Chapter Thirteen

When I woke up it was all on my own. I wasn't startled awake by a nightmare, I wasn't forced away by another person- I woke up like a normal person would after taking a nap. It was strange but not unwelcome. It felt really nice to have a peaceful rest for once.

Wanda was correct too, because I felt much better after getting peaceful sleep. Rather than feeling dread and even more tired than when I fell asleep, I felt rejuvenated and ready to take on the day. It was a very cheesy statement but it was the only thing I felt could describe how I currently felt. It was like I had woken up already filled with energy drinks and steroids (which is what Hydra would do if I was particularly out of it after a week of absolutely no sleep).

My peaceful wake up did not last long, which isn't surprising. I had just sat up in bed when someone came bursting through the door. They slammed it open with such a fury that it's a wonder the damn door didn't break off it's hinges. "Jesus!" I yelled out in surprise and looked to see who it was.

Mr. Stark stood there. "We have somewhere to be. Suit up," he said. I nodded, secretly excited to be considered to come, and he closed the door as he stepped out. I sprung out of bed and ran over to the closet where I had put the dress and jacket from Wanda. Quickly, I grabbed them and threw them over to the bed, then stepped out of the closet and closed the door. I stripped off my pajamas and threw the dress on, then slipped the jacked on.

Something was missing. "Shoes!" I called out to myself. Back in the closet, they sat where I had left them, and I grabbed them and the socks I needed with them. The socks took a second to put on, but I got them on and slipped the shoes on too. Finally I felt ready and ran out of the room quickly. I threw the door open and used my mind to will it shut. Agent Lambert was somehow there and followed me as I quickly made my way to the common area room place thing. I still didn't have the path to the hangar memorized so I had to find someone else to take me there.

Wanda sat there in her outfit waiting for me. She turned my way when she heard me running down the hall. "Great, lets go," she said and we ran off to the hangar. I'm pretty sure Agent Lambert followed us the whole way there. Once there I saw everyone else in full gear. There was even someone there that I didn't recognize as someone I had already met. I took in his appearance and quickly figured out it was Thor. He was in full armor and had his legendary hammer tightly gripped in his right hand. He still had yet to notice me, and I couldn't figure out if it was a good thing or bad thing; I had no idea how much information he was given about me or the situation I had put myself in with these people. Hopefully I could maybe talk to him more after this emergency mission.

I turned to look at Wanda and saw Bruce hand her something, say something else, and then walk off towards Mr. Stark. She then put the something on/in her ear and turned over to me. "Are you ready?" she asked. I nodded and the two of us walked into the jet and sat over on the sides away from people. Sam came over and sat next us.

"How you feeling Rey?" he asked me. I shrugged and looked at my hands. I saw that i had forgotten my gloves back in my room during my rush to get dressed; they must've come off when I took my top off.

"I don't really know. It isn't my first mission but it is at the same time? I don't really know how to describe it," I said. The giant door to the jet closed and I noticed everyone was inside, and the only people not in their 'battle armor' were Bruce and Mr. Stark. Everyone else was dressed and armed heavily. Whatever we were flying into, they weren't ready for the amount of fire power.

Captain Rogers walked over to me and held out a pair of handcuffs. Wanda looked at them and scoffed. "Really Steve? She's on our side and won't try anything," she said. Something in her tone almost sounded like disappointment. "These restraints aren't necessary."

The jet lifted and started to move as Captain Rogers said, "It's just a precaution." That's all he said even though I could tell there was more he wanted to say. Probably things like "She's a monster" and "She could kill us all if I don't do it". I voluntarily held out my wrists and he cuffed them together. "I won't do ankle restraints if that means anything to you," he said to Wanda then walked off.

"I can't believe he's still making you do this," Wanda mumbled. Sam also looked pretty pissed from beside me. I knew he and Captain Rogers were friends so I didn't expect him to jump right to my aid. He did still mumble his agreement to Wanda's statement.

That's when Thor decided to walk over here to out little spot on the jet. He looked at me confused and looked at the restraints. "Who is this and why is she restrained?" he asked anyone in the jet who wanted to answer. Nat stood up from her seat across the way and came over.

"This is Reyna-Rose, or Rey. She's a sort of pending recruit. As for the restraints, that's more on the paranoia coming from one Steve Rogers," she said. Captain Rogers looked over at us and didn't appreciate being called out like that, but made no comments.

Thor nodded and gave me a sort of smile I think it was? "Nice to meet you Rey. I am Thor, son of Odin and the God of Thunder," he said. Even though I knew who he was, I liked the introduction.

I mumbled a little 'hi' and looked down at my feet. The God was intimidating to say the least, so I wasn't exactly jumping up and down and staring into his soul.

He and Nat walked off to talk with Captain Rogers and that's when Bruce came over. He was rubbing his hands together and messing with them, and I realized he was extremely nervous that he'd have to Hulk-out during this mission. He stopped right in front of me and shoved his hands in his pockets to stop messing with them. "Hey guys can I talk with Rey alone for a minute?" he asked Wanda and Sam. The two of them didn't even hesitate to agree and get up to give us as much privacy as they could on the jet. Out of the corner of my eye, I could see Captain Rogers looking over here suspiciously.

"Hey," Bruce said as he sat next to me, the side closest to Captain Rogers to sort of shield me in a way. I looked at him and gave him all of my focus. "So I asked Wanda to wear this device on the side of her head so I could track her brain activity as she used her powers. Of course I simply told her it was to check up on how she was, which is partially true, but I haven't told anyone about our conversation yet." I nodded in response.

"Will I be able to tell her at some point? I don't want to leave one of the only people who gave me a chance out of the loop, as Americans say," I asked him.

Bruce nodded and started to pull a small case out of his pocket. "You can once this whole thing with your powers gets confirmed. I really don't want people freaking out anymore, and doubt you want that either." I agreed with him on that part. "So here's your own device," he said and opened the box. Inside was a little device thing that looked like the thing he gave Wanda. Bruce went to hand it to me, and then saw my restrained hands. "Oh sorry! I can put it on really quick," he said and quickly put the device on. Part of it stuck to my head and there was another part that wrapped around my ear for security. "There. And if anyone asks, just tell them something basic like 'Doctor Banner wants to see how my powers look'. It's sort of the truth."

"Thank you," I said quietly and Bruce gave me a small smile, then got up and walked away. Wanda came back over and I could see Captain Rogers going over to ask Bruce about our interaction.

Wanda came and sat where she previously had been. "Hey, you got one too," she said referencing the device on the side of my head, and that was all she mentioned about it. In her head I was probably wearing it for the exact same reason she was wearing hers, and I wasn't about to change that; it's technically not lying if they never ask, right?

"Do you want me to braid your hair so it can stay out of the way while we fight?" she asked me. I didn't even think about that part, and nodded. Wanda had me turn sideways more so she could have good access to my hair and started to braid it. I had no idea what she was doing, but it wasn't that bad. There were a few harsh tugs at the beginning of the process but then they stopped and she was simply going about fixing my hair.

My head wondered about and I thought about my nightmare more. It certainly wasn't the first one I had of the Winter Soldier, but the last nightmare I had about him was two months after I fought him and that was years ago at this point. Why are they resurfacing now? I didn't have theories and couldn't really conjure any up at this point. As far as I knew, the Winter Soldier had gone awol after a mission with Captain America...

Now I wanted to ask him about the Winter Soldier and what had happened. As far as I knew Captain Rogers was the last person to see the Soldier before he disappeared and just fell off the grid. That's why I was brought up to the obscure base in Canada: because they were worried I would go awol with him. They couldn't lose two of the deadliest weapons in their grasp in such a short time period especially, because then they'd be an easy target for world governments and the Avengers. I started to remember the scene.

"Soldat," the agent said as he walked in the cell. I stood from the floor and did the Hydra salute. "At ease," he said next, and my arms went to my side. I stood awaiting orders for my next mission. Instead, the agent stepped towards me and held out handcuffs. Like I normally did, I held out my hands, but I didn't think I'd be going back to the lab again, as I had only just got back a few days ago.

I looked at the agent in confusion. "Sir?" I asked. He finished with the handcuffs and led me out of my cell. He still had yet to tell me where I was going. Usually they would tell me if I was due back at the lab, if I was going to train, if I had a mission, or if I had to fight. This silence was new and I could feel confusion induced panic rise in my chest. "Am I allowed to know where I am going?"

The agent didn't speak, but another person did ahead of us. "You are being relocated Soldat, for your protection." Bullshit. They never did anything for my protection. "One of the assets has escaped and to protect you, our most valuable weapon, you need to move." I saw that it was one of the smaller Directors who had been telling me all this. Something was very wrong if he was out here and walking me away as well. Reading between the lines, the Winter Soldier must've escaped or been captured. Based on his abilities, the former was much mor likely. It was obvious that he was the one they were talking about; he had always been their most valuable weapon, not me. This also meant they had very little hope in getting him back. I was the leader of the trainees now. I was their first option for missions now. I didn't know if I like this or not.

"Where are we going?" I asked. In the midst of my confusion I forgot about Hydra's thing with too many questions. Luckily the agent and the Director were there to remind me.

"It is not nor will ever be your place to question us. Understand?" the Director asked. It made no sense for him to ask if he knew the answer he would get.

"Yes sir."

I was shaken from my thoughts by Wanda snapping by my face. "Rey?" she asked, looking at my spaced out expression. I shook my head and cleared the memories away. Wanda smiled and said, "I finished your hair and we are about to go over our battle plan."

"I'm ready," I said, and we stood from the seats and stood around a table. I assumed this is where all strategy planing took place when they left the base without time to really make one. This felt weird though, because I was included in it. Wanda squeezed my arm as we stood around the edge of the table and got ready to listen to Captain Rogers.

"Alright everyone, here's what we got. This is a Hydra base that's been operating deep under the radar and it's surprising to see how long they've gotten away with it. It's a huge base which is why everyone was needed for the mission. There's bound to be a hell of a lot of agents there which means we will need a lot of man power. Stark, Falcon, and Thor will attack from the skies. Romanoff, Maximoff, Barton, and I will attack from the ground. Those in the sky need to find weak points to get inside, then alert Stark so he can go in and gather files and information, and possibly any weapons they've been hiding.

"Banner and...Silva will remain in the jet as back up, and only call for them if you absolutely need to, got it?" I took note of the hesitation he had when trying to find a name to call me, and it didn't surprise me that he didn't call me Rey or any of my first names. The jet started to land and I could feel the floor sloping. Everyone else must be more used to it than I am, because they all walked about getting all the gear they needed to go out onto the field. I had to grab onto and lean against something to stop from tumbling.

Wanda came over to me and gave my right shoulder and squeeze. "It's going to be okay Rey. I don't know whether or not I should be sorry you can't join in on the action, but I bet Banner will keep you company. You'll be alright," she said. I smiled at her. Wanda pulled me in for a small hug and then got ready to exit the jet.

The jet was being landed away from the base so we wouldn't be detected and hopefully no agents would get this far back and attack us here. The worst thing would be if an agent got into the jet and flew it to any Avengers base or facility.

As soon as the door was open enough, everyone piled out and went off flying or running to their destinations. Bruce then walked over and pressed the button to close it up. I decided to sit down and realized that my hands were still cuffed. "Well that's rude," I mumbled as I looked at them.

"Can you use your powers to unlock them?" Bruce asked. I remembered that that is what I did the last time I was left restrained in the jet. He watch me with wonder as I closed my eyes and orange wisps appeared and worked their way into the key spot of the handcuffs and started to unlock them. Both wrist things opened up and they fell to the floor. I opened my eyes back up and moved my arms around to experience the freedom of them not being close together. "That's really interesting. So you can do a lot with your powers it seems," Bruce noted.

I nodded and picked up the handcuffs. "I guess. However I do not really like to call them powers, I just do for lack of a better word. Abilities is good too but I just don't think of it very often," I said. "But yeah I guess I can do a lot with them. At this point I don't really know much of the limitations other than the fact that I know I can't just create anything out of thin air."

"How much have you experimented with your powers?" Bruce asked me next. I stood up and placed the handcuffs on a table and looked at Bruce who had been sitting in the co-pilot seat.

"I experimented against my will a lot with Hydra I guess. They wanted to know what they could exploit me for, and there were a lot of things I could do. I can lift things, use the magic, for lack of a better word, to do things without needing to move my hands around much, I can look into people's minds if I try hard enough but I haven't gotten very strong in that category, and they even made me try to crush the insides of a man." There was a pause and I could tell Bruce wanted to ask if I was successful or not. "I did it, and it was the worst thing I had ever done and I vowed to myself never to do it again."

The silence came back after I spoke and I went to sit down. "I'm sorry you had to go through all of that Rey," he said suddenly, surprising me slightly. I showed him a tight lipped smile and sat all the way down. "So I don't entirely know how I'm going to be able to track how you use your powers in a fight if you're stuck in the jet with me." I laughed and leaned my head back.

"You make a fair point doctor," I said and just stared at the ceiling above me. "I guess we can figure something else out, like you can do it during a future training session if I ever get a chance to fight with my powers." Bruce hummed in thought and I looked over to see him looking at a tablet thing. "Whatcha looking at?" I asked.

Bruce looked up and motioned for me to come over. He spoke as I got up and walked over. "This tablet is tracking Wanda's brain activity. It is live time and storing all of the information in the hard drive. That way I can keep everything and look at it later in the lab," he explained. I got over to him and looked at the tablet over his shoulder, nodding along to everything. He pointed out a blank spot underneath Wanda's brain activity and said, "This is where yours was supposed to show up. I haven't activated it yet though because I didn't want to collect activity from you just sitting in here."

"That's fair," I mumbled and watched Wanda's brain activity spike and light up and move around. There was nothing in my head that helped me understand what I was looking at, but I knew Bruce understood it all and that's what mattered.

"It looks like she's using-" a loud staccato bang on the side of the jet surprised both of us into silence. At first I had the smallest amount of hope begging that was just part of our imaginations, but instead more bangs followed. Gun shots.

"Shit," I mumbled and grabbed an earpiece from where I saw Wanda grab one. There were a couple left so I put on one and gave the other to Bruce. "Stay here and stay hidden. I don't want you to Hulk-out and for that to happen you need to stay in a safe spot. I'm going out there to get rid of the agents and then once they're all gone I'm coming back in to stay in here," I said.

In his head, Bruce remarked how the girl in front of him had that leadership persona surrounding her while she spoke. It reminded him of the Steve when he was in Captain America mode.

In my head, my authoritative tone reminded me of the Soldier Hydra wanted me to be; the one who gave out orders to their team and was unforgiving just like all of Hydra. The thought made my skin crawl but I didn't have time to dwell on it because now we were being attacked with things that caused the entire jet to rock a bit. "Bruce, hide now! I'm going to open the door and jump out, then use my mind to try and close it back up." I walked to the panel and grabbed a gun along the way in case I needed it.

I took in a deep breath and pressed the button. With my mind I pushed everyone back and away from the jet so I could get out safely and close the door. My feet were up and running in a instant and I vaulted out of the jet, and was met with a large crowd of Hydra agents. The fight started the moment they saw me.

They pretty much all had guns, so I kept up a sort of forcefield around me and used magic to also lift them up and throw them into trees. If I weren't in the middle of a fight, I'd laugh at some of them hanging from branches, but I was in a fight so I had to pay attention to the other agents who weren't quite incapacitated yet. One agent in front of me got the idea to just start wildly shooting a machine gun at me, which was (for obvious reasons) distracting, so I got the gun from his hands with some magic wisps and threw it at a tree while also trying to hold some other agents off with a sort of giant disk of magic. I let out a yell and pushed all the agents away from me. I had a minute to breathe and realized that the door to the jet didn't close.

"Shit, Bruce!" I yelled out. "Find a way to safely close the door!" I couldn't see or hear a response because a random agent managed to tackle me from behind and I let out a screech in surprise. The agent was trying to hold onto my hands with one hand and I realized he must've had a knife so I just released a pulse of magic to throw him off me, then turned around quickly to throw him against a tree. Another agent charged at me and I flung him over my head and away from the jet.

The communications device in my ear was still there, turned off and waiting. I tried to multitask by fiddling around with it and also getting rid of the agents but I had no idea how the stupid piece of junk worked.

The gun I had previously gotten had been long forgotten and was laying on the ground a few feet away. I ran over and picked it up quickly, then shot a few agents. The gun was merely to make more noise at this point, because I needed someone to realize that there was a fight going on over here and Bruce was completely on his own basically. A few agents charged at me together and I made a force field around myself and let them all run into it and pass out. I brought it down and came face to face with another agent.

I punched him hard in the nose and then kicked his stomach to send him flying away. As I was doing this, another agent came running up and grabbed my right arm with a death grip. I started to open my hand up to use some magic stuff to get him away, but he clamped a bracelet on my wrist and I suddenly felt empty, and like some part of me was taken away. My left hand went to break off the bracelet but was instead magnetized to it and I felt more of myself being taken away. I tried using all my strength to pull my metal arm away and was met with a swift jab to my metal bicep. Normally I could shake it off, but the metal rod that stabbed me hit in the perfect spot that caused my arm to lose control and spaz out.

I gasped at this weird feeling and looked at at the agent. I couldn't see his face which causes me even more panic. "Bruce go!" I screamed out and I turned my head briefly to look at the jet where I saw agents starting to swarm it. "Go!" I screamed once more. The agent then grabbed my neck and started squeezing.

I fought him with all I could. Without my arm and without my abilities, my legs were my only hope and trying to get free. There was no thought and I just flailed my legs around, kicking what I touched, and tried to at one point get up to his head but he held me at an awkward enough angle that I just couldn't reach. My vision grew spotty and it took so much out of me to try and keep fighting.

"Fight! Fight like your life depends on it!" A memory of someone screaming that surfaced into my head and I tried so hard to follow that advice. I tried so hard to fight with every last bit of life I had left in me. Instead of it working, my vision faded and I couldn't feel anymore. The last thing my senses grabbed was a loud and very angry roar.

~~

"Stark! Do you have what we need?" Captain America yelled into the earpiece as he threw his shield at a sniper in a tree.

"Got it," Iron Man responded, and he flew from the building and landed near the spot most of the fighting was taking place to get rid of the last few Hydra agents. "We need to get a move on."

There was a loud sound above them, and they all looked up to see what it was. In the sky, flying away erratically, was the jet they had all arrived in. Iron Man blasted the last agent in the area and muttered, "Shit."

Wanda when she saw the jet flung the last agent near her away and got worried. "Rey," she whispered and ran to where they had left Rey, Bruce, and the jet. "Did you guys see the jet fly away?" she asked into her comms. As she ran back she saw some fellow teammates running as well.

"Yeah. I just hope we don't have an incapacitated Bruce," Iron Man said.

Wanda sighed and almost rolled her eyes at that statement. "Stark, you don't know what the hell happened. We just need to get back there and assess the damage, alright?" Nat asked. There was a small agreement from the other end and then no one spoke over the comms.

It felt like she was running for forever when Wanda finally got to the landing site, with others appearing not long after. She looked around wildly to find anything, and saw a figure laying on the ground wearing a red jacket and black dress. "Rey!" Wanda yelled and sprinted over to the unconscious girl. She covered the distance between them quickly and fell to her knees once she reached Rey. "Oh my god Rey," she whispered as she panicked. Wanda turned Rey to her back and quickly jumped back to get out of the way of Rey's malfunctioning arm. "I need some help!" Wanda called out while trying to find a spot to sit next to Rey and not get a metal elbow to the gut. It was hard to see Rey in this state.

Tony had now stepped out of the suit and had something in his hands as he hurried over to Wanda and Rey. "Here," he said and placed a small device onto Rey's bicep. He pressed a button and her arm stopped moving and went straight and stiff. "I can't say this in many ways other than to be blunt...I made the device to 'freeze' her arm in a sense if we ever needed to," he explained, and rubbed the back of his neck with some guilt on his face. Wanda didn't comment, telling herself that this device, no matter the circumstance it was made in, was extremely helpful.

Rey was now still with only her chest moving up and down, which made Wanda feel relieved that Rey was in fact still alive. Wanda got close to Rey again and sat with her legs crossed in front of her, then propped Rey's head up into her lap. The others started to walk around and talk about how everyone was supposed to get home now. Natasha walked up and sat next to Wanda and Rey.

Wanda looked up at Nat. "Part of me wants to look in her head to see if I can access her memories...to see what happened out here..." Wanda sighed and looked back down to Rey. "But I don't think she'd ever forgive me if I invaded her privacy like that." Wanda sighed and looked back up to Nat. "She has to wake up soon, right? I can just ask her then."

She wouldn't say it out loud yet, but to Wanda, Rey was like a sister. After Pietro was killed, Wanda missed having a sibling relationship with someone. Nobody in the Avengers could really fill that spot for her. But once she met Rey and saw how broken she was from Hydra, there was just something in Wanda that made her feel like a sister again.

There was a silence between the two of them as they ensure Rey wasn't too damaged physically. That's when Wanda saw the bracelet on Rey's wrists, the bruising around her neck (possibly from being choked), and Nat spotted the hole in Rey's arm. "Stark! Get you and FRIDAY over here!" Nat called over. The man in question got something from his suit that looked like really skinny glasses and walked over to the women.

"What do you need?" he asked and squatted down. He mumbled to himself, "My old knees cannot do this anymore." Wanda heard and had to suppress a laugh to stay on topic.

Nat pointed out the hole in the metal and the bracelet. "These two things are highly suspicious. We want FRIDAY to do a scan and see is she can tell us anything about either thing," Nat explained.

Tony nodded and tapped on the side of the glasses. "Alright FRIDAY, show me what you got on the bracelet thing here." There was a brief pause where different things on the glasses were scrolling around.

"It's Hydra made. It was made for the purpose of blocking out enhanced individuals' enhancements. There are chemicals and technology that I've never seen combined before that have cause Reyna-Rose's enhancements to be blocked entirely."

"The bruising on her neck?"

"Looks like an attempt at suffocating her. The person who attempted this only succeeded in making her lose consciousness before another force intervened."

"And the hole in her arm?"

"A stab wound. The spot that was impaled has some important wires and boards, meaning the person knew that if she was stabbed there that her metal arm would lose connection to her brain and malfunction."

Nat sighed. "That explains why her arm was spazzing out so bad and why she is like this. If her powers were blocked then something bad must've happened..." Nat trailed off and went to her thoughts. Tony looked around and tried to think of something. He had already contacted Agent Hill back at the tower to fly over another jet to pick them up. At first Hill was amused, but when the situation was explained further, Hill went dead serious and quickly got into a jet and flew to the coordinates Tony had sent her.

Now the Avengers had to sit and wait for the jet with an unconscious Rey, a missing Hulk, and exhausted teammates. Rey had yet to wake up and it was starting to worry Wanda. She had no experience in this field, as no one has ever tried to strangle her before. None of the Avengers really did.

It felt like hours later (even though it was only minutes) when Rey finally woke up. Wanda was still holding her when she shifted slightly, which got Wanda's attention, then her eyes flew open and she sat up quickly while gasping.

"Rey!" Wanda called out, placing a hand on her shoulder. Rey was still panicking and was trying to do something to defend herself, but couldn't get anything to work. "Rey, you are safe. It's me, it's Wanda."
