Epilogue - Part 2

Kat and Mo arrived by taxi in the evening. Mo seemed slightly nervous, but Kat was her usual bubbly self.

"I can't wait to spend some time on the beach," she said. "Look at me, I'm so white I could star in a washing powder advert."

I hugged her tightly. "I've found a nice peaceful corner, right by the sea. And the waiters don't interfere with my life either. Not like in Egypt. Speaking of people interfering, how's Persephone?"

Kat and Mo had moved into my flat, but my sister popped over regularly to irritate them. Somehow, she was under the impression that Kat liked her.

"Actually, she's not been too bad these past couple of weeks. She's started dating her new boot camp instructor."

"Seriously? Since when does my sister like beefcake?" She'd always been into the tall, rich, and preppy type. Suits, button-down shirts, fat wallets—that sort of thing.

Kat shrugged. "I guess when he yelled at her to drop to her knees and give him five, she took it the wrong way."

"Well, as long as she's happy."

Persephone may have been the bane of my life, but I still wanted her to find a way of mending her broken heart.

Mo balanced on a leg and a crutch to give me a hug as well. His recovery was going well, but he still needed a little assistance from time to time.

"How are you feeling?"

"Much better, thank you. I'm still having physio every week, but it's not so painful now."

"That's great news."

"And it was very kind of Adam to send a jet for us. The seats were so much more comfortable."

Adam, Kat, and Mo had become good buddies. There was none of the awkwardness that had festered between her and Bryce, which certainly made life easier. When Adam heard they wanted to visit, he'd insisted on making the journey as painless as possible.

"Made it much easier to join the mile-high club, too," Kat whispered into my ear.

"Kat!"

She rolled her eyes. "What? Tell me you haven't."

Well, I could, but I'd be lying. Heat rose up my cheeks.

"I knew it!"

Time to change the subject...

"I told Gabe we'd meet him for dinner tomorrow. He's been looking forward to seeing you as well."

Adam had got Gabe a job as a diving consultant on his new movie. He said there was nobody he'd trust more to keep him safe underwater. And he'd made damn sure that Gabe had a work permit this time.

"I can't wait to see him. Is Adam coming too?"

"He said he was."

Even to my own ears, my voice sounded flat. Yes, Adam had said he was coming, but he'd cancelled our plans more than once recently.

"Callie, what's wrong? Is something up with Adam?"

"I'm just going to unpack," Mo said, then bolted from the room.

"He doesn't handle girl-talk very well," Kat explained. "It scares him. Now, tell me what the problem is."

Sometimes, there were downsides to being so close to someone. Kat knew something was wrong, and she wouldn't stop pressing until she'd pried the details out of me. I might as well get it over with.

"I'm worried Adam might be having an affair."

Her incredulous expression told me exactly what she thought of my suspicions.

"Why on earth would you think that?"

I told her about his last-minute changes of plan, his surreptitious phone calls, and his general evasiveness. Lately, he hadn't even mentioned our wedding. We'd discussed a few ideas, but that was ages ago, and I'd been so busy setting up the charity... Did he even want to get married anymore?

"Maybe it's something to do with work?" Kat suggested. "He could be in talks for a new movie."

"But what if he's cheating on me? Bryce did."

"Adam isn't Bryce."

"Don't I know it—Adam has beautiful women throwing themselves at him night and day. I've had to remove three pairs of panties from the hotel veranda already this week."

"You're beautiful. And Adam only has eyes for you—everyone can see it."

"But he's not here most of the time. And his co-star's stunning."

"She's also fifteen years older than him. And isn't she married?"

There was that, and she'd only ever been nice to me. But appearances weren't everything. She could be a cougar disguised as a Siamese.

"You think I'm overreacting, don't you?"

"I know you are."

But even though I wanted to trust Kat's judgement, I couldn't stop the worries from clouding my mind.

I'd planned to sit on the beach for a while the next morning, but like they had so many times over the last few months, events at the charity took over. A girl had gone missing in Thailand, and after speaking to her distraught parents, I mobilised my fledgling network to publicise her disappearance.

By the time social media the world over was doing its thing, I was so hungry I resorted to snarfing down a bar of chocolate and a packet of salted peanuts from the minibar because I couldn't wait until dinner.

Kat had checked in at lunchtime to see how I was doing and re-tweeted the details of the missing girl to the thousands of Twitter followers she'd gathered over the past few months. Now that the furore over her ordeal had died down and Mo was getting better, she wanted to get more involved with my work.

"I can stay and help if you want," she offered. "Mo will be okay on the beach by himself."

"Don't be silly—this is your holiday. I've had enough sun to last me for months."

"If you're sure."

"I am, absolutely. Now get back out there so Mo can top up your sunscreen."

As we got ready for dinner in Kat's villa, I received word that the teenager we'd been searching for had been found in a local hospital. One of the nurses had seen a tweet from her favourite pop star and recognised the unconscious patient who'd been brought in after a road traffic accident. It wasn't the best outcome we could have hoped for, but at least her parents could be with her now. I fired off a "thank you" message to the singer in question to let her know how much she'd helped and went through to Kat's bedroom. She was rummaging through her suitcase for a dress.

"I need to find something pretty. What if there are photographers?"

"You can make all the effort in the world, but they'll still manage to get a shot of you with your eyes closed or your mouth open."

I knew that because it had happened to me many, many times. Adam told me not to look at the gossip websites, but I couldn't help myself.

"They only make you miserable, baby," he said.

"I know, but it's worse knowing that people are gossiping about me without knowing what they're gossiping about."

Truthfully, the gossip was the least of my worries. Every day, I trembled as I checked for evidence of his suspected infidelity. And my fears only grew when he phoned me right before we were due to meet for dinner.

"Babe, we've been delayed again. One of Dana's false eyelashes fell off in the middle of a scene, so we have to go for a retake."

An eyelash? Really? I closed my eyes and leaned back against the wall.

"So you're going to miss dinner?"

"I'll make it up to you, I promise."

"I love you," I whispered.

"Love you too."

My heart stuttered as I hung up. How many more times would I hear him say that?

How long before he decided I was no longer good enough?
