Chapter 14: Preparation Time
Upon arriving in Artemis' room, the two girls went over to a laptop on the desk, and waited until the screen came on. The blonde entered the password, then opened Skype, and sent a quick message to Zee, asking if then was a good time. Zee replied back yes, so with Megan watching, Artemis set up a cam video, and both tuned in. Once everything was set, and they were able to see each other, Zee held up two dresses, one in full purple, and the other in a gorgeous light yellow with a black trim. She asked, looking at her friends, "So which one should I wear to impress Robin with tonight? I'm thinking he's gonna probably be in a blue collared tux, but I don't have anything blue." Artemis suggested, "I think you in the yellow dress with black trim will go good with your raven black hair. Besides, it's got sparkles that look like magic, and I know how interested you are in that, because of your great grandfather, who was a skilled magician." Zee replied, "Wow, you are spot on, Artemis! I'll wear the yellow to honor my great grandfather. Hopefully my dad won't freak out, that you know. He hates people looking into our history, for some reason, as if he thinks I'm going to uncover some huge discovery, that could very easily damage my life, like if I were to have magic or something like that!" As if on cue, all three girls laughed, then Artemis said, "Hey Zee, Megan said she's definitely going to go with us tonight! I'm so excited! Wally told me he got something special he wants to give me, but he won't let anyone, not even the other guys, see it." Zee remarked, "Must be something really good, if he's not even going to share it with Robin, Conner, or Kaldur. I swear those four together always act like brothers, because of how close they are. Hey, also I heard from Robin that there is going to be a karaoke spotlight contest. The winners get a two day free homework pass on one class of their choosing! It may not be dinner, but it's still something I'd love to win, if Robin would sing, that is. He said he won't even be in the room when it's going on, because he won't sing. I don't even know why." Megan chimed in, and suggested, "Maybe he's just nervous of what others will think. I mean, he is the principal's son, and we all know the principal can be a stickler for rules." "Yeah, but isn't that usually the bad kids that get his bad side? I once talked to him, and he seemed pretty nice, friendly even. If you're on his bad side, he's a stickler, but if you are rare enough to get onto his good side, he's chill.", Zee replied. Artemis held up her hands in defeat, and said, "Hey, let's just stop talking about the principal right now, so if there is a hidden camera attached to the inside of the computer, we can be sure we aren't getting on his bad side. I really don't want to end up in that situation, like Mahkent did." Megan asked, turning to Artemis, "What-what happened to him? What was the situation?" Artemis replied, "I don't really know what happened to Cameron Mahkent*, but there have been rumors going around that he was expelled and sent to juvie for his last 'harmless prank', because he hasn't been seen anywhere in Happy Harbor in like three months solid. To tell you the truth, that guy was a complete coldhearted jerk, who deserved whatever happened to him." Zee stated, "We should probably get off and get ready for tonight. Do you think I should come over to your place, Artemis?" The blonde replied, "Sure, as you can see, Meg's already over and my other family members are gone for the night, so we have the house to ourselves." Zee grinned, and said, "I'll be over in a few minutes. Just need to get some stuff, then I'll be there." Megan waited patiently, as Artemis closed her computer top. Then both girls walked down the stairs, and went into the living room, to wait for Zee to arrive. When the doorbell rang, Artemis got up, and opened the door, letting in Zee, who was clutching her yellow and black dress, with a small plastic baggie that only contained eyeliner and mascara. Seeing the baggie, Artemis hinted, "Going au' naturale tonight, huh Zee? Robin shouldn't mind." "Yeah, I really just hate wearing a ton of stuff that gonna leave me feeling gross and sticky tomorrow. At least with these two, I can wash them off after the dance.", the young dark haired girl said. Megan implied, "Smart choice..." Artemis nodded, leading both Megan and Zee to her room upstairs. For what seemed like only a few minutes, even though it was really hours, the three discussed practically everything under the sun, from boys to school flunks. Finally, as the clock struck five, Artemis looked at her clock, and exclaimed, "Oh dang it.... Guys, we gotta hurry if we're gonna be ready to be at the dance by seven!" Megan remarked, "Hello Megan! I forgot the dress we bought yesterday for my meeting with Conner! What am I going to do?" Artemis reached into her closet, and almost magically pulled out a dress, shoved it at the ginger, and said simply, "Wear this. It'll go good with the red hair, and it'll look better on you, than it ever did on me." The dress was a short, knee high, strapless, martian green colored dress with small, fake emeralds intertwined into the gown itself. Megan said, gasping from amazement, "But Artemis, this is your dress and it looks so fancy!" The blonde replied, "Just wear it, Meg. You need to wear something that complements your red hair and green is the best color to do that. Plus, you don't want to show up to the dance in a dress Conner's already seen you in. You need something new, something bold, something more you." Shoving it into Megan's open arms, Artemis whipped around, and began working once again on herself, asking Zee to do up the back zipper for her on her own dress. Rushing to the bathroom, the whole hour dressing and preparing was just a complete blur to Megan, but she managed to get fully ready in all the chaos. Stepping out of the bathroom an hour later, fully ready to go, the ginger asked, "So how do I look? You think Conner will like this?" Artemis and Zee turned around, and the room fell silent, as both stared in awe at the beauty of the redhead in the green, sparkle dazzled dress. Zee rushed up to Megan and declared, "He'll love it for sure!" Artemis glanced over at the clock, and said firmly, yet sincerely, "Time to go. Meg, Zee's right. That looks incredible on you. After the dance, keep the dress." Megan smiled, and followed both Artemis and Zee down the stairs, and out to the car. Once all three were in the car, with Artemis back in control, they drove off to Justice High, for the greatest school dance in all of its history.
