8. Drop Off
"Anything?" Alan questioned, his head ducked into the open car door in order to somewhat keep his face shielded from the pelting storm outside. Amy clicked a few more buttons on the radio, searching for a signal. She found nothing, not even static. The electricity for both cars had entirely gone out, leaving the six visitors stranded outside the Tyrannosaurus enclosure with nothing but the pelting storm, dark jungle, and odd restroom shack to accompany them.
The woman shook her head and ran an exasperated hand through her long hair. "Nothing but dead air. Should we try following the trail next to the restrooms? See if it leads to a control room or something?"
"No, no!" Gennaro rushed, firmly shaking his head at the suggestion. "Let's just trust the professionals and stay put." Alan nodded, silently agreeing with the nervous man. Amy didn't much like the idea of sitting out in the middle of a tropical storm without power or radio signal, yet she supposed running off into said storm wouldn't be a very good idea either. So, she begrudgingly agreed as well.
Alan fixed his hat firmly over his hair, readying himself to dive back into the open rainfall. "Alright," he said with a curt nod. "I'll see what else I can do." With that said, Alan slammed the car door shut and quickly jogged back to his own vehicle where Malcolm waited.
Amy continued her search through the blank channels of the radio and she clicked random buttons, hoping something would miraculously happen. When that didn't work, she reached over the center console and tried turning the keys in the ignition. They wouldn't budge.
Suddenly, there was a "Boo!" from behind her, causing Amy, Lex, and Gennaro to all jump in surprise. Timmy's head appeared from the trunk of the car, laughing his boyish laugh while readjusting the odd green and yellow goggles he had placed on his head.
"Hey!" Gennaro snapped at the boy, annoyed by his startle. "Where did you find that?" Tim struggled a bit to properly adjust the headset as he crawled over the seats and back in place by his sister. The thing was obviously too large for his small head, yet that did little to ease his excitement.
"Big box under my seat!" he answered the lawyer while slipping the thick headset off, shaking his sandy hair from his eyes as he did so. Tim held the goggles out in front of himself and he inspected it with a beaming smile, proud of his neat discovery.
Gennaro wasn't impressed. "Are they heavy?"
"Yeah!"
"Then they're expensive. Put them back."
Tim's smile fell, the kid obviously hurt by the lawyer's harsh words. Amy glared at the man in turn. With little regard to Gennaro's warning, Amy turned to Tim and told him he could keep it. "Just be careful," she winked. Tim's face instantly brightened and he eagerly squeezed the goggles back into place on his face.
Lex took off her own hat and she hit her brother over the head with it, the blue fabric lightly bouncing off the boy's new helmet. "Don't scare me," Lex chastised. Before things could escalate, Amy quickly shot down the two bickering siblings. Lex crossed her arms and huffed, angrily turning her attention to the stormy night outside her window. Tim readjusted his goggles, stuck his tongue out at the back of his sister's head, then crawled back into the trunk. His irritation was soon gone when he made the new discovery that the goggles were night vision.
The next twenty minutes were spent with the group fighting against their boredom as they awaited the power to come back on. After a while, Tim had grown tired of the night vision goggles and he instead went to bug his sister. Amy tried to distract the two children by singing with Lex, but after a few songs had been sung and the children had their fill of pestering jokes over their singing abilities, boredom still came. Gennaro decided to take this newfound free time to catch up on some sleep. He now sat with his head resting against the glass of his door, his closed eyes wrinkling in annoyance whenever the other three got too loud. Lex had turned her attention to her own window, watching raindrops dribble down outside as she used her hat to fan herself rather than using it to hit her brother. Tim was still in the far back of the car. Him and Amy were now locked in a game of eye spy, both trying to keep their voices low so the agitated lawyer wouldn't wake.
"I spy something... green!"
"That's cheating," Amy laughed, biting her lip to muffle the sound. "The goggles show only green."
"Yeah, but I still spy it!" Amy only rolled her eyes at the boy, choosing to ignore this and instead continue with the game. She hummed in mild thought, searching around for her answer. Finally deciding on a random object near the restrooms, Amy opened her mouth to speak, yet a new and odd feeling stopped her.
The car bounced.
It wasn't a large bounce, more so like that of a short, rumbling shake. The woman paused, her brow scrunched as she waited in a sudden silence. It happened again and this time Amy could audibly hear the rumble. At first she thought it may have just been thunder from the storm, however, that didn't seem right to her. Thunder wouldn't make the car bounce like that, would it?
"Do you hear that-?"
Amy shushed Tim. The group waited in a thick anticipation, their ears perked and eager to pick up the new sound. When it happened again, goosebumps prickled across Amy's arms and her heart began pounding quicker. Whatever the sound was, it was becoming more frequent.
Tim clutched his goggles tightly in his small hands as he crawled back over the seats, trying his hardest to keep his movements soft and quiet. The realization that this situation was probably frightening to the kids came upon Amy. She turned in her seat, wanting to check if they were alright, but the words caught in her throat when she saw the look on their faces. Lex's and Tim's eyes were wide and confused, panic clearly beginning to set in. Tim gulped thickly and held up a small, shaking finger, pointing at something beyond Amy. Amy's brown eyes slowly followed to where the boy was pointing, coming upon her and Gennaro's cups of water positioned on the dashboard. Amy watched the cups, her eyes rounding in shock.
The water rippled within the plastic. It was still, then the surface ruffled again, perfectly in tune with the odd booms. They were quicker now, and closer, too.
Gennaro had awoken by this time. His own dark eyes were locked on Amy's face, trying to properly gage her reaction while also trying to make sense of the situation himself. "Maybe it's the power trying to come back on?" The man's voice was nothing more than a whisper, ominous and breathy.
"That's not the power," Amy mumbled back. Every muscle in her body tightened, tensing with every passing second. Her mind raced uncontrollably as her body prepared itself to run, yet she couldn't understand why. "Somethings not right."
"What is it?" whimpered Lex, her breathing beginning to increase. The terrified voice of Lex prickled at Amy's ears, a sick gnawing growing in the pit of her stomach. The woman felt a shift within herself as her mind went from that of fight-or-flight to protection mode, her natural instincts beginning to take over. She didn't know what was going on, but she knew it was bad and she knew she had to do something, anything, for the children.
Amy undid her seatbelt, preparing herself to exit the car. "I'm getting Alan and Ian. You guys stay here, I'm coming right back."
Suddenly, Tim gasped. "The goat's missing."
Amy froze.
Tim was now in the seat behind her, he's face glued to the glass and eyes unblinking as he stared. Lex and Gennaro were also both watching past her, looking out directly into the Tyrannosaurus enclosure, gaping in a perplexing bewilderment. Every inch of Amy was utterly on edge as time seemed to come to a shuttering slow. Her brown eyes flickered, suddenly not wanting to keep open as she forced her body to turn towards the wild jungle to her right. Amy blinked hard into the darkness, struggling internally with herself to actually build up the courage to look out the window. When she finally did, her heart plummeted from her chest cavity and down to her toes. The goat was gone, the only thing showing that it had ever truly been standing out there being the chain that now freely dangled from its tethering pole.
Lex whipped her head around, her chest heaving greatly as she searched the female paleontologist for answers. "Where's the goat?"
A loud, thick plop pounded against the ceiling. The four all jumped, their eyes snapping towards the sound. Directly above them, splattered against the Plexiglas sunroof of their car, was the mangled mess of the goat's leg. Through the sickening mix of falling raindrops and seeping blood that ran down the car in pink streaks, the four saw something else; something that was moving just beyond the electric fencing.
Lex gasped and curled herself against her door, trying to get as far away from the gory image that was now playing out before her. Towering outside in the pouring rain, standing hardly more than a few yards away from their car, was the Tyrannosaurus. It lifted its enormous head high against the dim moonlight, tossing the ruined body of the goat into the air before snapping its overwhelmingly powerful jaws shut around it, swallowing it whole. The beast let out a deep, guttural growl, one that the entire group could feel reverberating across the ground, in their car, and throughout their fragile bodies.
"Oh Jesus," Gennaro cried, the horrible sight sending him into a full panic. "Oh Jesus!" The driver's door opened and Gennaro stumbled out, incoherently muttering obscenities as he regained his footing against the slick mud. The remaining three could only watch on in horror as Gennaro disappeared off into the darkness of the rainy night, completely abandoning them without a second thought.
"He left us," Lex breathed, shock overruling every other thought inside her swirling head. "He left us."
There was a low, metallic creaking that echoed through the rhythmic sounds of the storm. Then, there were small pops as the electrical wires of the enclosure began to snap and break apart. The Tyrannosaurus grunted as it clutched the fencing within it's impossible jaws, tearing down its enclosure with only a few good shakes of its head, sending scraps of metal flying. It took a booming step forward, then another, the car shaking with every further step it took onto the road. Then, with one, long, echoing roar, the gigantic monster claimed her new territory, one that Amy, Lex, and Tim were now in.
Amy's entire being was flooded with an overwhelming feeling of terror, her mind going suddenly very numb as she battled with a realization her mind wasn't ready to accept.
It was... a Tyrannosaur.
A living, breathing, monstrous, towering Tyrannosaurus.
And it had just escaped its enclosure.
"Heilige Scheiße," Amy's lungs forced out the quiet, Germanic words, yet she couldn't understand them as her own. "Heilige Scheiße, das kann nicht passieren..."
There was a bright flash of white and Amy flinched, shielding away her eyes from the sudden light. "Was zur Hölle?" she snapped, still trying to see what was happening as the light zipped around the small space.
"Turn the light off!" Tim cried out. Only then did Amy take notice of the huge flashlight clutched within Lex's hands.
Amy lunged at Lex, her sweaty palms grasping out for the overly bright object. "Nein, Lex, nein!" She shouted, her frantic words spilling out as a confusing mix of both German and English in her panicked state. "Schalte das Licht aus! Schalte es aus! Turn the Licht aus! Off! Light aus!"
Lex only fumbled with the flashlight, desperately searching for the off button through her tears. The thundering footsteps began rushing at them, then, making the three completely freeze in place.
To their complete and true horror, when they all looked up and through the windows, they were met by the sight of the Tyrannosaurus standing directly beside their vehicle, next to the driver's side door. The very door Gennaro had left open. The creature's eyes followed the beam of light to where it disappeared into the far darkness. It began to take a step towards that direction, however, Tim suddenly jumped up from his spot and into the front seat, reaching for the door. Amy didn't have enough time to react before Tim grabbed the door handle and slammed it shut.
The monster outside snapped its head in their direction, a harsh growl escaping the startled creature. It eyed the car for a few seconds, sizing up what was surely an odd thing for the Tyrannosaurus. Then, it stepped forward, peering in its beady eyes curiously. It's head dipped low with its eyes scanning inside the front of the car where Tim and Amy were. Amy could only pray that Tim would stay still, for the vision of a Tyrannosaurus was based on movement.
After a few, painfully long seconds, the monster huffed and rose higher, giving the top of the vehicle a deep sniff and prodding it lightly with its nose. It did this a few times before lowering its head once again, this time towards the back of the car right next to where Lex sat, her flashlight still shining brightly against her chest. The thick skull of the dinosaur sank slowly, it's disturbingly yellowed eye appearing in the window and stopping to stare directly into Lex's light.
"Mach das verdammte Licht aus, Lex. Please," Amy whimpered, feeling tears begin to well up within her brown eyes. Her entire body was trembling so tremendously that she could hardly see straight. The Tyrannosaurus lifted its head high into the night and let out a terrible, grating roar that pierced through their three skulls like frozen knives of stone. They all jumped and covered their ears, trying to fight back the sudden piercing ringing that vibrated deep within their eardrums. Amy squeezed her eyes shut as tightly as she could, forcing tears to slowly dribble down her cheeks and she prayed to God that this wasn't actually happening. This couldn't possibly be happening!
Tim jumped into the back seat with his sister and Amy followed, both desperately yanking at the flashlight in Lex's hands as they shouted at her to once again turn it off. The poor girl could only cry and apologize as they all searched for the off switch through their jumbled hands.
The Tyrannosaur nudged the side of the car, forcing the vehicle onto only two wheels before letting it drop back down. The three trapped inside began screaming, shrieking out in pure terror as the dinosaur continued pushing and shoving their only safety barrier like a dog with a toy. It then reared its head back and slammed it down, driving its face into the sunroof.
The glass of the sunroof popped out of place and came crashing down with the head of the Tyrannosaur, smashing Amy, Lex, and Tim into their seat cushions as they shrieked with shattered voices. They held their arms and legs out in front of themselves, their adrenaline forcing their muscles to work against the incredible pressure of the glass as the Tyrannosaur tried forcing its way through and to them. It lifted its head, then slammed it back down, trying to destroy the only thing that was keeping the three alive.
Their hands slipped against the wet glass as they struggled to get a grip, their only clear sight being a dark, gaping mouth of razor teeth mere and simple inches away from their faces. Just when Amy thought she could keep her arms up no longer, the dinosaur stopped its assault on the window and instead went for the entire car once again. With one mighty slam of its head, the vehicle was sent toppling over. Amy felt her body slam into the door, then she was sliding down and onto her back, landing in a thick mixture of mud and glass. There was no time to recover as the Tyrannosaur stomped its heavy foot directly on the underside of the car, beginning its attack on the tires. This action caused the vehicle to sway and twist, digging itself deeper and deeper into the ground as it's sides buckled and crunched.
Amy sputtered and coughed through the screams muffled by mud, her mouth forming only one word as she cried out, "Alan!"
As suddenly as everything had happened, the vehicle stopped moving. Amy could make out the sounds of yelling from outside, yet she couldn't find herself caring, only relieved that the car had finally come to a stop.
Amy had been thrown under the passenger's seat, but it was easy enough to crawl through the mud and towards the two small kids, who were both trapped under the back seats. "Bist du in Ordnung? Huh?" She gasped, still trying to regain the air that had been knocked from her lungs as she ran her hands over the children's faces. She was trying to examine them and find any signs of harm, yet it was rather difficult to do as her body shook from its spike of adrenaline. "Are you hurt? Are you alright?" They didn't answer her. They couldn't. All the two small siblings could manage to do in that moment were cling themselves onto Amy, squeezing the woman as hard as their quivering bodies could manage. Amy hugged them in turn, muttering comforting words she hoped they could understand.
"Amethyst?"
At the call of her name, Amy began to sob. She couldn't help herself, everything just came flooding out of her as she met the eyes of Alan Grant. The man was hunkered down on his hands and knees, peering under the mass of mud and broken metal that had once been a vehicle. "Oh, Gott sei Dank!" Amy sobbed.
"It's alright, I'm here, I gotcha," he reassured them, his own voice trembling. Alan reached his arm under the bent metal doors, outstretching his hands for them to grab. Lex was the closest, so Amy pushed the girl into Alan's grasp. Once he got a firm hold of the young girl, Alan began to drag her out from under the sinking, destroyed vehicle and towards himself. Lex dug her way through the mud desperately, clawing her way to Alan and his safety. Once she was sure Alan had her, Amy began to reposition herself. Tim was hiding under her left arm and he had to get out next. Amy lifted herself up as much as she could and she ushered Tim to crawl after his sister, but the boy didn't move.
"I'm stuck," he grunted through gritted teeth, still trying to yank himself to safety. "The seat's got my feet!"
Amy glanced under her arm, seeing that the boy was indeed stuck under the head of the passenger seat and buried in deep mud. "Hold on, I got you." The space was tight and cramped, yet Amy was able to twist herself around. The woman plunged her hands into the mud as deep as she could and she dragged a handful to the side, ignoring the sharp scrapes and pokes of glass as she began to dig Timmy's feet out. Tim squirmed about, using his slow freedom of movement to try and slide himself out. However, the unexpected sound of a shrill scream made them both stop.
From what little openings they had from under the car, Amy and Tim were able to see the bodies of Alan and Lex huddled tightly together. They could also see the feet of the Tyrannosaur. Feet that were pointed directly at them.
Amy quickly hushed Tim's whimpering, her hands raking desperately at the muddy piles around Tim's legs. The car suddenly jerked, causing Amy to fall forward and land face-first into one of her piles of mud. The car jerked again, this time spinning side to side as the dinosaur outside continued its attack. The forced movement of the car dragged their cage against the ground, luckily releasing Tim from under the seat in the process. Immediately the boy scrambled to Amy's side. The woman pushed the boy away from her, shoving him towards the exit. And yet, to her horror, the crushed backside of the car was now nearly completely submerged in mud and their means of escape was now gone.
"What do we do?" Tim cried, his wide eyes wild and terrified. Amy's own eyes frantically searched for a new exit, yet every few seconds she found herself forced back into the mud as the car continued to thrash around.
Amy was tossed down again and her hands jerked up in order to shield herself from swallowing another face full of muck. The movement of the car stopped momentarily and she used these seconds to force herself up and she continued the search for an opening outside. As she looked about the broken car, she felt the cold mess of mud and water seeping around her, flowing towards the front of the car. Her eyes traced the movement, curiously watching as it began to pour out of the broken front windshield. At first, she was confused as to what was causing the flow. Then, the air was sucked completely from her lungs and she felt as though she would be sick.
"Oh my god," Amy rambled through short, erratic breaths. "Jesus Christ... Scheiße! It's pushing us over the cliff!"
"What?"
Amy was frantic, crying out a string of curses as she struggled for what to do. The car edged further and the opening was widened, displaying a small glimpse of the drop off into the Tyrannosaurus enclosure that awaited them. "Shit, shit, shit, shit!" Amy shifted through her scrambled mind. There had to be something she could do - something! Her rolling eyes came to a very sudden stop, right on the passenger's seat.
She had an idea.
"Timmy, come here!" She grabbed the boy, hauling his small body through the mud and towards the front seat. Once she made sure the boy would stay close by her side, Amy reached around the passenger's seat and snatched the seatbelt. With one great pull, she dragged the belt down and she buckled it into place. "I know this is gonna feel weird, but you're gonna have to trust me," she instructed, now picking up the boy and lifting him towards the seat. "Climb into the belt, Tim. Put it over your chest." The boy did so without question.
The belt that would normally fall across one's lap now hugged against Tim's small chest. With his added weight, the safety belt clicked and held him firmly in place. Amy grabbed Tim's ankles and shoved them under the piece of belt that was supposed to be around the chest. She then yanked harshly on the belt, tightly squeezing the boy in place just in time before the car lurched forward, knocking her down once again. When Amy was able to regain her barring and get back up, her head began to swim and she nearly fainted. The entire front end of the car was now hanging off the side of the steep cliff, dashboard, steering wheel and all. Tim screamed out for her and Amy was roughly brought back to reality. She still needed to secure herself.
The woman moved like a sudden hot wire had been placed inside her limbs. She ignored the large, gaping hole before her and she made the split decision to jump onto the bottom of the dashboard. Her body was slick and wet and she began to slip, but she dug her fingernails into the smashed underside and she pulled herself up to safety against the floorboards.
Amy was panting heavily, the thought of what she had to do next causing her to nearly stay put. She wanted nothing more than to curl up against the underside of the car and simply wait for whatever would happen next, yet she knew that would surely lead to her death. She couldn't leave Tim like that.
Amy held in her breath and she forced herself up, every ounce of her muscles begging her to stop as they quivered. She reached her body over the growing gap to the ground below, her soaked hands grappling for the driver's side seatbelt, begging herself not to look down. Once in hand, Amy dragged the belt across the seat and towards the buckle. The metal and plastic fumbled against one another, scraping mockingly as she searched for the buckle opening. The car bounced forward another few inches and she stumbled, nearly losing her balance.
Amy begged and prayed, hot tears pouring down her pale cheeks as she miserably tried forcing the two objects together. "Please, please, please..." She felt a small click, the buckle settling in place within the button. She let out an exasperated cry of relief.
The woman then drug her hands around the seat itself, her nails clawing at the slick polyester. Once she had her arms gripped around as best as she could, Amy bear hugged the material tightly, pressing herself against the seat as she steadied her footing on the steering wheel, which, thankfully, appeared to have been stuck in place. With her balance settled, Amy forced out a few calming breaths through her mouth, struggling through her intensifying terror to actually let go. The car dropped again, and she was moving.
Using her left arm, Amy began pulling at the seatbelt. She had to remind herself not to pull too hard so that the belt wouldn't lock. Thankfully, it extended smoothly, allowing her to squeeze her head under. As she was pulling her right arm through, the car jolted forward and she lost her stance. Amy's feet slipped out from under her and she fell.
The woman's scream choked in her throat as the belt snagged around her right armpit and chin, leaving the rest of her body to dangle. She could feel herself moving, her wet skin slowly squeezing out from under the safety belt as her body weight dragged her down. Amy began to struggle, kicking her feet out blindly for solid ground. Her toe slipped into the steering wheel and she pushed. Amy's body racked with her terrible sobs as she stood on shaky legs, her feet finally finding their place back against the wheel.
Amy wasted no time in forcing her free arm under the belt, using her feet to squeeze herself against the seat as her elbows forced the belt to tighten around her chest. Then, she kicked off the steering wheel. The sudden lack of support caused her to drop forward a few inches, yet the belt quickly locked, stopping her from fully falling. With the belt now locked, Amy placed her feet on the steering wheel and she kicked off again, forcing the belt to constrict around her like a snake, firmly clutching her in place. Then, she wiggled her feet under the second belt, locking them in as well.
Amy and Tim were now dangling in upside down car seats in an overturned vehicle, watching as the car inched further and further across the edge. With a single, booming roar from the Tyrannosaur outside, the car was fully pushed over the edge with one last great jolt, sending the two screaming down the cliff and into the enclosure. Everything went black once they hit the trees.
