17. Younger Brother
Jihyun giggled loudly as he threw open the door, startling Yuri, who sat quietly on the bed, adjusting her hair.
"Jihyun, what the hell?" Jimin shouts from behind.
Jihyun quickly entered the room with a wide grin. "Oh, I knew it! It was you, Yuri, his fiancée, right? I am his younger brother, Jihyun. Nice to meet you." He greeted her, took steps towards her, and extended his hands for a handshake.
"Nice to meet you as well, Jihyun." Said the now nicely dressed Yuri, as she accepted his handshake.
"Hyung, I don't see why you won't let me meet your beautiful fiancée until now. Were you afraid that I'll take her away from you?" Jihyun said as he looked toward Jimin teasingly.
Yuri laughed, taking it to be just a joke or a tease, but Jimin's expression hardened as he comprehended his words very clearly.
"Certainly not. You are not capable enough to have me scared." Jimin gritted his teeth.
Jihyun turned completely away from Yuri now facing Jimin. His smile disappeared for a second, but his lips quickly stretched sickly sweet as he tilted his head to the side. "Really?" He chuckled.
Yuri's laughter soon gave into confusion as she noticed the unsettling tension between them. She found Jimin's gaze very strange, something she had never seen before.
She laughed awkwardly to ease down the tension and asked Jihyun to take a seat.
"You are beautiful, Yuri!" Jihyun flashed her a big smile and moved towards to the couch to sit on it.
Yuri's lips curled upwards to form a shy simile as she replied with a 'thanks'.
"Jihyun," Jimin's voice calm but firm. "This is my bedroom, not a hangout spot. If you want to talk, we'll do it somewhere else. Now, get up."
Yuri felt a bit uncomfortable with Jimin's unnecessary rudeness towards his brother. Were they in a fight? Yuri couldn't help but wonder.
Jihyun smiled innocently at Jimin before he pulled his legs up to take a comfortable position on the couch. "Right, my brother's bedroom."
Saying so, he laughed again. Yuri giggled along him, finding him cute, but Jimin stood pissed.
"I'm a bit hungry, though. Do you mind if I ask for some snacks?"
Yuri's eyes lit up. "Actually, I could go for some snacks too!" she said with a cheerful laugh.
Jimin sighed heavily, clearly irritated but unable to refuse Yuri. "Fine. I'll get something," he muttered, shooting Jihyun a pointed look before leaving the room.
The door clicked shut behind him, and Yuri turned her attention to Jihyun. "You're very different from Jimin," she said with a laugh. "You're so... carefree."
Jihyun chuckled, leaning back into the couch. "That's one way to put it. My brother's always been the serious one, hasn't he? Bet he doesn't tell you much about me."
Yuri tilted her head, curious. "Not really. He said you're his younger brother, but that's about it."
Jihyun's smile turned a shade colder, though his voice remained light. "It's nice to finally meet you, Yuri. I've been curious about the woman who managed to get under his thick skin."
Yuri giggled. "I wouldn't say I've done that. Jimin's a sweetheart when you get to know him."
Jihyun raised an eyebrow, his lips curling into an amused smirk. "A sweetheart, huh? That's... a new one."
Yuri hesitated, sensing a subtle shift in his tone. "What do you mean?"
"Oh, nothing," Jihyun said quickly, waving a hand. "Just that my brother's not exactly known for being soft. He's more of the protective, overbearing type. But I suppose with you, he's different."
Yuri smiled, though something about his words left her unsettled. "He just wants the best for me," she said quietly.
"Of course he does," Jihyun replied, his smile widening. "You're precious, Yuri. Anyone can see that." Yuri smiled at his kind words.
"So, tell me, Yuri," he began, his voice soft and curious, "how did you meet my brother?"
Yuri's face contorted with confusion at the question. "Oh, that's surprising that you have no idea," she said with a small laugh.
Yuri had already sensed the brothers were not close, but she didn't know they were so detached that the younger didn't even know even a bit of what was going on in the Older's life.
Jihyun rolled his eyes playfully. "Didn't you see how he treats his younger brother, it's obvious I am unaware of the things the whole world knows."
"Well, that's a bit boring story. It was arranged. He was cold and intimidating at first but grew softer with time." Yuri said as if she was herself unaware how events took turn so smoothly in her life that it didn't even make noise.
Jihyun tilted his head slightly, his smile unwavering. "Cold and intimidating? That sounds more like the Jimin I know." His tone was light, but there was an edge to his words. "It's surprising he let his guard down for you. That's... rare."
Yuri nodded thoughtfully. "He's very private, I've noticed that. But I think that's what makes our connection special. He doesn't open up to everyone."
Jihyun chuckled softly, shaking his head. "Special, huh? That's good to hear. My brother has always been the type to keep his walls up—always so focused on being perfect, on doing everything right." He paused, his gaze flickering toward Yuri. "But doesn't that get... exhausting for you? Trying to keep up with his expectations?"
Yuri blinked, surprised by the question. "I wouldn't say that. Jimin doesn't pressure me. He's supportive, and he respects my decisions. I think we balance each other out."
Jihyun raised an eyebrow, clearly intrigued. "Supportive? Hmm." He leaned back into the couch, crossing his arms. "You're lucky, then. He wasn't always like that."
Yuri tilted her head, curiosity piqued. "What do you mean?"
"Oh, just that Jimin can be... intense," Jihyun said with a sly smile. "Growing up with him, it was always about control—doing things his way or not at all. He has a hard time letting go of that need to be in charge. But I guess with you, he's softened up."
Yuri hesitated, unsure of how to respond. "Well, relationships are about compromise, right? We've both had to adjust."
Jihyun nodded, his smile turning a shade more genuine. "You seem like the patient type. That's probably what he needs. I have to admit, I didn't expect him to find someone like you."
Yuri laughed lightly. "What's that supposed to mean?"
"Just that you're... different from the people he usually surrounds himself with. You're warm, approachable. Not like the polished, corporate types he's always dealing with."
Yuri smiled at the compliment. "Well, I guess opposites attract."
Jihyun's eyes glinted with something unreadable. "I guess they do." He paused, as if considering something. "You must be pretty brave, too. It takes a lot to deal with Jimin's... protective side."
Yuri laughed, though she felt a faint unease creeping in. "He's not that bad. He just cares a lot, that's all."
Jihyun leaned forward again, his voice dropping slightly. "Just be careful, Yuri. Sometimes caring too much can feel like control. And trust me, my brother doesn't like losing control."
Yuri frowned slightly, the words settling uneasily in her mind. "I don't think it's like that," she muttered softly.
"Of course not," Jihyun said quickly, flashing her a reassuring smile. "I'm just teasing. You're clearly good for him."
Yuri nodded, though the conversation left her feeling unsettled. "What about you, Jihyun?" she asked, hoping to shift the focus. "Are you close to your brother?"
Jihyun's smile faltered for a split second before he recovered. "Close? I guess you could say that. We've had our ups and downs, like any siblings. We've had our moments. Sibling rivalry, you know how it is," He paused, as if debating whether to continue. "I'll admit, but deep down, we're family, so we always come back to each other."
Yuri smiled, finding the answer heartwarming. "That's nice. Family is important."
Jihyun's smile widened, though it didn't quite reach his eyes. "It is," he agreed. "But sometimes, family can also be... complicated."
Before Yuri could ask what he meant, he sat back with a relaxed sigh. "Anyway, enough about Jimin and me. Tell me more about you. What do you do when you're not busy keeping my brother in line?"
Yuri laughed, appreciating the lighthearted turn in the conversation. "Oh, nothing too exciting. I'm into painting and reading, mostly. It helps me unwind after a long day."
"Painting?" Jihyun's interest seemed genuine. "That's impressive. What kind of things do you paint?"
"Landscapes, mostly," Yuri replied, smiling. "It's calming. That's actually something I've started recently. What about you? Any hobbies?"
Jihyun chuckled, rubbing the back of his neck. "Oh, nothing as creative as painting. I guess I'm more into... people-watching. You'd be surprised how much you can learn just by paying attention."
Yuri tilted her head, intrigued. "That's an interesting hobby."
"It's useful," Jihyun said with a smirk. "People reveal more than they realize if you know what to look for."
There was something about the way he said it that made Yuri pause, but before she could dwell on it, the door opened, and Jimin stepped back in with a tray of snacks. His gaze flicked between Yuri and Jihyun, and something about the way his brother was smirking made his eyes narrow.
"Here," Jimin said curtly, placing the tray on the table. "Eat quickly, Jihyun. You're not staying long."
"Thanks, Hyung," Jihyun said cheerfully, reaching for a drink. "You're such a great host."
Yuri laughed lightly, but Jimin didn't share her amusement. His gaze remained fixed on Jihyun, his jaw tight.
The whole time Jihyun was in, Yuri could only pay attention to Jimin's unsettling demeanor. She had to admit Jihyun was a bit...weird, but he wasn't bad. He seemed nice. It was finally when Jihyun reluctantly decided to leave.
Jimin heaved a big sigh as he saw his car driving away. He turned around to notice Yuri looking at the door frame intensely, as if lost somewhere.
