Chapter 4
[Nona Larsen]
The only thing I like about parties is having the chance of hooking up with guys. People have always called me a slut for not wanting to stick to a single relationship, but I don't care. I want to do what truly makes me happy. Staying with the same guy for many years doesn't.
Yet, I feel like Jarvis Harding is different from the rest. I can't say exactly if I can trust me or the other way around. What matters is that I try, though. I've never backed down when it comes to challenges, and this is going to be a tough one. Everyone at school has good reasons not to trust me, especially Jarvis' friends. For once, I'd like to prove them wrong. Starting from tonight.
As I approach him, he turns hesitantly, knowing that his best friend might pop by and take him away out of jealousy or distrust. I mean, she doesn't own him, so she doesn't get to tell him who to hang around with.
He says hello, ignoring the other girl, who in turn leaves. Good for us. We can talk alone and get a beer together, as two people who are trying to know each other more.
"So, hi, Nona. What a surprise. I didn't expect you to come." I'm shocked as he pronounces these words. He clearly doesn't realize that Fallon and I are mortal enemies. To be fair, I don't get along with nearly anyone at school. No-one wants to deal with the so-called 'wild child,' so I kind of understand them. Everyone goes their own way, and that's it.
"Jarvis, you don't need to act surpised. You're only person I actually like." That's the truth, even though I have to admit I've said so to every single guy I've gone on a date with. Yeah, I've already broken some hearts before and there's a chance Jarvis is the next one in the list.
"But-" He tries to protest, but I don't mind. I want to be with him, I want him to know that I'm interested in trying out something with him, and tonight is the perfect chance. How can I convince him, though? He'll ask me questions, he'll want to see if I have second motives. He's right. Trusting people is a lot harder than believed.
Who am I to talk about trust, though? I've deceived two or three guys and shouldn't brag about it.
I decide to break the ice with the test matter, yes, the one that saw me get into trouble for something I never did. "Do you think I stole those papers as the rest of the student body says?" I ask, for the first time worried about his reaction. Until now, I've never even given a damn about what other people think of me. Wow, tables are already turning.
He shrugs. "I don't see why you're getting accused of something you didn't even know about," he points out. "This whole situation is sketchy as fuck, but since the majority of the other students are a bunch of sheep, I can't trust them to find out the truth on their own instead of believing rumors."
"You're damn right, Jarvis!" I sigh as I vent my frustration at the common lack of critical thinking at this school. No-one even bothers straying from their usual long string of prejudice because it's not convenient to them. Fuck convenience. It's not that they have any other choice, by the way.
I go on. "You're the only one who understand me. No-one else does. Even the Principal thinks I stole them." I want to break everything. I don't give a damn about possibly being kicked out for wrecking havoc, I want those brainless sheep to listen to me. If they don't want to, then it's their loss, not mine.
"So, what are you going to do? Are you trying to defend yourself against the Principal or just letting him make a fool out of himself?" he asks, questioning my intentions. He has a point. Should I tell him what I truly think of him straight away or let him make a poor figure with this false accusation?
It's not time for making such a hard decision, so I change subject. "Okay, let's talk about something else. Why are you here? Don't tell me you have a soft spot for Little Miss President. If so, don't even-"
He cuts me off. I've gone a little overboard, to be honest. Why would someone like Jarvis Harding even pay attention to Fallon Snow? The only thing he'd gain by talking to hear is a massive headache. "Nona, I didn't choose to come here," he explains indeed. "Jay and Audrey made me."
I snicker. "Your friends? Are you still letting them condition you? Come on, just tell them to go and take a hike. I did so with Belkis and Beulah." I don't expect him to understand. He seems to value loyalty a lot, so it's not a surprise that he still sticks with this friend. They haven't betrayed him yet, or this is what I think.
"You told your own friends to fuck off, like, what?" I don't want to tell him exactly why I did so, but since he seems to understand that the situation is fucked up, I have no other choice than explaining what led me to part ways from Belkis and Beulah.
I sigh and drag him to the toilet, away from prying eyes. That is, unless Fallon's parents had cameras installed at every corner of the house.
I warn. "We should be safe, at least for now. But, please, keep your voice down, or else someone will hear us and might use our little conversation against us."
He hesitates. "O-okay. I think I can keep quiet at least until you're done."
I smirk, pleased at what I've just bargained. An oblivious guy at my feet, just as usual. This time, however, he has more to offer rather than a mere six pack or perfectly white teeth. He's perfect as he is, even though he looks average to the rest.
"Okay, Jarvis, why I dumped Belkis and Beulah is actually related to the allegedly stolen papers. They believe rumors instead of me. They don't care about the truth, only to look good." Even though I put it rather simply, it's obvious that this has been the most painful decision I've taken lately. I'm sure Jarvis doesn't want to be in my shoes. Nonetheless, this doesn't mean he should keep trusting his friends. They could surprise him in the wrong way, to say the least.
"Oh, that sucks," he comments, barely repressing a disgusted look. Then, he approaches me and looks into my eyes, which is exactly what I want. Before he can say anything more, I press a finger on his lips, reminding him that he should stay quiet. Then, I kiss him in a rush without letting him think.
I find out that the bathroom door has a key. I turn it twice to shut the door completely, to make sure that no-one else can come in. As he notices my mischievous expression, Jarvis blushes. His embarrassment can't be contained, but he needs to let go of his fears.
I'm here just for him. He only needs to follow my lead.
