CHAPTER TWENTY SIX
"It's okay to say you've got a weak spot
You don't always have to be on top"
Athena was in between a rock and a hard place as she sat in the pews, Archie on one side of her and Reggie on the other. She was awkwardly in between the two and even if she and Archie had made their peace, there was still a tension in the air. Reggie's hand rested on her thigh and Athena could see Archie glaring at it in the corner of her eye. Reggie traced small circles on her skin before giving her a soft peck on the cheek. They watched the ceremony, Athena, on edge the entire time as she watched Veronica if she renounced Satan.
Reggie pinched her thigh slightly at the question, a playful smile on his lips as Athena bit her lip and soft brought her hand down to his stomach, giving it a small whack. Archie's jaw was clenched as he looks in front of him, ignoring the two. Athena and Reggie were in their own bubble and there was no denying that as they glanced at each other with a loving gaze. Archie's mind flashed back to when she used to look at him like that and his heart ached. They still had love between them and they both knew it. Archie just hoped that time made the heart grow fond.
The ceremony was quick and soon, the couple was left standing in a corner praying the night would end. "Hey, Reg. I'm just going to go say hi to Betty." She gave him a quick kiss on the cheek, feeling a little guilty about leaving him when he knew pretty much no one. Betty wasn't that fond of him, so Athena didn't want to force a conversation between the two. "Hey, Betty.... and Archie." Athena sent a smile the boy who stood next to Betty, both of them looking uncomfortable and awkward in the room that was filled with Veronica's family members.
"Athena! What did you think of the ceremony?" Betty brought Athena in for a hug causing them both to let out a sigh as they immediately felt less tense. "Yeah, it was good. Very interesting." Betty nodded and the two girls turned to Archie who gave them both a small smile before looking at Veronica who walked towards them. "Hello, ladies. Mind if I steal my boyfriend for a minute?" Betty gave Veronica a nod and looked around the crowd. "Yeah, I'm going to go find Jughead." Athena felt a pang in her chest as her friends walked away, leaving her on her own.
"Hey babe, they have some great shrimp here." Reggie came up next to her before he looked down at her eyes that began to well up with tears. "Hey, hey. What's wrong?" Reggie immediately wrapped his arms around the redhead causing her to let go of all the emotion she was burying deep down. "I've ruined it. I've ruined all my friendships. I should have never dated Archie." Athena quietly cried out, unaware of Reggie guiding her out onto a balcony. He rubbed soft circles on her back, trying to comfort his weeping girlfriend.
"No, you didn't. And hey, you can't change the past, so you just have to learn to embrace it. Give it time." Athena pulled away from him, suddenly aware that they were away from the party. "I think that's the smartest thing I've ever heard you say." Athena chuckled as she wiped her tears away from her cheeks. Reggie laughed along with her and kissed her forehead. "All because of you, babe." They stood silent for a minute or two as they just held onto each other, not caring about the party going on.
"Do you want to start heading home?" Reggie asked causing Athena to smile up at him and nod, wondering how he seemed to always be on the same page as her. "I'd like that. We have to say goodbye to Ronnie." The two walked back into the party and saw a stressed out looking Veronica. "Hey, Veronica. Is everything okay?" Athena asked, her eyebrows furrowed as she looked at her friend with concern. "Yeah, everything is fine. Are you two leaving now?" Athena gave her a forced smile and a nod before wrapping her in a tight hug, one that was reciprocated.
"Thank you both for coming." Veronica was always a good host and said goodbye, politely before running off to do god knows what. "Madam." Reggie held out his arm for Athena who laughed and grabbed onto it before the two began to make their way home. The car ride was short and sweet until they pulled up to Athena's home and saw a car parked in her driveway. "Whose care is that?" Reggie asked with a raised eyebrow causing Athena to shrug and get out of the car, taking slow steps towards her home.
"Athena, slow down. You're not Nancy freaking Drew." But as Athena looked in the window, she let out a gasp that sent Reggie running towards her. "What? Who's that?" Athena stared at her mother and Hal Cooper with a horrified expression on her face before she turned away and looked at Reggie. "That's Betty's dad." Reggie's nose crinkled in disgust before the two moved away from the window and toward her door. "I don't want to go in there," Athena said with a tinge of disgust in her voice.
Reggie shook his head and looked at her with a pitiful gaze. "I wouldn't want to either." They both looked at each other for what felt like a couple of minutes before Reggie pointed his thumb at his car behind him. "Wanna stay at my place?" Athena gave him a look before sighing and throwing her hands up in the air. "Come on, Reggie. Be serious." Reggie jokingly gasped and clutched his hand to his chest. "I am being serious. No funny business unless you want to." Athena gave him a smile and nodded before hugging him quickly and rushing to his car.
She felt like an actual teenager as they snuck into his house, both giggling as they walked around quietly. They closed the door, finally safe in Reggie's room and Athena was shocked at how clean his bedroom was. "Oh my god. Reggie, how is your room so clean?" She laughed, her hand running along the clean surface of his desk. "Because I'm not an animal. You gotta give me more credit than that, Athena." He laughed before pulling out two pairs of identical tracksuit pants. Athena took off her shoes and slipped on the sweatpants underneath her dress before slipping it off her top half.
Reggie turned to her and gave her a wink as he admired her top half causing the girl to give him the finger and grab the t-shirt he was holding out to her. They both relaxed into his bed and Reggie fell asleep within five seconds of his head hitting the pillow, one arm wrapped around her shoulder. Athena was sleepless and she couldn't help but think about Archie. Why couldn't she get that stupid boy out of her mind?
THIS IS SO SHIT. But as you all know I don't really care anymore. I'm realizing how much the core four, don't interact with each other that much like at all because I'm trying to keep it all sort of normal. And I have unfortunately discovered that they are doing a Riverdale musical spin-off based on another character.
Thanks, Queenie.
