4- The Game Will Change You

Light shone through a prison-like window as Hazel awoke. The small beam of light she saw would never have woken her up in reality, so she assumed it was telling her to get up and go outside. As Hazel stepped out her door, she noticed that she was one of the last out. Tom and Claire seemed to be the only ones missing.

"Where exactly are those two?" Skye asked, and Parker sighed.

"I guess I'll go wake up Tom." He said, and walked quickly in the direction of his house. Hazel bit her lip, as there was a yell of surprise from inside. Everyone rushed over, only to see a horrific sight that left their mouths hanging wide open. Hazel pretended to be surprised too, even though she knew inside that it was her fault. Adam had already began to pull out Tom's box. He opened it, then read the will aloud along with his role.

"Tom the vigilante." He read "Night one, can't shoot."

He closed the box, set it back on Tom's desk, and started to walk out. Everyone else followed, and Hazel could have sworn she saw a few tears fall. Claire still wasn't outside, but everyone seemed to already know the answer. This time, only Kayla stepped inside to retrieve the box.

"Claire the lookout." She read from the piece of paper she had pulled from her friend's drawer. "The rest of it's blank."

"Tom even said for the killers not to kill. So, why did they?" Parker questioned, buy no one seemed to have an answer.

"Maybe the killers could give themselves up. That way, we could all just be done with this already!"

At that, everyone turned to face the one who had spoke. It was Skye.

"Skye, are you feeling okay?" Hazel asked her. Her friend was usually more calm than this.

"What's that supposed to mean?" Skye snapped. Then, she seemed to calm herself. "Sorry, I don't know what came over me. For a second there, I just felt... Angry at something."

"So, was the note right? This game we're all stuck inside. Is it really changing us...?" Kayla asked. This made Hazel flinch. Was she going to actually turn into a killer? Parker interrupted her thoughts.

"Look, this game can try to change us. But no matter what goes down here, we won't let this experience make us any different than we are, am I right?"

Everyone nodded in agreement. Hazel then noticed Adam eyeing the pole in the middle of the town. She noticed there was now a second part added to it horizontally, and a rope dangling from the new piece. The rope was tied in the shape of a noose. Kayla dropped the note, and everyone seemed to instinctively walk towards the center. As they did so, everyone filed themselves into the path that stretched from their home.

"So, what are we going to do with this? I mean, we aren't actually going to hang people are we?" Parker asked, and Hazel shuddered at the thought. If her friends decided to use it, she could be called out and hung. She didn't even realize she was saying it until she heard herself speak.

"I don't want any more death, and I especially don't want to watch my friends die in front of me. We shouldn't do it."

Hazel felt a bit shocked at her own words, but saw everyone else nod in agreement.

"I don't want to watch anyone die either." Skye said. She was fully calm now.

"So, what exactly are we going to do during the day? I mean, we should be doing something, right?" Said Adam

"There's not really anything TO do though. I mean, really. We're stuck inside a game that wants us to murder our friends at night. What are we supposed to do during the day? Card games or something?" Kayla said sarcastically.

At her words, the sky seemed to darken.

"Already?" Parker exclaimed "we barely got a chance to talk!"

Regardless of any shouts of protest, each of the friends were pulled back into their homes.

The next night had begun.
