Last Mission

A/N: I apologize in advance, TheWatermelonTroll. You go through some pretty rough stuff in this chapter...

Rylee's POV

Random scenes from various times in my life flashed through my head as I drifted aimlessly through a drug-induced reverie, lying helpless on a hospital bed.

My mom sent me off proudly on my first day of middle school.

Maddie and I both made the All-Region choir in seventh grade.

Maddie, April, Julie, and I laughed when Trump announced his campaign for President. None of us believed he'd ever get elected.

I hissed with surprise as cold water splashed on my face and into my mouth, slightly clearing my hazy vision.

"Come on, Ry, we gotta go," I looked up to see April standing over my bed with Julie a few yards behind her.

"I c-cannn't," I slurred, shocked at how hard it was even to think. They must've put me on a lot more sedatives than I had originally thought.

"We didn't risk our lives sneaking into Trump City for nothing," Julie frowned. "You have to come with us! Leona Summers is trying to take over the country! Her inauguration is in less than an hour, and unless we stop her, she'll become dictator!"

"B-buttt I killled Truuuump," I protested, rolling over so that I was facing away from them. "I neeed to rrressst now."

"You didn't kill him," April said. "You just shot him in the arm. He's in Summers' custody now, and, at least according to the news, she's having him executed next week."

"This is OTD's last mission, Rylee," Julie stated. "And we need our Eagle to complete it." I groaned in protest as more freezing liquid hit my face and the thin blankets were suddenly yanked away from me.

I bit my lip as the blanket went over my left leg, sending a wave of agony through my hip and up my spine.

"Oh dear..." Julie gasped, staring at it.

"Is it bad?" I asked, my brain beginning to wake up.

"No wonder you're being this troublesome," she gaped. "You shouldn't be getting out of bed with a wound like that, much less doing what we're going to need you to do."

"I know, but we have no choice," April tapped her foot impatiently. "Time is running out. That Summers woman knows what she's doing, she put you as far from Maddie and the White House as possible without having to send you out of Trump City. She really thought of everything."

"Maddie!" I slowly sat up, careful not to put too much pressure on my leg. "Is she alright?"

"Oh, she's more than alright," Julie's eyes darkened. "She betrayed us. She's working with Leona Summers."

"Just like I said she would," April smirked.

"What..." I trailed off, shaking my head in disbelief. There was no way that was true.

Maddie Udana, my best friend. Maddie Udana, the one I trusted the most...

"If you don't believe us, just look at this," April pulled her phone out of her pocket with a flourish, toggling to her camera roll and opening her most recently saved video. "I found this on Yahoo News about an hour ago. Check it out," she gave the screen a hateful look before pressing play.

Maddie stood in front of a glowing, modern building that I recognized from TV as the Head Trumpist's mansion. She wore a purple dress with long sleeves that cleverly disguised the cast on her left arm and was flanked by two fully armed TG's.

She looked like the perfect Trumpist official...complete with the arrogant, all-knowing smirk.

A third TG entered the room, looking breathless, as if he'd been running for a while.

"Trumpist Udana, Head Trumpist Summers wished for me to inform you that Operation Trump Dump's Eagle, Rylee Stone, is in our custody. What are your orders?"

"Does the Head Trumpist have no plans for this situation?" Maddie asked coldly.

"No, Trumpist Udana. She specifically told us that you were to handle the Eagle."

"Very well then," Maddie sighed, still as haughty and emotionless as could be. "Is she in a hospital?"

"Yes, Trumpist Udana."

"Good. I want TG's stationed outside her room, and surrounding the building. Tell them they have strict orders to shoot any suspicious individuals leaving the property...that includes Rylee."

"Of course, Trumpist Udana," the TG gave Maddie a tired nod. "I will inform my unit."

"That isn't her," I gritted my teeth furiously, forgetting about my injured leg for a moment as I slid off the bed with determination, nearly falling over from the jolt of pain. Julie and April got on either side of me, steadying me so that I wouldn't have to put any weight on my left leg.

"I know it's hard to believe, but Leona Summers is as manipulative as they come," April spat as I slowly began to walk forward, using my friends as human crutches. "I'm honestly not surprised that she got Maddie to side with her. I mean, they have a lot in common. They're both crazy smart and sophisticated."

"But there's one major difference," I stopped a few inches from a window. "Maddie isn't an evil psychopath who wants to take over the world!"

"Guys, we shouldn't be arguing right now. We need to get through that," Julie pointed to the line of TG's outside the window. Luckily, their backs were turned to us, but their hands were on their guns, ready to pull them out at the slightest notice.

"There's a gap," April whispered, pointing to a gaping hole between the first line of TG's and the second. To my delight, it was only a few feet to the left of the window. "We need to get out of here without being spotted by the TG's or we're dead. Our only chance is to use these bushes for cover."

"But what do we do when we reach the end of the hedge?" Julie raised an eyebrow.

"We run for our freaking lives."

"That doesn't sound like a very good plan to me, especially with this," I gestured to my leg.

"Do you have a better one?" April placed her hands on her hips.

"Uh...no," I grimaced.

"That's what I thought. Let's go." Slowly and deliberately, she began to push the window up. We held our breath as it rose, wincing at every tiny squeak. Each second, I expected a TG to whip around and start firing in our face, but April managed to somehow, miraculously get the window halfway open with no trouble.

Hoisting herself up, she slid under the window on her belly, landing with catlike grace in the grass below. Julie followed her lead, and a couple of seconds later, both of my friends were crouching in the bushes beneath me.

Steeling myself, I brought my good leg up to the windowsill. My left leg burned and tears welled up in my eyes as I balanced my body, lying awkwardly on my stomach half inside and half out. I squirmed desperately, coming to the sudden realization that if a TG happened to look behind him while I was in this position, I would have no way to hide myself.

I bit down on the inside of my cheek to keep myself from screaming out in pain as my bandaged leg scraped over the sharp edge of the sill, sending me tumbling headfirst into the grass.

Shakily, I sat up, bringing both of my legs up in front of me. My friends and I cringed at the sight of the bright, sticky crimson that seeped through the fresh gauze. My leg was bleeding again.

"She can't do this, don't you see that she's losing too much blood?!" Julie hissed.

"She has to," April said firmly. "If she stays here any longer, the Trumpists are going to have her tortured and killed. I think Mad- excuse me- Trumpist Udana was pretty clear about that."

"April's right," I said weakly. "I don't think Maddie's the enemy here, but for some reason, she said what she said, and she meant it. I'm the Eagle, I'm literally the face of OTD. And we've all read enough books and watched enough movies to know what dystopian governments do to important rebels."

Julie nodded slowly, a worried look in her eye, as April gestured for us to follow her. I crawled through the grass behind Julie, pushing myself forward with my right leg while letting my left drag uselessly across the ground, leaving a sinuous trail of blood behind me.

"It's Mr. Olson!" April pointed to a noisy, brown helicopter that began to descend onto the hospital lawn. We high-fived each other as the doors flew open and David and Dee hopped out, wielding machine guns. Taking the TG's completely by surprise, the Olson twins began gunning them down like bowling pins.

"Come on!" Julie grinned, motioning for April to stand up. They looped my arms around their shoulders before half carrying me to the helicopter, cautiously staying out of the small battle that raged outside the hospital.

"Let's get you guys outta here," Dee grinned, helping me up into the helicopter. April, Julie, and David hopped in through the other door and Mr. Olson took off at lightning speed, barely escaping the hordes of advancing TG's.

"Oh my gosh, Rylee," Dee's face turned pale as her eyes drifted to my leg. "What on Earth happened to you?"

"I fell off Trump Tower," I barely managed to croak, slumping forward in my seat.

"Rylee! Stay with us, Rylee!" Julie pleaded, grabbing my clammy hands.

I heard snippets of frantic conversation as my vision began to go dark.

"Blood loss..."

"Too much..."

"Get her away..."

And then, I was out cold.
