Chapter 2
Third Person POV
Mario followed the kid into his lab. Varian, quietly tried composing himself, making sure Mario couldn't tell that he was just crying. He lead Mario straight to the weapon, and picked it up. "Okay, so what do we wanna check? I ran a diagnostic on it earlier, so we're all good there, and we already tested it, so there's not much more to do," Varian said. Mario examined it.
"Well, is there a safety on it?" Varian looked up, his eyes meeting Mario's. ".......oops." Mario smiled and rolled his eyes. "Don't worry about it, we'll just add one. It shouldn't take to long." Varian smiled and let out a sigh of relief, and stepped forward to place the weapon back on the table, when he accidentally stepped on an empty flask lying on the floor, causing him to fall backward and hit his head, making a big crash and causing a lot of empty beakers fall and shatter around him.
"Whoa, kid you okay?" Mario asked, trying not to laugh at the kid's clumsiness. Varian looked up at him. "Yeah, I'm fine." He touched the back of his head, then held his hand in front of his face. There was a little blood on it. He began to feel light headed. "Oh no...."
Varian then passed out, his arm falling to the side, accidentally hitting and activating the weapon. He always passed out at the sight of blood. It was one of his things, so Mario wasn't to worried. "Hey, kid? You okay?"
Mario focused on the hurt kid, not even noticing the activated weapon. Varian's eyes began to open again, he had only been out for a few seconds, which was about the normal amount of time for him to be passed out. "Huh? Yeah, I'm good," He said, when he looked at the weapon lying next to him, activated. The kid's eyes went wide, when the gun immediately fired at Mario.
Mario froze, his body turning a greyish color, his eyes turning cold. He had his hand outstretched towards where Varian was sitting. Varian jumped in shock and immediately picked himself up. "Whoa! Mario? Mario??" He quickly reached down for the gun. "D-don't worry, just gimme a second. I'll fix it!"
He picked up the gun, when it slipped out of his hands. Ugh, why was he so clumsy?? He stumbled around, trying to catch it and get ahold of it, when it fell to the ground.
And shattered.
Varian's eyes went wide. "No, NO NO NO NO!" He cried out, dropping to his knees, scrambling to pick up the pieces. "Mario's soul, NO NO NO!" He cried, tears filling his eyes. He quickly got up and ran outside. "I-I'm going to get help!"
Varian POV
I ran as fast as I could into town. "HELP! SOMEBODY! MY FRIEND, I NEED HELP!" As soon as I ran in, the streets seemed to clear. Everyone got out of sight as soon as I arrived. Tears fell down my cheeks. "Please, someone, I need help! Please." I cried.
But nobody came.
No, my only real friend, the only person helping me get by in life, and I killed him too.
Suddenly, another realization hit me.
"LUIGI!" I cried, as I sprinted as fast as I could towards his house. "Oh no no no. I killed his brother. I killed his brother!" I cried, before bursting in the door. Luigi was sitting down, happily reading a book. I immediately ran in and hugged him. He seemed a little shocked. I started explaining as fast as I could. "Luigi, Luigi I'm sorry. I-I messed up big time and I don't know what to do, I need help! I messed up again. T-the people are right, I am dangerous. They should lock me up someplace far far away so I can't hurt anyone anymore. Luigi, I don't know what to do. Please tell me what to do."
Third Person POV
A confused expression swept over Luigi's face, which quickly shifted to concerned. "Varian? What's wrong? Where's Mario?" Varian sobbed. Luigi kneeled down and wiped the kid's tears away. He began to feel worried. "Is he hurt? What happened?" Varian just continued to sob. "Alright....why don't you just take me to him." Luigi offered. The kid slowly nodded.
Varian led Luigi to the lab. The door was open. Varian stood in the doorway, tears flooding his face. He didn't know how Luigi would handle this. "Okay, Luigi. Listen, I'm going to explain to you exactly what happened before I show you." Luigi nodded. He was feeling pretty nervous now. Varian sighed. "Okay, *sniff* Well Mario and I have been working on a device which would freeze a person, taking their soul away and keeping it within the device. It is also capable of returning said soul, leaving the person completely unaffected." Luigi nodded. Varian looked down. "I tripped, and passed out. When I woke up, the device immediately fired at Mario." Luigi's face turned dark. "What??..... But you can fix it, right? You just said that you could return the soul." Varian looked down, tears staining his face. "I dropped the gun. AND IT BROKE, HIS SOUL IS GONE, HE'S GONE!" Luigi gasped, tears beginning to fall.
Varian dropped to his knees. Luigi stepped around him, to see a grey, frozen version of his brother. "N-no. Mario?" Luigi asked. He ran up and touched Mario's shoulder. His skin was cold and hard. He didn't feel human. Luigi collapsed onto his frozen, soulless brother, wrapping his arms around him and crying. "Mario? Please, you were the only person I could talk to. You were my everything," Luigi said through tears.
He got up, turned around, and ran outside. "HELP! SOMEONE! ANYONE! MY BROTHER!" No one was outside. Varian followed him out. "I-it's no use. I already tried. No one will help." Luigi looked down, breathing heavily.
"Y-you. What did you do?" He asked quietly. Varian squeezed his eyes shut, quietly sobbing. Luigi turned to face him, filled with rage and sadness now.
"WHAT DID YOU DO??"
Luigi POV
About a week had passed since the incident. I didn't get much sleep that night, or any night for that matter. I refused to talk to Varian, or to even leave my house. I think I heard that Varian turned himself into the authorities, begging to be arrested. The kid felt so guilty. The toads had no problem locking him up, since he did technically commit a crime. I didn't object to them taking the kid away. He did take my brother away after all.
It hurt. It hurt so bad. Now I was alone. And the worst part, no one cared. Not even Princess Peach! When the word got around to her, I heard she was sad, but not nearly as sad as she should have been. I heard she only cried for a day. A DAY!
No one will even help me get him back. Everyone just ignores me and runs away. But it's not like they could help anyway. No one could help. There was no way to fix this.
Eventually, I summoned the courage to go over to Varian's lab, where Mario was frozen. I looked around. There had to be answers here somewhere. I desperately searched around, but nothing made sense. Why did that kid have to use such big words in his notes?? Couldn't he have just spoken normal English? I looked into Mario's frozen, cold eyes. Tears filled mine again. "There has to be someone who can help me."
But no one could help me? I don't know anyone who is capable of doing the impossible.
That's when a small thought formed in the back of my mind. At first I pushed it away, because I hated the idea.
"Not him, anyone but him," I told myself, but the more time passed by, the more I would think about it.
I mean, he was able to nearly end all worlds. Maybe he was also capable of helping me.
"I can't. How would that even work? It's impossible. Plus, he would never help me," I told myself. But I was growing more and more desperate.
I eventually went home. I pushed that persisting thought to the back of my mind. I couldn't ask him for help. Definatly not. Not after what he did.
A few more weeks passed. Pretty much everyone forgot Mario, which frustrated me, since he was the single most important person in the world to me. Still, I had to remain sane.
I had to smile, for him.
That same thought overtime grew more and more dominant in my brain, but still I pushed it aside. It was not an option. No way.
But, the thought kept eating away at me. Until one night, I cracked.
I made my way into Mario's room, and looked through his old Important Items. Inside was the return pipe to Flipside. I got it out and sighed. "Here I go....."
