Part 2, Chapter 18 "Fixed"
Dimentio POV
I was sitting in the audience, watching Daisy on trial. Since this was a 'formal event,' they made her plead her case while wearing her old orange dress. I've never seen it before, but apparently this is what she use to wear.
The jury talked it over. She basically told everyone exactly what went down. But since her military leader was....well, dead, along with all the other witnesses, it was hard to prove her innocence.
I was called to explain what I knew a few times, but I wasn't very involved. People would shush me whenever I tried to object, and they wouldn't really let me speak. It was rather annoying.
A bunch of toads were serving in the jury, so I was pretty nervous. Once their votes were cast, I took a deep breath. I could see Daisy begin to sweat.
The judge ordered everyone to be silent, then spoke.
"The Jury has decided, now that all the information has been presented, that Princess Daisy of Sarasaland has been found.....NOT GUILTY! You may all be dismissed."
I immediately stood up and applauded. "YES! Bravo! What a show!" A few people gave me weird looks as they left the courtroom, but I didn't care.
I ran the opposite way, up towards the front of the room to Daisy. She was smiling a huge smile. "I believe a congratulations is in order." I told her. She chuckled, then pulled me into a hug. "I was pretty nervous, not gonna lie. But I knew we'd have this case in the bag."
I let go and looked at a clock on the wall. "I need to get to Luigi and give him his daily dose."
She nodded and took my hand. "Well, then let's go! Has he woken up yet?" I shook my head. "Not that I'm aware of."
Together, we made our way back to the hospital. Since I have to be under surveillance and Mario wasn't with me, a toad guard had to escort us. They didn't really like when I'd teleport, so we walked.
When we got there, Mario was sitting in a chair next to Luigi's bed. Luigi appeared to still be asleep.
"Has he woken up yet?" Daisy asked. Mario nodded. "Yes. He was awake this morning, then Mr. L said he was also awake during lunch."
I nodded, then walked over. I held my hands over him and closed my eyes.
It only took me a few minutes. I relaxed once it was done. My magic has returned for the most part, now.
Also, good news! About those tasers, that toad, Tod stated that they were an inhumane way to deal with criminals since they could leave lasting effects. There's a small scar on my side from when I got hit last, but I was lucky. If I got hit one more time according to doctors I would have lost my magic permanently. So those have been banned.
Mario seemed a little scared of me at first, but he's gotten use to me over the past few days. He's pretty much stuck with me until the Mushroom Kingdom deems me, 'trustworthy.'
Daisy looked down at Luigi. "How was he? When he woke up. Was he okay?" Mario slowly shook his head. "He didn't sound good, but I think that he's himself again. For the most part. That book isn't controlling him anymore. But he's....pretty horrified with what he's done."
I nodded. "Mario....do you know if we could have a minute with him?"
He gave Daisy a concerned look. She smirked. "Don't worry. I'll keep an eye on Dimentio. I know he's supposed to be under your surveillance.'"
Mario slowly nodded, then left. "Call me in if anything happens."
Once he left, I slowly let my guard down. Daisy patted my shoulder.
"....He'll be okay."
I slowly shook my head. "He's gonna be scarred for life."
She slowly let out a breath.
"Do.... you know the song Auld Lang Syne?"
I nodded. "Yes. Everyone knows it. It's often sung at funerals or at new years. Why?"
She smiled a sad smile. "It marks the ending of something old. But the beginning of something new."
She slowly started singing.
".....Should auld acquaintance be forgot and never brought to mind?"
I smiled, and joined her.
"Should auld acquaintance be forgot and days of auld lang syne?
For auld lang syne, my dear, for auld lang syne,
We'll take a cup o' kindness yet, for days of auld lang syne."
I could see Luigi slowly open his eyes.
"Am I dead? Why are you singing that?"
Daisy immediately bent down and hugged him. "LUIGI! YOU'RE AWAKE!"
I could see him smile briefly at her. "Daisy, are you wearing a dress?" He softly asked. She let go and nodded. "Ah, yes. These are my uncomfortable fancy clothes. Feast your eyes, because I'm probably gonna burn it as soon as possible. Do you know how hard it is to walk in heels?!"
Luigi giggled a little, then looked over at me. His eyes went wide, "Your....your mask. It's gone."
I shrugged. "Yeah. I don't need it anymore."
Luigi squeezed his eyes shut. "W-what are you guys doing? Why won't you just let me die? I'm broken way beyond repair.-" "Yeah. So was I. But that didn't stop you from fixing me," I interrupted.
I sighed. "You...you changed me, You saved me from myself. Now, I'm going to return the favor."
He looked down. "I can never get out of this. Even if they let me go, I'll be haunted by what I've done or the rest of my life. I wasn't strong enough. I wasn't strong enough to fight the book. I just let it win."
Daisy sighed.
"You don't think I'm haunted by what I've done? My kingdom fell. People died because I wasn't ready to rule."
I grabbed his hand. "And I nearly ended all worlds. You think I don't feel guilty every day for what I did."
"....We may be messed up. But we're all messed up, together." Daisy stated. She leaned down and kissed his forehead. "But don't worry. We're going to fix each other." She reached for my hand. "As a team."
Luigi looked down and slowly smiled. "Thanks....guys."
It was his old smile. I kinda missed his old smile.
We all waited in silence for a moment.
"You know.... Varian said that Mr. L thinks you're cute." Luigi randomly stated. My face immediately flushed while Daisy burst out laughing.
"Dude, you missed it earlier! They kissed!" Daisy chimed. I buried my face in my hands. Luigi gasped. "Really?! Awww." Daisy leaned on my shoulder. I softly chuckled. "Yeah. Yeah. We kissed." Daisy smirked. "I can't believe you got a boyfriend before me. What was it like?! Are you guys dating now?!"
Luigi had a small smile on his face. Usually, I wouldn't be comfortable talking about this stuff, but I could see it was distracting him, so, so be it.
Third Person POV
Mr. L and Varian were sent home the next day. Since Varian already had a house, Mr. L just made himself at home there for the time being.
Dimentio was required by the law to stay near Mario. Eventually, Luigi no longer needed any more doses of Magic. He was for the most part, physically healed. Now to begin the emotional healing.
They avoided leaving him alone. He was under house arrest since Dimentio argued for him that it was the books fault, though Luigi saw it as 100% his own fault. So he spent most of his time cooped up in his old home with Mario. Dimentio would sleep on the couch since he needed to stay close.
Daisy, went off to try to rebuild her Kingdom. She felt like she owed it to Sarasaland. Peach sent over some aid to help, since the Mushroom Kingdom had supplies to spare now. But Daisy tended to visit a lot.
Though it was very hard, Luigi slowly began to trust himself again. It was very difficult when memories haunted his dreams. Mario and Dimentio had to do their best to act as therapists, which was difficult because neither were good at that. But, them just being there trying helped.
He always had Dimentio and Mario there with him. He relaxed knowing that if he fell, they'd catch him.
He could trust them to catch him.
