The Last Scrapbook
At the Pop library, Poppy was in the middle of showing McJagger, Holly, Laguna, and Aggie her ultimate favorite Pop troll fantasy scrapbook series: The Glitterborn Chronicles. It was about the tales of fellow heroine Lady Marigold, who was on a mission to reclaim a precious time called the Party Hat of Destiny, stolen by the evil Madam Maelstrom. Holly looked at Poppy in confusion, saying, "Sounds...complicated," as McJagger chuckled, saying, "But behind all the complexity, you get a savvy storyline and some sweet sights for the eyes." Aggie commented, "Wow, Poppy. Usually, I'm not one for scrapbooks considering they have changed our history so much. But you seem to like this series a lot." Poppy nodded and exclaimed, "I do, and yes, I know it is a little complicated. But not to worry, guys! Author R. T. Plumegrass wrote a dense companion anthology to explain it all." Poppy placed a huge book on the table, much to her friends' shock, as Poppy commented, "Though R. T. Plumegrass is only the pen name, the author's actual identity is actually a baffling mystery." Aggie's eyes lit up in excitement as she asked, "A mystery, you say? Is it one that requires solving," as she placed on her rainbow cowgirl hat, with Laguna asking, "Do you carry that with you all the time"? The Magical Musical troll shrugged and replied, "Well, you never know." Poppy's response was, "Maybe not at the moment, Aggs, but someday, I do want to meet the author because I love the book series so much! Woo-hoo! Isn't it great"? Holly had her hands up in nervousness, saying, "Y'all! Y'all"!
Then, Poppy saw Melody entering the library, saying, "Hey, my musical pals! What's happening here? Uh...Poppy. Why does Holly look like she forgot to RSVP for something"? McJagger replied, "See, Poppy was telling us about her favorite scrapbook series: The Glitternborn Chronicles, but I don't think Holly seems to understand it very well." Melody chuckled while taking a seat next to Poppy and putting her feet up on the table, saying, "Well, it is a popular series, but not all trolls seem to understand its concept well, and if you mention the author, then that's going to leave then baffled for days." Aggie then commented, "Wow, Melody. You seem to know a lot about the book. Are you a fan"? Melody replied, "Well, I like the series, but I wouldn't call myself a fan of it. However, I do know one troll who is a huge fan of the series. Probably even more than you, Poppy." Hearing that made Poppy become really excited as she asked, "You do?! Who is it"?! Everyone listened in anticipation as Melody placed her hands behind her head, saying, "You are all going to be pretty "shocked" once I tell you who. But, Poppy, if you open the book again, I think you'll find something in there that says it all." Poppy opened the book up and saw, on a particular page, there was a golden bookmark. Poppy picked it up as Holly asked, "What in tarnashun is it"? Laguna adjusted her glasses before saying, "It appears to be a bookmark, one shaped like a guitar of some sort." Aggie then piped in, mentioning, "It's an electric guitar, guys. That must mean...oh-ho-ho,"! A huge grin appeared on her face, with Holly, McJagger, Poppy, and Laguna turning to face her, asking, "Who is it"?!
Back at Rock hollow, Val was reading a purple Glitterborn Chronicles book while sitting on the lounge couch. Once she was finished, she closed the book and hugged it close to her, smiling and sighing in content. Suddenly, Val became startled when Poppy appeared from the couch, shouting, "Val Thundershock likes Glitterborn Chronicles"! As everyone else appeared from behind the couch and stood next to Poppy, Melody took a picture of Val's startled reaction before commenting, "I am so keeping this"! Val tossed the book aside and shouted, "Oh heck no," as she lept and tried to grab the photo, but missed as Melody ran from her, laughing in content, while everyone watched in amusement. While chasing Melody, Val commented, "No, I don't like it! I only like stuff that's hardcore! Melody, get back here"! Melody quickly scaled up a stalactite as she shouted, "Liar, liar! Your skirt's on fire! Just tell them, and you'll be inspired! Hahahaha"! Val tried to climb after her as McJagger stated, "It's cool, Val. We think it's pretty groovy that you like series. We won't judge you or think of you any different." Val kept reaching for Melody, who kept moving side to side to dodge, while the rock ambassador commented, "It's not for reading. I got that book to...prop up my wobbly table. Melody Song, for the love of rock, give me that photo"! Melody smirked and dangled the photo in front of Val, who swiped at it but missed and ended up landing on the couch again, the book flying and landing on her stomach. Melody broke into laughter before losing her balance and fell, crashing into McJagger, Holly, and Aggie, making them fall with her. They groaned in pain as Aggie commented, "Man, that's going to leave to some unflattering bruises in the morning."
Melody, Holly, and McJagger groaned in agreement as Poppy and Laguna helped them up, with Val taking the opportunity to snatch the photo and immediately ripped it up before crossing her arms and replying to Poppy, "So yeah, not a fan of the book series." Poppy smiled and raised her eyebrow at Val, who could only hold on so long before admitting, "Yeah, ok. I'm totally obsessed with it." Poppy became excited again as she asked Val, "What?! When?! How?! Say things,"! Holly replied, "Poppy, give thay ...err gerl ayy moment ta say something"! Val sighed before responding, "It all started when I was looking for a new book to help me get my head around a new solo I've been working on. I found this book and first thought it said Guitar Brain Chronicles. I was about to put it back when something called out to me." Aggie thought for a minute as she asked, "Was it the Madam Maelstrom character"? Val nodded while Laguna replied as she wrote in her notepad, "The subject appears to be interested in the series mostly due to the actions and presence of the opposing antagonist." Val then continued with, "And ever since, I haven't stopped reading it. Melody's interested in it too, but not as much as I am, though I was hoping to avoid something like a wild picture chase to occur," as she playfully glared at her younger cousin, who smirked and playfully retorted, "To be fair, with your reaction, you were kind of asking for it. Right, Evie,"? Val looked up and saw that in the corner of the lounge room, Evie was using a video camera and recording the interaction, responding as she stopped the recording, "All thewe, big sissy." Val facepalmed while Melody snickered silently as the rock ambassador let out a small chuckle, saying, "Well-played. But so that you know, I am so getting you back for this."
Melody smiled and rolled her eyes, saying, "Oh no. I am shaking in my sneakers. What on earth could the great and powerful Val do to an innocent soul like me," which made everyone break into laughter. Evie joined up with the group and hopped onto Melody's head after giving her the video camera while Aggie commented, "Wow. Val, do you know what this means? You and Poppy can share your passion for Glitterborn together." Poppy jumped up while shouting, "I wanna squeal! Do you wanna squeal"? Val shook her head before saying, "Sorry, Popsqueak. Don't wanna squeal," as she sat and returned to reading her book. McJagger then asked, "So, what has to be your favorite part of the series, Val"? Val looked up and replied, "Oh, that's easy. The heroine: Madam Maelstrom." Everyone's jaws dropped, except for Melody and Evie, as the baby troll said, "Uh oh," while Melody added, "You said it, girl." Aggie then spoke up, saying, "Uh, I thought Lady Marigold was the heroine and Madam Maelstrom was the bad guy. Or did I get something mixed-up"? Poppy shook her head before saying, "No, Val. The heroine is Lady Marigold. She has the compassion, bravery, and the inspiring line: May the shimmer of glitter brighten your day, and the sparkle inside you show you the way." Holly's eyes widened in joy as she stated, "so inspiring," with Aggie adding, "It's like those words lit a light inside of me that makes me want to puke rainbows of happiness and love." Melody slightly gagged before saying, "Hearing that almost makes me wanna puke something...but no rainbows."
Val laid back and responded with, "Boo. Maelstrom's got the cunning, the edge, and her dragon keeps the realm on its toes," before sighing in happiness. Evie made the rock gesture, shouting, "Dwagons are awesome," as Melody commented, "I mean, from both perspectives, it's pretty good. Though the background storylines can be a real tangle to unknot." Holly added, "Yeah, and ay'm still baffled by that awful cunning mystery. Woah, ay need to lie down. Ay'll catch y'all later," as Holly began to leave. Meanwhile, Poppy was freaking out as she exclaimed, "No, no, no, no! I finally find someone who is also interested in Glitterborn, and you're rooting for the villain"?! Aggie got a hold of Poppy's shoulders and shook her, saying, "Get a hold of yourself! You're starting to sound crazy"! As Poppy stopped to catch her breath, McJagger stepped forward, stating, "If I may have a word, ladies. It doesn't really matters which characters you root for in a good book. What matters most is how the story makes you feel." Poppy and Val looked at him before arguing, "hero/villain" at one another before screaming in frustration. Melody pinched her eyes before saying, "Can we please not make this into a huge argument? The last thing we need is another brawl-fest like what happened at Country Corral a couple of weeks ago." Val sighed before replying, "It's hopeless, Melly. Even though Poppy and I like the same book, we can't get on the same page, no pun intended. Now, I'm going to check out book seven...alone. Catch you guys later." Everyone looked at one another in distress, as Poppy commented, "But Val, there is no book seven."
That made Val stop dead in her tracks as she commented, "Say that again." Aggie spoke up, saying, "Unfortunately, the series does not have an ending. apparently, the author never wrote a book that told us the ending to this tale." Val was silent for a bit as McJagger asked, "Uh...Val? You doing alright,"? Still facing away from her friends, Val pointed her finger up and said, "Excuse me a bit," before pulling out her guitar. Melody seemed to know what she was about to do as she exclaimed, "Everyone, cover your ears, quick! It's about to get loud"! Everyone placed their hands over their ears, except for Evie, who watched in curiosity as Val began to play her guitar extremely loud while screaming with the music. While the group cringed in pain from how loud the sound was, Evie winced as she then let out a loud cry that made everyone shout in pain, especially Val, who stopped and heard her younger, younger cousin crying. While this kept on, Melody exclaimed, "That's the only thing louder than Val's guitar scream playing! Evie's crying"! This kept up for about a minute before someone finally stood up to stop this madness from getting too extreme. Laguna cupped her fingers and did a loud whistle to get their attention before saying, "Well, while this debate is one of great interest to you both, might I suggest an alternative solution? Perhaps to help settle this conflict, why don't we go find the author and ask him ourselves"? Everyone looked at Laguna and thought about it as Poppy and Val nodded, saying, "Great idea"! McJagger kissed Laguna on her cheek while commenting, "Genius plan, Laguna," as the Techno Troll blushed and smiled in gratitude. Aggie tipped her rainbow cowgirl hat before saying, "Looks like we have an author to hunt. And luckily for you guys, Detective Assistant Aggie will be accompanying you." Evie pulled out a guitar and shouted, "Hooway! Woad trip," before slamming the tiny guitar on Melody's head, making Melody wince in pain before saying, "Warn me next time before you decide to smash your guitar on my head, Evie"?
Val then jumped onto a huge rock before saying, "So, we're going to go hunt down the author R. T. Plumegrass and find out once and for all who gets to wear the Party Hat of Destiny! Let's go,"! Poppy then asked, "Uh, just one question. How are we going to do that? I've scoured through all of her books, and none of them give off any clues towards her real identity." Aggie then thought for a minute before saying, "Maybe, we need to look at things a little differently." Outside, Aggie had a whiteboard with a picture of every pop troll in the village as she stated, "So, as we know, here are all the pop trolls who call this place home. Poppy has informed me that the author is someone from Peppy's generation. So, we can eliminate these trolls," as she took down a couple of pictures, leaving those of the older trolls in the village. Then, Laguna picked up one of the books and looked at the pictures before saying, "According to this book, looking at the scissor cuts, it seems that the angle and trajectory suggests a left-handed scrapper. so, we can eliminate any right-handed trolls." As Aggie took down more photos, about six photos were left on the board. Then, McJagger stated, "Oh! I just remembered! I found a small strand of what might be the author's hair trapped between the scrapbook tape." He pulled out a small bag that held the hair sample as Poppy looked at it, saying, "But without other hair samples to compare it to, it's useless." Aggie took the bag and looked at it closely, saying, "Hm...I felt like I've seen this color before. But where,"?
Melody then got a great idea as she gave Evie to Val, saying, "Watch her for a minute? I will be right back." Melody rushed somewhere before coming back with a huge bag. She dumped out its contents, revealing to be used hairbrushes with small locks of multi-colored hair on them. Everyone looked astounded as Melody explained, "I asked the remaining trolls if I could borrow their hairbrushes for detective work. When I mentioned the name Aggie, they were more than willing to help. So, this should give us all the samples we need." Evie exclaimed, "Ooh! So many," as Val smiled, commenting, "Great idea. It sounds like something I'd do. Now, let's get looking." Everyone began to pick up a hairbrush and inspected the locks of hairs attached to them. After a while, Aggie took down a photo of Sky Toronto before saying, "We've been able to eliminate every troll, but one. So, it looks like our author is none other than..." before gasping in shock, making everyone crowd around her to see the photo. Soon, they were by the docks talking to farmer Rufus, who said happily, "Me? Rufus? One of them hoity-toity book scrappers? Hoo-Hoo! Can you imagine? Ol' Rufus a-cuttin, and a-pastin' and a hoo-hoo-hoo! Wouldn't that be something"? Poppy looked down and said, "Yeah, we're sorry, Rufus," as Aggie stated, "It doesn't make sense. His hair matched the sample we had, so if he is not the author, then who is"?
Melody then seemed to catch something as she said, "Hold up. Poppy, maybe...you don't know Rufus for all that he is." Poppy looked at her in confusion, asking, "What do you mean, Melody? I know all of my friends, and I've never seen Rufus take an interest in scrapbooking." Melody explained, saying, "Maybe not while you're around, but...what if he's keeping it secret? We just need to see if we can...lure him into admitting." Laguna wrote this down as she stated, "The subject appears to be right. Perhaps Rufus is the troll we are looking for but is too afraid to admit it out loud." McJagger then commented, "Right on. So, how do we get him to say it"? Val thought for a minute as Evie hopped down from Val's head and walked to Rufus, asking, "Wufus, I was wondewing. What comes aftew: May the shimmew of glitterw bwighten youw day"? Rufus chuckled before patting Evie on the head, replying, "It's: And the sparkle inside you show you the way." Rufus then covered his mouth when he realized what he said, leaving everyone to turn around and gasp in shock. Evie made her eyes widened to look cute as she innocently said, "Thank you, Wufus," before going back to the group and taking her place on Melody's head. Rufus for nervous as he replied, "Uh, I mean. Have a ding-dong hootenany humdinger as the crow flies, two in the bushes...gotta go"!
Val chuckled as Melody high-fived Evie while saying, "Nice one, Evie," as the baby rock troll replied, "All it takes is a little ingenuity." Aggie used her hair to catch Rufus and bring him back towards the group as Poppy stepped forward, saying, "Rufus! You are the alias R. T. Plumegrass"?! Rufus replied, "Aw shucks, Poppy. you're half-right." Everyone became confused as McJagger asked, "Half-right? You mean there's another part of the story we're missing"? Rufus nodded before explaining, "I did scrap the Glitterborn Chronicles. but the truth is, it is Rufus who is the alias." He then got up and took off his hat, making his usually flat hair stand up, his plow became a cane, and he was now wearing glasses and a purple suit with a yellow bowtie. His voice even changed as he now said in what resembled a British accent, "My real name is R. T. Plumegrass." Everyone's jaws dropped as Melody silently commented, "Holy trolls." R. T. Plumegrass then went on to explain, "See, when I first snipped Glitterborn, I was young, inventive, and full of fun and creative ideas. I enjoyed getting to create fun stories, memorable characters, and a setting where even the most mundane scholars can feel like a young imaginative soul at heart. However, when the time came to create an ending for this series, the scissors became very still. With that, I decided to quit, and I left the world of Glitterborn behind. I created a new persona, new clothes, and even a new voice to try and forget my past. Henceforth, giving birth to my Rufus alias."
Aggie then asked, "So, you left this behind because you had scrapbooker's block and was unable to come up with an ending"? R. T. Plumegrass nodded before saying, "Tis true, dear Master." Everyone felt bad for him, as Poppy commented, "Oh, there's gotta be something we can do to help"! McJagger then spoke up, saying, "Wait a minute. Why don't we all help you write an ending"? Melody smiled as she commented, "McJagger, that's a great idea! Aggie, Laguna, McJagger, and I worked together before to make a book. So, why don't we all work together to make an ending"? R. T. Plumegrass seemed to like this idea as he said, "Jolly good! Very well, then we shall write a most wondrous ending together." Poppy got excited as she said, "I want to squeal, guys! Do you wanna squeal"? Most of her friends nodded in agreement as Val looked at them before saying, "Okay, but only once." Everyone squealed in unison before they stopped, with Val commenting, "Let us never speak of this again," as Evie replied, "Doubt it, Val." Aggie got out a pen and some paper, saying, "I can take care of writing the ending down. Besides, I'm not one for creating scrapbooks anyway. I'm more of a realistic story writer than a fantasy scrapbook maker. Why don't you guys work on the scrapbooking portion"? Poppy got out art supplies while saying, "Okay. Here's how I think the ending should go," as she began cutting away at some construction paper. In Poppy's version, Lady Marigold and Madam Maelstrom met in the Confetti Fields. And just as Maelstrom prepares her dragon to attack, Lady Marigold draws forth the Party Blower of Legend, which is a magical noisemaker. It makes a sound so magical with one blow, and it makes Maelstrom changes all of her ways. Now, a lot nicer, she gives Lady Marigold the Part Hat of Destiny. however, during her explanation, Val interrupted, saying, "But of course, that would be a terrible ending."
Then, Val added that Madam Maelstrom was waiting all this time for her version of the ending for Lady Marigold to let her guard down. She places it on her head, destroys Glitterborn, and it never exists again. Poppy was in disbelief, but before she could retort about how bad the ending sounded, Melody spoke up, saying, "Okay, hold up! Hold everything for one minute." Behind her, McJagger was holding onto the box of art supplies as Laguna turned on a stopwatch to time him as Melody facepalmed and replied, "I did not mean literally, guys. It was only an expression." Both trolls let out a small chuckle as Laguna commented, "But either way, it's a thought experiment on determining the average strength of a quadruped funk troll." McJagger replied, "And I'm lucky to be part of such a thought experiment." Melody then turned back to Val and Poppy, saying, "That aside, although it does look like fun, can you two not bring up this argument again? Look, I get it. You both have different views on who you believe is the heroine. In fact, now that I think about it, maybe "THIS" is why the book series was never finished, to begin with." Poppy and Val looked at one another before turning to R. T. Plumegrass, with Poppy asking, "Is that true"? R. T. Plumegrass nodded, saying, "Yes. The frustrations and arguments that many trolls had based on who they thought should win the end made me feel pressured and stressed out, which made me lose interest in finishing the series."
Aggie then came over, saying, "Maybe instead of only relying on your opposing views and opinions about who you think should win, maybe you both can try and combine what you like about the story and make an ending that best suits both fantasy worlds"? Laguna then commented, "Aggie is stating a possible theory, girls. Maybe it will benefit you both of you create an ending that consists of Poppy's friendship theme while pertaining to Val's desired edginess." Evie even wanted to join in, saying, "Yeah! Teamwowk! Make both endings into one supa-mega-thwillaw ending"! McJagger then added, "Besides, it's like what I said before. What makes a good story feel great is how it makes you real, no matter where you stand or what characters you root for." Melody mentioned, "And you know what? Maybe seeing how the other troll enjoys the same series can make you understand them a little better. and even like their perspective on things." Poppy and Val thought about it for a minute before Poppy said, "Well, now that I think about it, despite not letting Lady Marigold win, your idea of having her guard let down...is actually pretty creative." Val smiled and replied, "Really? Huh. You know, Popsqueak? Maybe having a little friendship isn't necessarily a bad thing. It's...kind of nice, actually." Poppy then got a great idea as she whispered it to Val, whole her friends and R. T. Plumegrass watched in anticipation. After about another minute of whispers, they whispered their idea to Aggie, who began writing it down. She gave Poppy the now written piece of paper, gave it to Plumegrass, and Poppy stated, "Ok, Mr. Plumegrass. Here is our new idea for the ending." They both started to explain how, for this ending, they propose that Lady Marigold and Madam Marigold join forces and work together. R. t. Plumegrass thought about it before saying, "It's heartfelt but edgy. The ending ambiguous yet satisfyingly complete. It's perfect! I shall begin scrapbooking it at once"!
Everyone cheered and celebrated as McJagger commented, "Alright, alright, alright. So, now that you have an ending, you can return to being R. T. Plumegrass," with Laguna adding, "And create more stories," while Evie shouting, "More stories! More Stories"! R. T. Plumegrass thought about it before saying, "What you speak of is true. Still, you know, I've grown fond of being Rufus throughout the years. I find it to be a more comfortable persona and easier to act out. no, if you shall excuse me," as he changed back into his Rufus persona and spoke in his hillbilly accent, "I got some snippety-snip-snippin' to get to." He left to get started right away as Melody commented, "Well, I don't know about you guys, but now, I feel like creating another book now. Maybe we can do a mystery novel, this time"? McJagger, Laguna, and Aggie nodded in agreement as Aggie added while tipping her cowgirl hat, "Yeah! And we can add a plot twist! Something surprising that no one will expect." Laguna mentioned, "With a suspense-increasing timeline that will have every troll's hair on edge"! McJagger chuckled and replied, "Then, let's get writing and creating," as the small group sat by the box of art supplies and got right to work. Meanwhile, Poppy asked Val while rubbing her arm, "I don't suppose you have a few hours to talk about book five"? Val responded, "No. We have to start at book one"! With that, Val and Poppy began a friendly discussion about the book as behind them, an imaginary Lady Marigold and Madam Maelstrom watched and held hands together in friendship before disappearing again, excited to be a part of a great ending.
