twelve.

The next morning, Violet woke up to gentle kisses along her cheekbones, and automatically she groaned. She reached out with a hand to push away Peter's face, rolling over on her side and turning her back to him. Her eyes closed, and she didn't want to leave her nice dreamworld just yet.

"Violet," he groaned, draping his arm over her stomach to pull her back to his chest and burying his face in her neck. "It's time to get up. Breakfast and stuff." His voice dropped to a whisper as he placed soft kisses behind and below her ear. "Please, darling. Usually I'm the one that doesn't want to get up."

Her head tilted away from him, deeper into the pillow as she hummed softly. "It feels way too early. Can't we just stay in for a bit? I don't have a first period today." Rolling back over to face him, she let herself sink into his touch, burying her face in his neck and enjoying the warmth that radiated off of his bare chest.

A chuckle came from deep in his throat, and she felt it rumble in his chest. "It's the normal time, and I still have a first period. As much as I love laying with you, we can continue this early tonight. As soon as we get home. I have nothing else to do," he mused, his fingers tracing up and down the curve of her spine.

She sighed, pulling back and looking up at his deep brown eyes. "Fine. I guess." Then she was quiet for a second, her eyes drifting down to his chest and tracing small heart shapes onto the bare skin. "I think I'm gonna try to go home today."

Violet could practically feel Peter's eyes shoot to her, and watched as his eyebrows raised. "Really?" He questioned. "Have you talked to your father or mother since you left?"

The girl managed a shrug despite laying down. "My father texted me a dozen times, but I've not answered. I've answered a few of my mom's calls, but all of them ended with her practically waving off all of my feelings and me hanging up." Her eyes stayed away from her boyfriend's, who she knew was looking at her with nothing but pity and intrigue.

"Well, I'm proud of you for being willing to go back. And you need to call me if you need anything at all, okay?" His chin tilted down so that he could press a soft kiss to her head, and she leaned into the kiss.

Her eyebrows furrowed and she looked up at him. "Oh, so you'll leave school if I'm having a crisis, but not if I just want to cuddle? Priorities, Parker," she teased, sitting up so that she could lean over him, placing a hand on his shoulder so that she could lean down to kiss his smiling lips.

After a couple of moments of pure bliss in their own little bubble, the two separated, getting up to get dressed. After they were both dressed for the day, they grabbed their bags, making sure everything was together before heading downstairs to eat some nice breakfast. Then, they parted ways, Peter heading for school and Violet heading back to her house.

Coming up to the house she had grown up in made uneasiness swirl around in her stomach, and she picked at the end of her sleeves. Naturally, she wished Peter was there with her to comfort her, and she immediately shook the thought from her head. Since when did she need a man to feel comfortable? Putting on her best brave face, she pulled her keys out of her hoodie pocket, opening the door and stepping inside warily.

The house had the same uncomfortable vibe it had had when she had last entered it, except this time, it looked different. Mens' shoes had joined her mother's and her discarded ones on the shoe rack near the door, and the house even smelled more manly than it had when only two women lived there. She bit the inside of her cheek as she stepped in.

"Mom? Da...." Violet stopped herself before she could call out for her father. The man was nothing like a father to her, hadn't been all her life, and so she couldn't really call him 'Dad.' He hadn't earned that yet.

In only a split second, Lilah rounded the corner, wrapped in a soft-looking robe with her hair pulled up in a bun. Her lips parted in surprise, before her face contorted into one of relief. "Violet, you're home," she murmured, stepping forward to pull her daughter into a hug.

Uncomfortable with the touch, she stood still before stepping back, clearing her throat and pulling her backpack full of stuff higher on her shoulder. "Just for a second. I need to grab more stuff, I've been wearing the same clothes for a week." As if reiterating her point, she gestured to her backpack with her eyes before running her fingers through her hair.

Her mother's lips pressed together in a tight line before she nodded. "I did your laundry while you were gone, you should have an array of options on your bed."

A beat passed, and Violet tilted her head in confusion. She couldn't remember the last time her mother had been home, awake, long enough to do laundry, and now all of hers was done? Is leaving all it took for her mother to suddenly decide to be present? It made her want to roll her eyes, but she refrained, taking a step towards the steps. "Thanks."

Lilah stayed quiet for another few seconds before looking at Violet with almost pleading eyes. "Are you at least being safe? Like, staying somewhere safe? With good people?"

The teenager took a couple of steps backwards up the stairs before nodding. "I'm staying at my boyfriend's house, with his aunt and uncle. They're nice." She felt inclined to only say as little as possible, suddenly wishing she hadn't come back. But she needed some of her stuff, and so she had to endure this.

Her mother's face stayed blank, but she nodded. "Good, I'm glad."

And with that, Violet turned to skitter upstairs, sliding into her room before shutting and locking her door. When she turned around, her clothes lay folded on her bed, except for her shirts, which were just neatly laid on her bed, ready to be hung up. With a heavy sigh, she stepped forward, picking out her best pieces, especially ones that could be mixed into many different outfits. In a couple of moments, she had them packed neatly in her backpack, and she zipped it up.

Grabbing another bag, the girl stepped into her en-suite bathroom, grabbing her shower products, make-up and skin care products. She had been using Peter's shampoo, conditioner and body wash and, although she smelled great, she didn't really like matching scents with her boyfriend. Plus, she had been neglecting her skin, and it was very obvious by the zit blossoming on the edge of her eyebrow.

After grabbing everything she assumed she'd need, enough time had passed for her to start encroaching on her time limit, and so she threw both bags over her shoulders before making her way back downstairs. Surprisingly, it seemed like her mother had left in the time she had been upstairs, and this time she actually did roll her eyes.

Typical.

Violet left, walking back to Peter's house to drop her stuff off before changing and going to school, making it just in time to slide into her second period during the five-minute grace period after the bell. Under the desk, she sent a quick text to Peter to let him know she had made it to school, and promised to meet him at their lockers during the passing period.

Class couldn't seem to be longer, her leg bouncing as she listened to her teacher drone on and took notes. It seemed like hard work to actually make her notes look good, and it just reminded her how much she had let herself slack the past week she had been staying with Peter and dealing with everything.

Thinking about what she was dealing with reminded her about the Lizard, and her lips pressed together. There had been radio silence since the whole thing in the sewers, and it made her nervous. When would he return? Would he hold a high body-count if Peter couldn't make it there in time?

Not like she wanted him to be there, anyway, but she knew it was for the greater good.

When the bell rang, she sprang up, throwing her stuff into her backpack and rushing out faster than everyone else did. Arriving upon her locker, Peter was already leaning against it, and a smile blossomed across his face at the sight of his girlfriend. His arms wrapped around her waist the second she was within grabbing distance, and he leaned down to kiss her. "God, I missed you," he mumbled against her lips, kissing her once more before pulling back. "How did it go?"

She giggled softly at the PDA before shaking her head. "How I assumed it would. Not bad, not good. Told my mom I have a boyfriend though," she revealed, grinning.

Peter grinned, leaning against his locker. "Oh, you have a boyfriend? Really? What's he like?" He teased.

Violet opened her mouth to respond, but was interrupted by the sound of intense crashing. She tensed, and almost immediately her heart dropped into her gut. "Peter."

He whipped around towards the sound, his face dropped into a serious look. Right in front of their eyes, a large, scaly monster smashed through the wall of the school, destroying the wall as if it was made of cardboard. Peter let out a deep breath before he turned to look at Violet. "Go. Go!"

Frightened but also immensely worried, she turned and took a few steps in the other direction before turning to gaze back at her boyfriend. Despite the teenagers running towards him, Peter stepped in the direction of the Lizard, slightly crouched as if it would keep him safe. She watched in slight horror as he sprinted towards the monster, sliding just as he got close and narrowly dodging a heavy hand slashing right for his head. While on the floor, he slung a web to connect to the Lizard's leg, tripping him and causing the mutated doctor to slam his head on the tile floor.

While the Dr. Connors was down, Peter jumped on his beck, raising a fist to punch him, but the Lizard reached up to grab his shoulder, pulling him down and slamming him on his back. In a second, the Lizard ripped off his backpack as Peter tried to run, tossing it behind him before grabbing him by the shoulders and slamming him into the lockers, causing a huge dent to form in the metal.

Violet sucked in a hard breath, hiding even more behind the doorway she was cuddled behind. Everything in her screamed for her to run, to leave this behind, but she couldn't think about Peter having a huge chance of not succeeding. She wanted to know what was happening.

The Lizard whipped around, throwing Peter through the other wall and sending him straight through it, right into the science classroom. He then followed after, and Violet cursed at the lack of visuals on her boyfriend.

Her eyes closed as she just tried to listen, trying not to weep at the sound of crashing and thumping. A deep, gravely voice echoed across the hall. "Nowhere to hide, Peter." It sent chills down her spine, and her brain moved at a mile a minute.

The teenager heard the crash of someone else going through a wall, before the shattering of glass and, to her disappointment, an explosion. Unable to help herself, she ran towards the hole in the wall, peering into it. From where she stood, she could see the back of the Lizard, scaly and more muscled than she cared to admit.

"All these souls, lost and alone. I can save them. I can cure them. There's no need to stop me, Peter." The Lizard croaked, standing still while staring at a smoking hole in the wall. By the way he was speaking, she assumed Peter was still alive, and she almost laughed when something flew out of the hole to slam into the Lizard's head.

He roared just as Peter, now adorned in his Spiderman suit, jumped out of the wall like he hadn't been barbecued a moment before. Her boyfriend crossed his arms, shooting webs on either side of the Lizard's face and pulling back the minute they connected with the roof, pulling down lights and slamming them into the back of Dr. Connors' head.

Using this time to crawl on the ceiling, Peter jumped on the Lizard's back, shooting webs and covering the monster's eyes, causing him to claw at his face and try to hit off Peter, to no avail.

"You're not thinking straight, doc," he crooned, keeping his voice calm. As the duo stomped their way towards her, Violet scrambled away again, hiding behind the doorway again. Peter slipped off of his back, smoothly swinging to just hop back on, still shooting more webs. "Stop this. This isn't you."

After shooting enough webs, he pulled back, controlling the Lizard by his mouth, like a bridle on a horse. Horribly irritated, the Lizard slammed his back into the lockers, causing Peter to flatten behind him. The boy jumped away just as claws scratched right through the metal, bringing an irritating crunching noise to Violet's ears just as her boyfriend swung to the ceiling.

He hung on the ceiling for a second, looking down on the monster. "Let's talk this out."

Copying him, the Lizard crawled on the ceiling, following after him. Violet was surprised it didn't come down on top of both of them.

"Doc!" Peter yelled, as if yelling could get through to the doctor beneath the reptilian skin. He jumped down from the ceiling and the Lizard ungracefully followed, rolling on his hands and knees as Peter plastered his hand to the lockers with webs. Effortlessly, he pulled his hand out, and Peter stepped back. "Oh, boy."

The fight continued with a bunch of flips and smooth dodges from Peter, and he crouched when he was far enough away. "You don't want to talk? There you go," he taunted as he shot webs at the Lizard's face, which was solely ripped off. He ducked as a large tail swung at his head, grabbing it as he was almost pummeled by it, before it was used to slam him against every wall in sight. "Don't... make me.... hurt you!"

In a second, the teenager was sent flying down the hallway, the Lizard's now-disconnected tail in his arms just as another one regrew on the monster.

Not being able to stand it anymore, Violet looked around the hallway, her gaze catching on the cracked trophy case. She grabbed the biggest trophy she could find before rushing out into the hallway, approaching the two just as the Lizard held tight on Peter's face, holding him against a window. With a grunt, she swung the trophy with as much force as possible, resulting in a hard thunk.

The Lizard dropped Peter, slowly turning towards her. At the sight of his girlfriend, Spiderman glanced at Violet.

"Violet..." Dr. Curt Connors growled, recognizing her from what Peter had said and shown him.

Meanwhile, the girl stared up at the monster, her eyes widening. He was so much scarier up close, especially when he stepped even closer to tower over her. She squeaked when a large monster hand swung at her, flinching and yet saved by a web shooting and catching it. Peter used his upper hand to swing around the Lizard multiple times, shooting silk as he went and wrapped the monster in a bubble of silk, like a spider trapping it's prey.

He connected the cocoon to the ceiling before turning to his girlfriend, shooting out a web to pull the trophy from her hands before throwing it out of the window next to them. He pulled her close, his head tilting as he spoke. "I'm gonna throw you out the window," he abruptly announced.

Violet only had enough time to look at him in bewilderment before she was airborne, soaring through the shattered glass like she weighed nothing. She screamed without even thinking, waiting to be slammed into the concrete and wondering how mad her boyfriend had to be to murder her impulsively. Thankfully, she was caught by a string of web that reminded her that he loved her, hanging from the building. Holding on to the thread keeping her safe, she looked up at where she had come from, her eyebrows furrowing.

The audacity of men.

The sound of sirens immediately hit her ears, and she turned just in time to see the red and blue lights approaching. "Uh-oh. Somebody's been a bad lizard." Peter's voice echoed out the crack in the wall, and she couldn't help but roll her eyes.

When the fire department arrived, they worked quickly on getting Violet down, and gave her a simple check-up, much to her dismay. Paramedics moved to check on every student that had now gathered outside the shambled high school, and she couldn't do anything but continue to call her boyfriend on his phone, hoping he'd answer, even if she knew he wouldn't quit until he was forced to or something significant happened.

Finally, around her fifth call, Peter answered on the first ring. "Hey," he greeted breathlessly.

Tense, she tried to speak with at least worry as possible. "Where are you?"

"I'm fine, I'm okay," he mumbled, and she let out a deep breath. "I'm in the sewer, tracking him. I gotta stop him before anyone gets hurt. But we need an antidote..." He trailed off, before continuing to speak. "I need you to get Gwen to run a serum for me. Go with her to Oscorp, tell her to access the cross-species file. It's a blue serum. File one-two-three-eight-nine."

Pressing her lips together with the stress of the situation, she nodded. "Got it. On my way."

After another moment of silence between them, she heard his voice again, soft but sincere. "I love you, Violet."

Closing her eyes, she nodded. "I love you, too, Peter. I'll see you soon."

And with that out of the way and a heavy heart, she disconnected the call, immediately searching for the blonde that not only hated her guts, but was their only chance at taking this thing down for good.
