Chapter Twenty-Seven

For once in my life, it felt like there was nothing eventful happening to me. I had been living in the upstate facility for a week now and followed pretty much the same routine.

Every morning I'd wake up at five and go for a run outside. After that, I'd shower and put some lounging clothes on for the rest of the day. Breakfast usually ended up consisting of an orange or other fruit with a cup of water.

After that I would sit around in my room on the laptop Tony bought me and research. My journal had become less of a place for me writing about my day and more of a place for me to record my research. For hours I'd sit at the desk under my tall bed and just search around on my computer.

There was never a breakthrough though, and the only thing I had written on my 'Profile Page' was my name and birthday. The pages after were filled with some things I thought were true, but ended up getting scribbled out because they weren't true.

Other things I started searching for revolved around my need to get rid of my abilities and trigger words. Doctor Strange was a dead end, so I decided to look into less conventional methods.

A lot of people had a lot of things to say about ways to 'clear your mind' and 'getting rid of the negativity in life.' I tried the meditations and the exercises I found and nothing worked. Of course, I shouldn't be surprised considering I wasn't just looking for a way to clear my mind for yoga or some shit.

I usually skipped lunch with how intense my research was going, and would be forced out of my room by Tony or FRIDAY when I needed dinner. After dinner, I'd go to bed and fight off nightmares through the night.

The routine was good, albeit in need of a little adjustment.

During my researching time, Tony came into my room in a huff. "You sit there literally all day and don't come out unless it's to eat dinner. It's getting exhausting," he said as he walked closer to my desk.

I didn't look up at him in favor of continuing my reading. This made him sigh and he closed my laptop. "Hey! I was reading that," I said, finally looking at him. "Am I the only other person you have to talk to or something?" I asked him.

He shook his head. "No, I've got Rhodey and... I've got Rhodey. What I'm doing here is simply looking out for your health," he said and crossed his arms. I rolled my eyes. "Come on! You need to do stuff other than hide away in your room, typing away on the laptop to find answers that aren't there."

Tony knew about me looking into my past, but not about the other thing. Either way he was right. "I know, but I want to have some hope," I mumbled. "Besides, I can't even leave this place and it's not like there's a lot to do here other than watch TV and train."

We were quiet for a second as I watched Tony bite the inside of his cheek in thought. "You're right, and you know why you can't go out so it's not like I'm Mother Gothel or anything. But we can figure something out."

He didn't give me a chance to argue before grabbing my hand and hauling me out of my chair. We walked down the hall and into the common area. When we got there, I paused slightly and thought back to what happened last year.

We didn't dwell for long. Tony brought me to the ground floor and down another hallway. He opened a door and the smell of chlorine hit my nose. "A pool?" I asked as we both fully entered.

"A pool," Tony stated.

I looked at the gigantic pool, and then back to Tony. "I don't have any swimming gear."

He hummed in thought and then looked at me. "You wanna go into the city and get some? And other things to do while you're up here?" he asked. The question threw me off and I blinked a few times in confusion before he shook his head. "Come here."

Grabbing my hand again, we went back up to the second floor and over to one of his labs. He let go of me once we got inside but continued walking over to a table. I watched as he mumbled to himself and looked around for something, then he let out an 'aha' and grabbed something.

While he walked back over to me, I saw he was holding a simple charm bracelet. "What is this, a 'Best Friends Forever' bracelet or something? You got a matching one?" I asked as he handed it to me so I could look at it.

"Okay, the sarcasm is annoying," he started and I just gave him a sarcastic smile. "And no, it's not just a little charm bracelet. The 'charm' you see here is just an extension of FRIDAY so she can know exactly where you are. Anything happens, double click it and I'll get alerted."

I nodded my head and hesitantly slipped it on. "The last bracelet I wore blocked my abilities, you know," I said.

"And I can promise you that's not what this is," he said back. "You're smart and I can trust that you're smart. As long as you have that on you, you'll be golden."

FRIDAY drove me in one of Tony's less conspicuous cars. To make it easier, Tony said to sit in the passenger seat and act as if I was being chauffeured around. When I needed the car all I had to do was press the bracelet charm once.

Once: Car returns.

Twice: Tony gets an emergency alert.

Hopefully that doesn't get mixed up.

The car stopped and dropped me off outside a shop that looked really expensive, but Tony had also given me his card so I didn't think too much about it. I had my hood pulled over my head and some sunglasses on to try and look as normal as I could.

Not many people knew about my hair color change, so not many people would look out for it, so I was safe-ish for the time being.

In the store, several teenage girls hurried about with their friends. Some talked about how they hoped their boyfriends liked what they bought, others were just happy to find something they thought they looked good in.

I quickly found my way to the swimsuits and looked around. It was hard to hide my surprise at how little some of them looked. My eyes widened comically when I held up a bikini bottom that looked like it was just a couple pieces of string.

"Hi, do you need help finding anything?" I jumped at the voice and looked to my left to see a smiling lady staring at me. Her name badge ready 'Keeley' and it looked like she worked at the store.

"Just trying to find a good swimsuit," I muttered, and went back to my search.

She didn't give up easily, however. "Oh, let me help you!" I quickly found myself being pushed aside a bit as she started searching the racks and shelves. Every now and then she would look back and study me and would either put one back or grab one more. If this was what every shopping experience was like, I'd have to stick with doing it online.

"Okay! Let me bring you to a fitting room and let you try all of these on! If you need anything in a different size or color, let me know and I'll grab it for you!" she said as she led me to a different part of the store. He cheeriness in her voice hurt my head.

We got to some rooms and Keeley all but shoved me into one while also hanging the swimsuits up on a hook. She smiled at me and then shut the door.

I took in a deep breath and recovered from that wonderful experience. The swimsuits were hung up on a hook that said 'Thinking About It' right above. To the left there was a hook that said 'Yes' and on the right a hook that said 'No.'

"By the way, honey," Keeley suddenly said outside the door, giving me a mini-heart attack. "What's your name? I'm gonna write it on the whiteboard on the door so I know who's in here!"

There was a moment of hesitation when I went to say 'Rey.' It wasn't the most common name, but it's not like it was the rarest name in the world either. But I needed something fast otherwise it'd seem to suspicious.

"It's Tiffany!" I called out. That was the first name that popped into my head, and I didn't entirely know why. I haven't read or watched anything with a character named Tiffany. Oh well, it's my new alias.

"Sounds great!" Keeley called back in. She walked away not long after and I finally started trying on swimsuits.

It was a long hour of putting on more and more swimsuits. There were a couple that I nearly got tangled in with how many stings there were, and there was one I almost tore with my metal arm.

At the end of it, out of twenty three swimsuits she had handed me, I was walking out with three. One was a navy blue bikini with white polka dots, another was a red, blue, and yellow striped bikini, and the last one was a black one piece that had a cool twisted thing going on at the top.

"Only three? That's okay, at least you were successful! Why don't you go look at some t-shirts and stuff while I go and put these up there on hold for you?" Keeley offered as soon as I stepped out of the dressing room. She ushered me away to the t-shirts and took care of all the swimsuits.

A few minutes went by and I picked out a couple t-shirts that I thought were cute. I didn't want to try them on so I just went ahead and bought them with the swimsuits.

On my way out of the store, I overheard a group of girls talking about stuff. One girl asked, "Wait, so why do they call out the time of death though? The person died, move on. What's the time of death stuff all about?"

"Oh my gosh, Abby, it's for the death certificate! You know, the government has to keep official records of that kind of stuff. Stop asking all the 'why's and just enjoy the stupid show," another responded.

I stopped in my tracks and a woman almost ran into me. "Death certificates are usually publicly accessible. So are birth certificates. Would I be able to find mine?" I thought as I stood in the store.

When people started staring at me I started moving, clicking the charm once as I did. I would call Tony in the car and ask him about where I could find information like that, wether it be online or in a building.

"Call Tony Stark," I said as soon as I got into the passenger side. "And just drive around for a bit until I figure out where I'm going next."

FRIDAY did just that and suddenly another voice was in the car. "What's up?"

"Birth and death certificates are publicly available, right?" I started.

Brief pause before, "Yeah... what's going through that head of yours?"

I shook my head and fidgeted with my hands. "Do you think there'd be one for me? Birth, death, both? I could maybe figure some stuff out about me," I explained. "I could find parents or siblings or something. After all my research so far I've come up with nothing concrete for me. What if I do with this?"

There was another pause, but this one was longer. "I'm pretty sure you would be able to access it online. The problem is, the certificates are usually at the hospital you were born in or died in. I can get FRIDAY to search around if that'd help?" Tony finally asked.

A smile spread across my face. "Sounds good. I'll do some looking, too. It'll give me more to do." We said our quick goodbyes and hung up. FRIDAY had started to take me back upstate already, so I decided to take a quick nap.
