While Kat's story has a happy ending, the events in Trouble in Paradise were based on a true story.

Shan Na died in the Egyptian town of Dahab in 2013, and for her, justice wasn't quite so swift. After her head was found in the desert, the wrong people were arrested - a foreign couple who were ultimately deported. Yes, the police really did hold them prisoner and make them look at the remains of the head.

It took years for a man to be jailed for Shan Na's murder, an Egyptian national, but was it the right man? Nobody knows. The legal system in Egypt is opaque to say the least. To this day, Shan Na's mother remains missing, and it seems doubtful that she'll ever be found. Their story serves as a stark reminder that paradise is sometimes an illusion.

Okay, enough of the bad stuff... 

Egypt is one of my favourite places in the world, and I'm lucky in that I've been able to spend a lot of time in Dahab, the town Fidda Hilal was based on. The weather's amazing, the people are lovely for the most part, and the diving is spectacular.
