Chapter 3: The capture

"This is surely getting interesting," Azula commented. "The Avatar on the opposing team?"

The princess sure was happy, Danny guessed as they walked down the street with no particular aim in mind. The previous match had been a pretty shocking and intriguing revelation. Albeit Korra was restricted to only using water, she was probably there to stay. Those Fire Ferrets were showing a lot of potential, nothing to be scoffed at. Yet, their teamwork was not as refined as that of Lizard Crows. It could be their weakness in the close future. Phantom also wondered as to where they were going to get their funding. Korra lacked any money of her own, as the situation in the park had shown. And those two guys...they slept in the stadium's attic, their piggybank was doubtfully all that full.

"And once again I find you enthusiastic about the championship," Danny smiled, folding hands behind his back.

"I guess we are finally settling it, you see...Haven't got the chance to finish it off before, have I," Azula responded half jokingly.

"My god, it is the same hunt over and over again."

"Relax," the princess huffed, "This time we aren't chasing anyone."

"Duly noted," Danny's look darkened, "Listen...that actually reminds me..."

"What?" A brief flash of concern shone through her golden eyes. Phantom would have smiled, if the topic had not been serious.

"An agent of mine came by yesterday. Severely wounded."

"How exactly?"

"To blend in all of my spies possess mortals. Usually those are some lowlives no one would care about. Not sure how I feel about that, but it is effective. However, to erase any suspicions they have to imitate bending like I do, and not all are successful, it seems. He was eavesdropping on the people around and found out that the Equalists are distributing the invitations to what they call a 'Revelation'. And apparently the big guy is going to be there as well. The fight began and, well...it didn't end all that well for him. He was lucky to make it to me all beaten and barely moving. Your thoughts?"

Azula smirked, "I propose that we be the mere observers. You do have that list?"

"Yep. Four of them. They make up quite a map...to their hiding spot, of course."

"Then we will just take those...and give them to the one in charge of the police force. It will be fun."

"It would seem like another act of tyranny. Not to mention that Amon would tighten the screws later and won't let such accidents happen."

"You mean us crashing their party won't? The idiots would believe him either way, but if we help catch that idiot, the movement will lose its leader thus buying us more time to act upon. If needed, he may not live to the trial," Azula made an ambiguous smile, "It is a win."

"That is if we succeed."

"Oh, please, Daniel. Do you think he can outrun someone who can pass through the walls and fly all around the world?"

"Fair point."

Not a moment too soon the doors of the Police building barged open. The people sitting at a multitude of desks turned their attention to the newest arrivals. Azula immediately leaned over the desk of one of the officers, without the characteristic metal protection. The officer jumped in his seat, and the surprisingly typewriter jumped along with him. Danny just stood near, letting her do the talking. It was her plan.

"I need to speak with your chief immediately."

"Uhm...she is busy, ma'am. Please, submit you request in proper order."

"This is urgent. You think Amon waits until Her Majesty decides to leave other businesses behind?"

"Well, she..." the officer froze.

"Just what you kids want here?" A voice came from behind the visitors.

It belonged to a woman in her fifties from the seems, with all the wrinkles on her face and short grey hair. But she was in a pretty good shape, maybe there was a corset below the black armour, but who knows. Her green eyes pierced into the couple suspiciously.

"Well?"

"Aren't we lucky?" Danny mumbled and smirked. "Greetings chief. Me and my girlfriend here just wanted to show our civil responsibility by informing you about the goings in the city."

Chief Beifong raised an eyebrow, "And what would that be?"

Azula stepped forward, "Look at those. Is your police going to do anything at all?" She shoved her the four lists which the chief examined, "This is your chance to get Amon."

"Are you taking us for idiots who don't know that?"

The officers looked at each other. They did?

Danny found the answer to be somewhat believable, but not enough, plus his companion seemed to think otherwise.

"Really now? And you even know where their place of meeting is?"

"Of course we do. Now get out of here or you will take a flight out."

"Sure, sure," Danny rolled his eyes as they turned to leave. But near the doors he turned around, "These lists make up a map, just in case."

The second the door closed Beifong looked at the policemen, tossing them the lists.

"I need to know about that place. Immediately."

Little did she know that they weren't totally alone. Near the doors Phantom absorbed his invisible spy.

"They didn't know anything," he deadpanned. The princess's expression was neutral.

"I told you, my dearest king," she said dramatically and waved her hand, "They are useless."

"I take it that the first step is done and now we come ourselves?"

"You read my thoughts. I don't trust that idiots."

The following day was quickly passed by doing a bit of sightseeing. Even after a while of being here there were plenty of places to visit. Azula sometimes got bored, as it wasn't really her type of entertainment. During her time with the jokester king she actually grew fond of reading and video games, who could have known. The issue was that none of those could be enjoyed at the lively streets of the Republic City. But with how busy Danny usually was, it was nice that the two were now spending so much time together.

And when the evening arrived, they began their search for this 'Revelation'. With the map in their disposal it was quite simple. Dressed in the simplest of clothes they went to the abandoned factory at the edge of the city. Together they had concocted an emergency plan, but hopefully it wouldn't come to this. First the two took a taxi to the required district, and, once they stepped on the wet soil, Danny took out the pieces of the map he had glued together and continued their path. Once they turned the final corner, Phantom put the map away. The entrance was right in front of him, guarded by one buff man.

"Act cool," both young people whispered to each other at the same time, and simultaneously taking each other's hands.

As they approached the doorman, the man raised his palm.

"This is a private event. No one gets in without an invitation."

"Danny, dear, I think he is talking about the leaflets," Azula said in a sugary voice and smiled, especially at seeing the blushing face. She knew that being so open would initially embarrass him.

Danny dug out the glued map and showed them to the man. "I hope them being shown like that still lets us in?"

The doorman eyed the leaflets, before making an inviting gesture, "The Revelation is upon us, my brother and sister."

As the couple hurried in, the iron door was closed behind them. Phantom looked at his chuckling girlfriend.

"Very funny."

"Hilarious," Azula laughed.

"Promise that if we marry you won't do that..."

Both of them instantly shut up with red faces. Instead of talking on that topic they went forward, deeper within the dark crimson corridors of the establishment. Pipes were sticking from everywhere and the smell of smoke hadn't left anywhere. It probably had been a metallurgical factory. Nonetheless, the directions were clear, as only one path was lit. Finally they made it to the main hall — a loud, crowded place. Something that didn't go unnoticed.

"Geez, benders sure have a nasty reputation around here," Danny mumbled.

"Envious much?" Azula asked. "I mean, even my father didn't do anything to antagonise JUST the nonbenders."

"He antagonised everyone," Danny snorted, "I guess we will have to hear it. By the way...I don't see any policemen."

"They might be just as undercover as we are. We will have to wait."

That was when the announcer spoke, "Please welcome your hero," a hatch opened in the middle of the stage, with the light pouring out from it, "Your savior ... Amon!"

Amon emerged from a trapdoor in the stage with a line of Equalists behind him under loud approving cheers of the crowd. A spotlight is turned on, showing the Equalist leader in his full glory. He was a tall man, fairly built, dressed in a dark costume that could or could not be a leather one. His main features were a mask and a hood over it. That was giving him a couple of extra points to the intimidation factor. Amon took the microphone from the special stand.

"My quest for equality began many years ago. When I was a boy, my family and I lived on a small farm. We weren't rich, and none of us were benders. This made us very easy targets for the firebender who extorted my father. One day, my father confronted this man, but when he did, that firebender took my family from me. Then, he took my face."

The crowd around gasped in shock. Azula raised an eyebrow.

"Odd," she commented, "The scary Fire Nation boogeymen killed the entire family but left him alive?"

"Maybe he ran away?" Danny shrugged. But no explanation followed.

"I've been forced to hide behind a mask ever since. As  you know, the Avatar has recently arrived in Republic City. And if she were here, she would tell you that bending brings balance to the world. But, she is wrong. The only thing bending has brought to the world, is suffering, " Amon started pointing into the audience, "It has been the cause of every war in every era."

"I guess Hitler was a bender too," Danny commented dryly.

"But that is about to change. I know you have been wondering, "What is the Revelation?" You are about to get your answer. Since the beginning of time, the spirits have acted as guardians of our world, and they have spoken to me. They say the Avatar has failed humanity."

Azula and Danny exchanged half-laughing glances. The latter waved his finger around his temple and whistled. Phantom of all people would know what the spirits were thinking.

"That is why the spirits have chosen me to usher in a new era of balance. They have granted me a power that will make Equality a reality. The power to take a person's bending away. Permanently."

"He can't be serious," all the irony in Azula's came to the abrupt halt. "It cannot be."

"Now, for a demonstration. Please welcome, Lightning Bolt Zolt."

An Equalist guard lead a tied up man onto the stage.

"Leader of the Triple Threat Triad, and one of the most notorious criminals in Republic City."

The crowd booed.

"Ah, boo yourself!" The neatly dressed gangster yelled in annoyance.

Equalist guards lead four more tied up benders onto the stage, pushed them to their knees. One of them was oddly familiar to the couple.

"Wait...is that...

"That Fire Ferret member," Danny finished. "We are going to watch only the first demonstration, correct?"

Azula nodded with a serious face. "Yes. Let him finish, I need to see this."

"Zolt has amassed a fortune by extorting and abusing nonbenders. But his reign of terror is about to come to an end."

Yes, only them. Sarcastic interlude here.

"Now, in the interest of fairness," Zolt was untied, "I will give Zolt the chance to fight to keep his bending."

Amon  stepped away Zolt and the Equalist guard pushed Zolt in the opposite direction Amon took to bring some space between the two.

"You're gonna regret doing that, pal."

Lightning Bolt Zolt immediately hurled a fire blast at Amon. With ease the Equalist leader dodged every blast that Zolt throwed at him, steadily coming closer.

"And he calls himself a firebender? He is a laughable amateur," Azula muttered, before Danny patted her on the shoulder.

Zolt fired the bolt at the Equalist leader who ducked underneath it, grabbed hold of Zolt's wrist, and twisted it around. Amon moved his hand from Zolt's wrist to his forehead. Amon placed his thumb in the center, and then the show started. Zolt began to shake, yet Amon held him firmly. Then the Equalist stepped back, giving the firebender one last chance. Zolt tried to launch fire...but failed. The gust never came. He crashed back to the ground before the feet of the Equalist leader. The crowd gasped.

"Wha ... what did you do to me?!" He screamed.

"Your firebending is gone. Forever. The era of bending is over. A new era of Equality has begun!"

The crowd erupted into deafening cheers. Danny flinched, as his hearing was still sensitive. He looked at Azula, who was watching everything with an astonished expression. It was not good. He slightly shook her.

"It is time, princess," Danny reminded.

"Yes...do your part, Phantom."

At this the couple separated, going to the two sides of the scene. Phantom cracked his knuckles along the way, as his eyes briefly flashed green. For this task he would even use his ghost powers. Amon must not escape, he thought. Azula thought in a similar way, although for the first time in a long while she actually felt...nervous.

Suddenly things began to escalate maybe too quickly. From several entrances inside the meeting room barged the metalbending police, not a moment too soon. With the shouts for the civilians to lie down, they moved in. However, a problem followed, as it was not a friendly crowd of captives. The police was attacked by an angry mob, the fight ensued, and only two teens smirked. Just as planned. The path to the still Amon was clearer. The Equalist apparently wanted to see the result of his brainwashing, how the police was beating up the innocents, and how said "innocents" were feeling their power over the overwhelmed policemen. He even stopped his men from helping the crowd.

Next came a totally unexpected part. Hot steam filled the entire hall, to the shock of everyone present. The couple was just at the bottom of the staircase that led to the stage. Damn. That. Steam. Luckily Phantom quickly found out how to solve that problem. A wave of his hand was enough to cast it away. Just barely he saw Amon entering one of the doors. Phantom decided to make a run for it, while Azula started fighting the Equalists. The right hand of Amon had scurried off somewhere, leaving her with only simplest of grunts. Knowing fully well about her advantage — distance, Azula launched fire waves, under which, even if one did dodge, their comrade fell. One did get close enough, however. One swing of the electrified stick followed.

Azula screamed in pain, almost falling to her knees, and the second strike would have come, if not for the metal rope that hit the man dead on. The girl shook her head, looking at her saviour.

"What the hell are you doing here?!" Beifong exclaimed as the rope went back into her glove.

Azula smiled weakly. "Same thing as before. I have to go."

"No, wait girl," Beifong grabbed her hand, "I need to know what you and your boyfriend are up to."

"Unhand me. Now," Azula growled.

For a person who walked at a steady pace Amon was too quick. But luckily Phantom was quicker. Enough to catch up with someone who theatrically leaves the place of action. There he was, going through the corridor. Soundlessly landing behind him, Danny grinned.

"Going somewhere?"

Amon stopped, before starting to slowly turn around, "Now, who might you be?"

Phantom shrugged, "Someone who didn't buy your tales."

"I have no time for this, boy. If you don't wish to suffer, don't distract me."

Danny lazily swiped his hand, pinning Amon against the metal pipes.

"Nah. I'm not done yet."

"A...bloodbender..." the man uttered, sounding almost shocked. It wasn't full moon yet, and the only ones who could do this...

Phantom raised an eyebrow. It was mere telekinesis. Oh well.

Danny hurled Amon into another wall. The latter tried to stand on his place, but the telekinesis did not follow the same rules. Amon realised that it wasn't the bloodbending. Then what was it?

"Nice speech, by the way. I'm impressed."

Phantom hadn't noticed how he ended up too close to the man. In a swift move Amon kicked the young man in the gut, before beginning his assault. Danny recovered from the first hit in a second, beginning to dodge the strikes or block them, his strength allowed the latter. The training in hand-to-hand were useful to hold the offensive. And yet the years of difference spoke for themselves. Amon was more proficient. Suddenly grabbing the young man's collar the Equalist smashed him into another pipe. Phantom cried from the steam hitting his face.

"Impressive, but not enough," Amon said. He had to drop his calm facade and hurried away.

Danny smirked, despite his face being all red from the scorching steam, before snapping his fingers. Amon hit the green wall, and the barrier resonated loudly, not letting the Equalist exit the corridor. Phantom floated in the air and stood on his feet. His eyes flashed green, shining brightly even in the dark crimson lights of industrial lamps.

"You ain't going anywhere, pal."

"You are a ghost," Amon said, making the halfa grin.

"Not just any ghost," Danny opened his hands wide and laughed, "Now let's get this over with."

Seeing no other option, the Equalist lunged forward. He was weaponless, he had to get closer. Phantom waited for the strike, and only a split second later the strike came at him. And then passed through his body. Danny kicked the opponent's leg, as Amon had lost his balance already. A swiping strike followed, hitting the man's neck. Then Phantom tossed the Equalist leader several meters forward.

"You say that the spirits sent you on your quest? To take what was given by them?" Danny asked.

"Yes. Benders have plunged this world into endless wars. This is not what the bending was given for."

"So you can name the spirit you've conversed with? I would like to have a word or two."

Amon didn't answer, getting up from his lying position. However, before he could do anything, from behind the Equalist was hit by a torrent of flames. He yelled from pain, falling on the ground again with his clothes all red, with burned off robes. Right at the half ghost's feet. Immediately from the same spot emerged metal ropes that tied the man completely. He hissed, with the ropes tightly hugging the burned back. The mask fell off.

"Took you long enough," Danny chuckled.

"Say your thanks to the chief here," Azula pointed at Beifong, before noticing his face. "What happened?" She approached him and inspected the wound closer.

"Nah, just a simple burn. It'll heal by tomorrow. Hello again, chief. Have you taken care about the crowd?"

"You are going with me to my office, kids. You have some explaining to do."

"Hey, we caught Amon. Say hi," Danny looked at Amon.

Azula kicked the Equalist in his head, earning herself multiple looks. "What? If not knocked out he would be dangerous."

A comment about possibly killing the nuisance went by without being spoken out. It would make the couple's position worse.

The entire building was surrounded by a huge number of the policemen not soon after. The chief had come with a small detachment, which was both daring and foolish. Yet it worked out, thanks to the glorious efforts of the couple of royals. Nonetheless, a huge force was required to pacify the angry people without many casualties. One single death of a bystander could cause a revolution with how heated up the things were. Amon was roughly pushed inside the police van after the reporters took plenty of photos of the unconscious man. And despite the cheerful atmosphere among the policemen surrounding the couple, Danny felt like something was missing. Then, a voice called him.

"Hey! Hey, you!"

"You've got to be kidding me," Phantom muttered to the confusion of the princess.

"Good evening, Miss Korra. Here to join the party?" He asked, turning to her.

"I guess you can say that," Korra rubbed the back of her head, "What are you doing here, though?"

Before Danny could speak, however, Azula spoke first. "We just helped these buffoons catch the most dangerous man around."

Phantom noticed the glares. "God, princess, you are so inconsiderate sometimes," he muttered.

"Oh, hello there, beautiful," that guy from the Fire Ferrets approached her. "Interested in getting to know good old Bolin?"

"Aaaanyway," Danny smiled and wrapped his hand around Bolin's neck, getting a little to the side, "That's got to be the worst flirt with someone's girlfriend, ever."

"Sh-she is your girlfriend?! Oops," he chuckled nervously.

"Yeah, besides..." Danny leaned closer to his ear, "She will rip your hands off, fry and toss you into the slums. Don't try it." He whispered.

Bolin's imagination ran wild, and the picturesque description sure had lent a hand. Phantom just patted him on the shoulder.

"Just who are you, people?" The second guy asked.

"Well, we..."

"I'm exhausted, Danny," Azula suddenly leaned against her boyfriend, "Let's go home."

"I thought we were going to the police station," Danny raised an eyebrow.

"To hell with that hag, I want to go to sleep," The princess rubbed against his cheek. Damn it, she knew how to make him do what she wanted.

"She is standing behind us."

Azula looked there, only to see a pissed face.

"Darn."
