Outside Opportunities

Rylee's POV

"Surprise, surprise, you useless pieces of filth!" Dr. Powers jeered from the middle of the Camp. "Today's Outside Opportunities announcement day! You get five more minutes of lunch break! Come get your food!"

"Yes!" Julie smiled as we hauled out pots of Glop to the dining area, giving them to a Moderate worker. "I hope Kevin's plan worked," she smiled.

"I guess we'll see," I said as the camp Director stepped up to a crude wooden podium.

"Okay, time for the announcement of the list!"

The Lowlies cheered loudly, I could tell that Outside Opportunities meant a lot to them.

"Julie Zedd!" Dr. Powers yelled, and I cheered, patting Julie on the back as she happily skipped up to the podium. Kevin's plan was working!

"Cameron Walters!"

Applause echoed from a table in the corner as a boy who looked about a year older than me walked up beside Julie, a grin plastered on his face.

"April Spring!"

"Yay! April!" Julie yelled from the front, high-fiving her as she arrived.

"Roland Earl!"

"Whoo! Roland!" Steve, Kevin, Rick, and Indie cheered boisterously as their friend ran up beside Dr. Powers.

"Rylee Stone!"

"Yes!" I gave Kevin a nod of gratitude and went up to stand beside my friends.

"And finally, last but not least, Deanna Olson!"

"Yay! Dee!" I gave her a thumbs up as she rose from her seat, yet she returned it with a deathly glare. She walked up silently, her hands clenched into fists at her sides, in total contrast to the excited steps of the other Lowlies chosen for Outside Opportunities.

What was wrong?

"Congratulations to this month's six Outside Opportunities participants," Dr. Powers smiled. "You will go about the rest of today's activities normally, but you'll meet me in front of my building tomorrow."

"Yes! We're gonna be outta here!" I high fived my friends.

"In a body bag," Dee hissed.

"What do you mean?" April gasped.

"I was going to wait until you got used to camp life to tell you this, but since you got selected this month, I have no choice."

"What is it?" Julie asked.

"Outside Opportunities isn't escape, it's a death sentence."

"Kevin tricked us!" I flared my nostrils with rage.

"No, Kevin was genuinely trying to help you guys," said Dee. "He doesn't know. Only I do. I didn't tell anyone when I found out, not even David. The government of Trumperica gives Lowly Camps minimal funds, and by minimal, I mean minimal. There's just no possible way they can afford to feed all the millions of Lowlies in Trumperica."

"So...? What does that have to do with Outside Opportunities?"

"Since the Trumpists are too...er..important and amazing, to spare even a small percentage of their budget for us," she gestured to her Cardex, "they came up with a repulsive plan to get us all fed. Outside Opportunities. What do you think the little chunks of meat in the Glop you ate for breakfast today are?"

"Um...horse?" April raised an eyebrow.

"No!" Dee hissed. "They're last month's Outside Opportunities kids!"

"Are you serious?" I felt like throwing up as I recalled stirring the pieces of brownish meat into the Glop, and then eating it.

I cooked human. I ate human. I'm a cannibal. We're all cannibals.

"We have to escape, Rylee," Dee said. "Tonight."

"Word 'escape' detected. Alert sent. Noted," droned Dee's Cardex.

"Crap!" Dee stomped her foot. "Never mind that. We're escaping now. Go to your dorm and grab your stuff. I'll go tell David. Meet me by the entrance."

"What?" I gasped.

"Yeah!" Dee yelled. "My Cardex just alerted the Moderates. They know we know! They'll be here in minutes!"

"Okay, we're going!" Julie, April and I took off as fast as we could towards Dorm 3Z, disappearing into the building just as a very angry Dr. Powers turned the corner into the dining area, followed by a cluster of TG's.

This is worse than the Hunger Games, I thought as my friends and I ran up the stairs to our room.

The people of Panem are just forced to kill each other. We're forced to EAT each other...without even knowing it!

"What should we take?" Julie asked, looking through her meager possessions.

"I don't know, just grab something!" I yelled, pointing to the TG's below us. "They're coming!"

We each stuffed a change of clothes and a few half full water bottles into makeshift bags folded from our coarse bedding. I saw a bag of instant Glop mix on my bed that I usually kept there for an afternoon snack, and mentally debated taking it. We didn't know how long the journey to OTD would be, and how long it would be before we had food again...

No, I'd rather starve than eat that stuff ever again.

"Open up!" I heard Dr. Powers' voice and a sharp rap on the door. "Open up, or you'll regret it!"

"Never!" I yelled, shoving my bed against the door and yanking off the remaining sheets.

I twisted them together, tying them into a crude rope.

"For America!" I screamed, knotting my rope to a bedpost and leaping out of the window, the other end of the rope clutched firmly in my hands.

I felt the rope snap and groan under the pressure as it caught me, inches from the ground. As soon as I saw April and Julie begin to climb down the rope, I ran for the entrance to meet Dee.

"Hey! That's one of them!" A TG hollered. I heard frantic footsteps behind me as a group of at least six Trumpist Guards began their pursuit.

Almost there, I gritted my teeth as I wove through groups of alarmed Lowlies in an effort to lose the TG's. My lungs hurt terribly from all the running and my ankle felt like it was on fire. I had probably sprained it in my fall.

Finally, I saw Dee and David near the entrance, in the process of scaling the gate.

Slowing down, I clutched my swollen ankle and looked up at the gate that loomed above me. It would be hard to climb without an injury and a bunch of TG's on my trail.

"Rylee, are you okay?" Julie and April gave me a worried look as they caught up to us.

"It doesn't matter now. Get up there!"

April didn't need to be told twice. She climbed up the metal framework of the gate, joining David and Dee on the other side.

"What about you?" Julie looked back with concern.

"I can't," I gestured to my ankle, which was beginning to turn purple. "Go! There's no time!"

"No," she put her hands on her hips, watching as April, David, and Dee went off into the distance. "The moment we leave a fellow human being behind, we've let Trump win. He wants to go back to our primitive past. He wants it to be every man for himself. He doesn't understand things like love, empathy, and friendship, so he wants to shut them down. He wants to kill our humanity, but humanity doesn't go down without a fight."

Looking straight into my eyes, her hands on her hips, Julie uttered the two best words in the universe. Words that had been locked up inside us for two years. Words that we were all dying to say.

"Trump. Dump." She laughed crazily as her Cardex wailed, and I smiled.

I whipped around to see the TG's circling us. Feeling numbness in my left arm, I looked down at it with horror to see a tranquilizer dart sticking out of my forearm.

"Let's dump Trump," I muttered as the world faded to black.

A/N: That was a nice, long chapter. Hope you liked it! Please comment your thoughts, and don't forget to vote. Our sincere thanks to epicRedHot for the cannibalism idea. It's totally within Trump's moral boundaries...if he even has those...and it's an awesome addition to the story!

Listen to Rylee! #letsdumptrump
