Chapter 1
Adrian's POV
Black Creek Louisiana. When the idea first came up I wasn't so sure about moving, I mean why did the house have to be in the middle of nowhere? But seeing it now, this town isn't what I thought it would be at all... It's worse!
The people are somewhat hostile, and everywhere you turn there seems to be another abandoned or condemned building. The town was an old rural mining town, the mine shut down in the early 20th century after a fire tore through it.
What happened here, and WHY would my grandmother have left me property here?
Larissa and I had packed up our whole lives on a whim when we got the news, but finally being here I think that maybe this was a bad idea. Despite the town being a letdown, the house was incredible.
I've always wanted to live in one of these old Plantation style houses, and this for me, makes the move all the more worthwhile. While Larissa heads inside the house with the estate manager to look around, I decide to walk around the property and really get a good look at where we will be living. It's scary to think this is it. This is the home Larissa and I will be spending our lives in.
The house is rickety and old, its faded creme paint is starting to peel and the exterior seems to have been overexposed to the sun. I know I'll have to spend some time fixing it up. The house is surrounded by a thick forest that seems to lurk and create a dark miasmic aura. I'm not getting the best feeling from the house, but I believe that sooner or later this home will be perfect to both of us.
Walking around the side of the eerie home, I spot an opening with two doors leading into the side of the house. It was shuttered off and chained shut with a second lock added to one of the doors. Taking a closer look, I kneel down to study the lock. Wherever these doors lead, someone made sure they couldn't be opened without a struggle. If they didn't want this opened from the outside, maybe it was accessible on the inside.
I decide that now is a good a time to go inside and look around the interior of the house ; I really want to find out where those doors lead. As I start to wander back toward the front of the house I happen to notice someone standing on the outskirts of the woods behind the house. Making my way towards where she is standing, I can't help but notice how the sunlight glints off her golden locks, making her look ethereal in a way. Finally, I come to a stop in front of her and I can see that she has bright luminous blue eyes framed by thick, mascara filled, lashes, making them look even more exotic against her sun-kissed skin.
"Hi, I'm Adrian. My wife Larissa and I just moved into the neighborhood, do you live around here?"
The girl looks me over before calmly holding out her hand to shake mine, "I'm Paige, I live in the next house over, but you can't see it through the woods."
She pauses when I take her hand in mine, "I heard new people were moving in, it's nice to meet you." The smile that appears on her face is a nice change from the angry, distrustful, looks we've been getting since we rolled into town.
"So tell me, why is everyone in this town so unfriendly?" Paige throws her head back laughing,
"Oh you know how small towns are, everyone knows everyone so when someone new comes to town they get pretty suspicious. It has always been an oppressive town, but I wouldn't worry."
When she looks at me again there is laughter still dancing in her eyes, "I'm sure it will all calm down as soon as they get to know you." I let out a little chuckle despite myself, "That's good to know. I was starting to think maybe it had something to do with us. If it's normal then I'll try not to let it bother me so much." As a comfortable silence settles between us I turn once again to survey the house until I feel her hand on my arm as she asks in a quiet voice, "So, what do you think of your new home?" Turning to look behind me I answer, "I haven't decided yet. I know it needs a lot of work, but I'm sure once the work is done the house will start to grow on me."
I slowly turn back to face Paige and hold out my hand, "It was lovely to meet you Paige, but I'm afraid I must go and check on my wife now. I want to make sure she is happy with the house." Paige looks down at my hand and gently takes it in her grasp, "Likewise, and I hope you both are very happy here. It's not often we get fresh faces. I would hate for the townspeople to run you off just yet." We finish shaking hands and part ways, her heading back into the woods, and myself shuffling towards the house.
Larissa's POV
The estate lawyer keeps talking about the inheritance and papers that still need to be signed by Adrian. I turn a deaf ear to what he is saying; My mind starts to drift away to something else, and my heart did as well. I roam around the house and my feet lead me to the stairs. With every step I climb, a creepy feeling slowly seeps through my body, and with the last flight of stairs it hovered over me completely, filling every corner of my soul.
I stand at the beginning of a long hallway. Taking a deep breath and filling myself with courage, I make my very first step into the corridor. I drift to the first room, placing my hand lightly on the doorknob.
"Larissa," A sudden abrupt voice makes me jump in my place.
"The Fuck, Adrian. You scared the shit out of me." Adrian chuckles and makes his way towards me, taking me in a soft embrace, "Hey baby, I'm sorry," he whispered through my hair as he kisses my head and runs his hands lightly over my shoulders. I welcome the warmth of his arms around me as my heart beats frantically in my throat.
"This feeling is just an illusion," I whisper to my inner self, closing my eyes.
