Whatever I just need to get to bed. This night has been too much for me." She turned away from him, leading the way to the parking lot, as he followed behind her. He jogged to catch up with her, bumping shoulders with her and stuffing his hands in his pockets.
"So..." JJ started, causing June to groan. She ran a hand over her face before looking at him.
"JJ please can this just wait. I'm not in the mood." June said, shaking her head at him.
"Yeah, right. Right. No I was just gonna ask how you were feeling. Still shitfaced or are you sober?" He asked, putting air quotes around sober. June shook her head again as they made it to the car. They both got in before she answered him.
"Sober I think. I can definitely feel...everything." She said, pointing towards her head and biting her lip. JJ followed her finger and then looked back at her lips, causing him to sigh.
"Carly don't do that." JJ looked away from her, looking at the road ahead of him and shaking his head.
"Do what JJ? I didn't even do anything." She bit her lip, running a hand through her now loose hair. She had no idea what he was talking about and frankly he was starting to get on her nerves a bit. She had a one track mind and it was set on a good ass night of sleep.
"Don't make that face." He said, pointing at her face. She slapped his hand away from her face, furrowing her eyebrows in confusion and irritation.
"And why the fuck not?" June questioned, crossing her arms defensively and leaning towards him.
"Because it makes me want to kiss you again." June leaned away from him now, a warm mushy feeling settling in her gut as she stared straight ahead at the road instead of at him. "But since you don't want to talk about it then I guess you should stop making that face before I do."
"No JJ. It's not that I don't want to talk about it okay? It's the fact that I'm so emotionally and physically drained right now that I can't fucking wrap my head around words to describe what's going on with us." June said, rubbing her eyes in frustration. "I knew this was what you wanted to talk about. I should've just walked home or something." Her voice was starting to raise and JJ was looking at her, beyond confused.
"Fine we won't talk about it."
"No JJ because you'll pout and sit there all the way back to the fucking house. I-I just want to not have to worry about something for a damn second." June was basically pleading now, begging to just have a normal night.
"I won't pout okay? Just calm down. Why're you so mad?" JJ asked her, instantly regretting it when he saw the glare she sent him. He started to shake his head.
"I'm mad JJ because now we're already talking about it, and now we have to finish the talk or I won't be able to sleep. So let's do it. Let's talk about it." June put one arm on the passenger side window, feeling the wind pull at her hair. Her eyes were burning directly into the side of JJs head, waiting for him to say something. This was the most serious she had even been. The most exposed and vulnerable she had ever been, and she hoped JJ wouldn't take advantage of that.
"I-I don't know what to say. I don't know." JJ said, lifting his free hand and running it through his hair again. June shook her head, trying to decide what to say. She was vulnerable and he didn't seem to know that whatever they said next would determine a lot for her.
"Fine I'll talk." June breathes out.
"Good."
"You kissed me in front of my house and it was amazing, I felt the fucking sparks and all the shit that people say. I got so excited. And then I saw you again the next day and it was radio silence. And I'm not gonna lie that hurt a lot that you didn't say or do anything. You acted like it never even happened. I've been wondering for days now what the fuck is going on. So I guess I got drunk and I couldn't help myself. I mean you were arrested and I was so fucking worried about you and then you showed up and surprised me and danced with me and honestly it's the best I've felt in awhile. So I kissed you. And JJ I just need to know... if you're leading me on just please please let me know before I get too far into this and then come out heartbroken. I don't know if I can handle my heart being broken again."
"Shit June." JJ said, pulling the car over to the side of the road so he could look at her. He unbuckled his seatbelt and turned towards her, but he was still unable to meet her eye.
"That's all you have to say JJ? 'Shit'? That's nice-"
"No that's not-"
"I get it-"
"June wait-" She started to unbuckle herself, reaching for the handle and pushing the door open.
"Fuck you JJ. I'll fucking walk. You let me spill my heart out and then don't even say-"
"June! I felt it, okay?! Please just close the door. I felt it too." June's heart was racing as a different side of JJ she had never seen before was coming out. She shut the door and let him talk.
"I felt the damn fireworks too. It scared the shit out of me so that's why I didn't say anything. Okay? I don't know what's going on with us but frankly it's the only good thing going for me right now. I just- I just need to make sure I don't mess it up. I'm just scared to mess it up June." They both sat in silence , their chests falling heavy as they stared at each other. June was debating what to do in her head, her mind telling her to kiss him and her body screaming to go home and go to bed. She knew if she kissed him this would seal their fate, this would really make or break them. Before she could finish coming up with a decision JJ sighed, putting his head in his hands.
"Fuck this. It's too complicated and I just wanna fucking smoke or something. I knew if I said something this would hap-" June cut him off by climbing over her arm rest and sitting on JJs lap, pulling his head out of his hands and kissing him hard. He accepted the kiss, his hands squeezing her hips as she tangled her fingers in his hair.
"Okay I didn't expect that to happen." JJ said , when they pulled back for air. June rested her forehead on his, biting her lip.
"I guess I'm full of surprises." June said, smiling as she said it.
"Well I can guarantee you that I love surprises." JJ said, squeezing her hips again and letting out a sigh. "I should head home." JJ asked her, pulling his head back from hers and finally meeting her eyes.
"No you shouldn't." June said before pulling him toward her by his shirt. He smiled into their kiss, his hands dropping to her thighs as he sat up to kiss her. She let her hands wander, reaching under his shirt to feel his warm skin in her fingertips. Her back pressed against the horn, causing it to beep making them practically jump apart.
"Oh shit." She said letting out a laugh and putting her head into his neck. He couldn't help but join her in laughter. June kissed his shoulder before pulling away from him, climbing off of him and back into the passenger seat. JJ looked at her and pouted, causing her to grab his chin and pull him in for a small kiss.
"Now please take me home." June said, a perfect smile on her now swollen looking lips. She grabbed his hand in hers, sighing as she looked at them. JJ nodded, starting the journey back to her house. For the rest of the night they joked about Roses flower crown and Mr. Dunleavy who thought JJ was an actual waiter at the party. By the time they parked outside of June's house her face was already getting sore from laughing and cutting up.
"Well." June said as JJ looked over at her, his eyes tracing over her figure.
"Yep. I'm gonna head home." June forced a smile as she let go of his hand, reaching over to press a kiss to his cheek . She pulled the door handle, stepping out of the van and into the yard. She waved as he put the van in gear, slowly pulling away. She looked down at her feet, noticing that she had left her shoes at the club. She smiled again before snapping her head up to look at the van, which still wasn't too far away. She couldn't let him leave. She started to run after the van, waving her arms frantically.
"Wait! JJ!" She yelled after him. She continued to run after the van, her feet slapping against the pavement as she continued to call for him. He finally noticed her, instantly stopping the car and cutting it off. He jumped out as fast as he could, making his way towards the girl who was standing in the middle of the street. All the problems of the night were soon forgotten as they finally met again, him grabbing her cheeks and kissing her , causing them to both stumble. He steadied her as she now grabbed his hips. When they pulled away June looked at her feet, noticing how bad they felt after running barefoot down the street.
"Are you barefoot?" JJ asked, looking down as well and trying not to laugh. "Where the hell did your shoes go?" He asked.
"I think Mr. Dunleavy might've stole them." At that JJ couldn't help his laugh, June joining him as they stood in the middle of the street.
"This is like total movie scene bullshit." June said referring to their last kiss.
"Id say it's a pretty damn good movie. It might need a little more action though." JJ added, making them both chuckle again. June looked past him and at the van which was safely parked on the side of the road. She dropped her hands from his sides, grabbing his hand instead and pulling him away from the middle of the street. She pulled him all the way back to her house, into the front door, and up the stairs as quietly as possible, finally letting out a breath of relief as she closed her bedroom door behind her.
"Your room is nice. Ten out of ten. " JJ said, sitting on the edge of her bed and taking in the room. JJ pulled her to him by the hand she was holding and she giggled as he wrapped his arms around her waist.
"Very nice room."
"Shut up JJ." June kissed him again, forgetting all of the actions and events of the night and focusing on the moment she was in now.
