Chapter 9: Dating 101

As soon as Megan saw Conner coming down the steps, she gave a quiet sigh towards him. She loved that he did anything he could, to support his friends. She only wished that she could have enough courage to tell him that to his face. Ever so  much, she wished that she was brave and determined enough to tell the guy she liked, about her crazy crushing habits. Stealing a look at Artemis in Wally's arms, who were both smiling and laughing, Megan wanted that kind of relationship to be for her and Conner. Finally, she saw Artemis pull away, and say, pointing towards the back of the building, "We should go find some seats. I think I see some back there." She led the way, with Zee and Robin staying further back, discussing something obviously funny, because they both burst into laughter along the way. Megan looked back, and saw Conner walking silently to the section of seats, completely staring ahead with no glance her way. Shutting her eyes, she prayed again that she'd have the chance to say something without getting flustered and embarrassed. As they arrived at the tables, Megan watched Conner take his seat on the left, and seeing no other spots open, she took the one on the right. Robin walked by, and said, "Hey Con, you know Miss M. here likes dogs. Why don't you tell her about Wolf?" The smaller kid walked away, grinning like the Cheshire cat, and leaving Megan trying to think of away to hide the bright, slightly hot blush on her cheeks. She noticed, however, that Conner sent Robin a death glare of sorts, then turned his attention to her. He said simply, "So, I guess you like dogs, thanks to Robin's non-silent advice. That's cool." Megan nodded silently, but didn't say anything. She felt so nervous, that she felt everything was already wrong. She was so going to pay back Robin for dropping the bomb on Conner about her likes, when she got back to school in a few weeks, after spring break and the dance. Conner continued, "What kinds of dogs do you like?" Megan replied softly, "I-um... I think all dogs are cool. What breed is Wolf?" Conner gave a small grin, then it faded as fast as it had come. He said, "Wolf's a hybrid between a Snow Wolf and a German Shepherd, and is as loyal as they come." Megan asked, "How did you get him?""Well, it was kind of interesting when I found him. I found Wolf, as I was walking home from school one day in the rain. I heard him howling at the rain, and took pity, when I saw exposed muscles, from possible abuse, on the interior of his legs. My dad isn't always really around much, so he and I kind of have a strained relationship, and when he saw Wolf, he freaked out. He didn't want anything to do with me, or Wolf, and I was fine externally with that. I had and still have Wolf. He's what keeps me from going insane and getting mad at my dad for his treatment of me." Megan thought for a moment, trying to piece everything together. She had no idea that the crush she had, the school's star quarterback, had problems with his image and his father. It hurt the ginger to see the guy she liked, say that his father never really seemed to care. Looking into Conner's eyes, without much thought, Megan said sincerely, "I kinda know how that feels. My brothers and sisters used to say things that made me wonder if I had purpose. I came here, to Happy Harbor, to get away from it all, and it hasn't stopped. I chose to come here and spend a few years here with my uncle, just so those words wouldn't come back to bite me in the butt. So when you say you only have Wolf, you should know you aren't alone." Placing her hands closer to Conner's anger bound fists, Megan hoped he would let her in, so they could fight together, and show people they weren't a force to be reckoned with. Conner gave a small smile, then said, "Thanks, I guess. I don't think I've ever heard anyone say they understand." Megan nodded, then gave a smile back. For once in her life, she was really happy, and not blushing from embarrassment. Maybe all she needed, was to hear that there were people like her: mentally broken and wounded. Suddenly, a dark shadow cast over the two, and Megan looked up into the face of Alexa. She wore a deep frown on her face, and asked harshly, "What are you doing with my boyfriend, Morse? Isn't there a rule somewhere about stealing dates?" Megan looked down, and heard Conner say, "It's fine, Alexa. I was just getting to know her. There isn't anything wrong with the situation, so stop picking on Megan." Alexa clenched her fist, and said, "Oh, come on, Conner! Don't you see...she's using you for her own gain. She's nothing like us. She isn't popular, she isn't cool, she isn't anything special. Why are you defending this mere girl, who has nothing?Don't you love me? Don't you want me? Don't you want to be the power couple at the dance, and be wanted by rich people, who could give you anything?" Megan listened for an answer, but didn't hear anything, except a sigh from across the table, and a shake from the table, from when Conner stood up. Looking up cautiously, she thought she saw a flash of sadness in Conner's eyes, but it was so fast it couldn't be real. Megan watched her crush stand up, and walk away, no exchange of words coming from him. As Conner exited the "Cave", Megan looked at Alexa, who threatened, "If I ever catch you with him alone ever again or see you trying to play flirty with him, you are going to be sorry you ever stepped foot in Happy Harbor or Justice High. You are going to be sorry, you ever existed." Watching Alexa turn swiftly, and walk out, Megan felt tears coming to her eyes. She couldn't believe Conner just stood up and left her, with no defense! Hadn't they just had a moment of reconciliation, where they both shared intimate feelings and emotions openly? Pulling out her phone, Megan sent a quick text to Artemis, saying, "Thing with Conner didn't work. I'm going to go home. Talk to you some other time, m'kay?" Standing up quietly, Megan slipped her purse over her shoulder, and slipped out the door, heading for the nearest bus stop.
