CHAPTER TWELVE
"Cuttin' me down to the bone
Whoah, we're standing on the edge
Fallin' for a rollin' stone"
Athena sat in Pop's biting her nails as she stressed about her sister. The death of their father and brother brought the two sisters together and seeing Cheryl in tears the night before caused Athena to become enraged. Athena munched on the waffles before slowing down as she saw Jughead walk in with a serpent girl. The redhead slipped down as their food was quickly brought to them. Athena hadn't really talked to her friend in since he went to the southside.
"Athena?" She saw Jughead question with his eyebrows furrowed. Athena gave him a small wave before walking over to the booth swiftly. "Hey Jug." Athena bent down and gave him a hug before he scooted over causing Athena to be face to face with the serpent girl. "Hi, I'm Athena." The Blossom girl held out her hand which caused the girl to extend her own and shake it.
"Toni." Athena smiled before turning back to Jug with a smile on her face. She hadn't caught up with the mysterious boy face to face in a while. "How are you and Betty?" Athena hadn't talked to the Betty since her outburst in Nick's hotel room and she almost missed the daily updates she'd get given by Betty. "You don't know?" Jughead chuckled incredulously as he received a shake of her head before bitterly shaking his head.
"Betty sent Archie to sever ties with me. Not the most pleasant conversations I've had." Athena's eyes widened, confused about Jughead's statement and how her boyfriend had failed to mention it to her. Athena quickly averted the conversation before leaving the two young serpents to their own devices.
Slinging her coat over her shoulder, she glanced up only to see her boyfriend and Betty staring at Toni and Jughead laughing in the booth. Sighing, Athena walked towards them but before anyone could say anything, Betty and Archie get a call from their parents informing them to get to the Coopers house immediately. Athena decided to go with the two, barely talking with either of them.
"Riverdale's best and brightest, huh?" Alice patronizingly said to the group who all sat with their parents, Athena was starting to regret her decision to tag along, sticking out like a sore thumb in the bunch. "Alice, thank you for hosting." Major McCoy sat with a smile on her face, clean and proper. Josie sat at the end next to Veronica with Athena and Archie sitting side by side near the other end.
"Of course, Mayor McCoy. When I heard what happened at Nick's party, I decided that we should come together to deal with this motley crew of liars, dope-fiends, and fornicators. Except for my Betty, who was smart enough to leave the party before it descended into a bacchanalian free for all." Almost everyone in the room rolled their eyes at the overdramatic sentences that Alice Cooper seemed to always say.
"Oh, my God. Mom, please don't." Betty subtly protested causing Veronica to scoff quietly. "Oh great, here we go Saint Betty and Succubus Veronica." Athena nodded before seeing Betty out of the corner of her eye look at the pair with guilty eyes. She gave the same look to Athena multiple times when they were walking. "So, this is for clarity, Alice. You're hosting this little get-together to what?" Athena turned her head to Veronica who started to go off on a tangent.
"You know, I may have taken Jingle Jangle, but she's the one who had a psychotic break." Veronica's words were harsh but true. She was soon interrupted by Archie who kept his eyes trained on the adults. "Cut her some slack, Veronica. She just broke up with Jughead." Athena scoffed. "Well, Archie did. At least that's what Jughead told me." Athena spat out causing Archie to turn towards her with wide eyes and a guilt-ridden face.
"What? Hashtag Bughead is no more? And Betty didn't tell me?" Before anyone could answer Kevin, Alice cleared her throat to get the teenagers attention back to the matters at hand. "Careful throwing stones there, acid-queen Alice. I'm not the only one in this room that knows the story behind that mugshot that your daughter printed in her paper." Hermione smiled as her husband took Alice down a notch, something everyone liked to see.
"Well I, for one, would like to know who brought the Jingle Jangle to the party?" The question was replied to with silence, none of the teens sitting down moving until Reggie slowly placed his hand up which his mother promptly shoved down. "Reginald, not a single word out of your mouth until we get a lawyer." Reggie's mother snapped at her son. "No, all Reggie needs to tell us, Melinda, is how he acquired it." His mother quietened down for a second, chiming in every so often.
"Some gang member who deals on the Southside." Reggie gave up, dabbing the sweat off of his face. "Once again, Mayor, the Southside is the source of all our problems." Hiram points out which receives nods from all of the parents. "Was he a Serpent? Does he go to Southside High?" Sheriff Keller questioned. "I think so, yeah."
"What does it matter? Not all Serpents are drug dealers." Athena knew that he was right but as she was pissed off at him, said nothing. "Archie, not helping." Fred put his son in check causing Archie to slump back and steal small glances at Athena. "Look, we shouldn't have taken the JJ, but Nick's the one who asked Reggie to get it and then pushed it on us. He's the one who should be in the hot seat. I mean, he's the one who roofied Cheryl and tried to assault her." Veronica defended the miscreants as most of them hung their heads in shame.
"Prosecuting Nick St. Clair would be difficult given that all witnesses were high." Athena scoffed before speaking after Sheriff Keller. "Yeah, but Veronica, Josie and I saw Nick with Cheryl the night after the party, and all of us weren't on Jingle Jangle." The adults all looked at her in dismay as she tried to defend their acts. "The drug stays in your system for three days. So if I drug tested you right now, you'd have a credibility problem." Athena slumped back, leaning towards Veronica as Archie tried to wrap his arm around her.
"Josie, you took that drug? You put that poison in your system, knowing the way your father's struggled with addiction? I see. From this moment on, bringing the Southside under control is my number one priority as mayor. If it means razing it to the ground or arresting every single Serpent in sight, starting at that high school, so be it. Let's go, Josephine, now!" After Mayor McCoy's spiel, Athena stormed out of Cooper household, hearing faint shouts from Archie.
"Athena!" Athena was spun around as Archie grabbed her bicep causing her to give him a glare. "What's up with you?" Athena scoffed and chuckled loudly as the rest of the teenagers and the parents walked past them, giving them confused glances. "What's up with me? What's up with you, Archie? I know that you and Betty have been friends for years and so have we, but what she said to Ronnie was totally uncalled for. So, explain to me why you are so chummy with her?" Athena raised an eyebrow as Archie sighed and looked to Betty who stared at the two from a window.
"I--I can't say." Athena scoffed again, loudly before bitterly shaking her head. "I'm guessing you also can't say why you didn't tell me that you broke up with Jughead for Betty and then failed to tell me about it?"Archie slowly shook his head causing Athena to turn around and walk away. "Athena wait--" Archie called out causing Athena to snap her glaring eyes back towards him. "Don't follow me and don't call me." Athena stormed away from her boyfriend, needing time to cool off as the feeling of betrayal simmered in the pit of her stomach.
That episode was pretty good. I must say though, I kind of wanted to see Jughead's reaction to Betty being blackmailed but all it did was kind of fade out. Also, I am soooooo glad that I made the decision to stick with Cheryl being roofied because it turned out to be a pre-huge story arc for her so Whoopi.
Thanks, Queenie.
