Buckin' Branch
Everything seemed to be nice and quiet as the sun shined over another beautiful day in Trollstopia. However, the silence was broken by a frightened Biggie, who was horrified that his beloved pet worm, Mr. Dinkles, was hanging on for dear life on a tree branch. Biggie cried out, "Somebody help him," as the one troll who heard his pleas for help was Branch. He grabbed his cup of cocoa and said to the waiter, "Looks like I'm going to have to take my cocoa to go-go"! He ran to the tree and rode on a nearby cart while Dinkles was close to slipping off and falling towards his flat and grassy doom. Mr. Dinkles then let go and started to fall, but in the nick of time, Branch caught the worm with his hair and landed safely on the ground, asking Mr. Dinkles, "Are you ok"? While he got silence as a response, a blink told him that he was alright. He gave the worm back to Biggie, who said, "Oh, thank you, Branch! You saved him," as he left while scolding Mr. Dinkles on climbing trees with its teeth. His rescue attempt was noticed by Holly, who was accompanied by Gust and Buckaroo, as she commented, "Well, dang y'all! Hoo! We come here ta get our cocoa ta go-go, ayn' the next thing ay know, this here cutie-patooie's a-doin' the finest critterwrangling this side ov Lonesome Flats"! Branch blushed as he said, "Well, thank you, Holly, but remember what I told you about the "cutie-patooie" thing? Now that I'm engaged, you need to be careful saying that." Buckaroo chuckled as she said, "She knows, saddle boy. She just means that there y'all got some awful fine wrangling skills. We haven't seen moves like that there since the last polkabull stampede."
Branch scratched the back of his head as he said, "Me? I don't know, guys." Gust commented, "Don't be so modest, Branch. you got something special." At the sound of the word special, Branch felt a sudden sense of admiration he hasn't felt in a long time as he asked, "Me? Special"? The Country Trio nodded as Gust stated, "I know it in my gut, and I always listen to my gut." Suddenly, Gust's gut started to rumble as Buckaroo tipped her hat, saying, "Boy, that there's ayy genius idea! Branch, how would ya like ta try out faw our Country Corral rodeo"? Holly smiled, saying, "Gust's gut, y'all are the mowst insightful indigestive system ay have evuurr had the pleasure ov a-knowin'"! Gust then asked Branch, "What do you say, Branch? Care to try out,"? Branch was still speechless about this opportunity as he asked, 'You really think I can do it"? Gust's gut rumbled again, leaving him to say, "Does that answer your question"? While Branch was a little confused, "Buckaroo clarified things by saying, "That there means yes. See ya there, cowboy." As Holly, Buckaroo, and Gust left, Branch thought about this and decided to give the rodeo a try.
At Country Corral, Poppy, Smidge, and Aggie, who was wearing her rainbow cowgirl hat, were bringing pendants over for every troll to wave at the rodeo. Smidge commented, "Nice pendants, Poppy," as the Pop Queen replied, "Well, I figure nothing says "Branch, we wish you success in the rodeo"! like a good pendant." As the pendant shot out glitter and streamers, Smidge mentioned, "And there's no way they'll ever get annoying"! Aggie added, "Yeah, and I know that he is going to do great. If this silver horseshoe I am wearing on my hoof for good luck means anything," as she showed Poppy a silver, shining horseshoe that was on the bottom of her orange hoof. As Smidge and Poppy oohed and aahed at how pretty it looked, Aggie continued with, "It means that I think Branch is one lucky troll today." Suddenly, a familiar voice spoke up, saying, "Looks like y'all three are pretty excited." Everyone turned and saw that Delta Dawn was behind them as Aggie jumped up and said excitedly, "Delta, what are you doing here"? Delta happily replied, "Whel, y'all know ay ken't miss ayy darn good rodeo. So, since ay heard that it was a-happenin' here this year, ay thought ay'd make ayy day ta come by ayn' see it, but ay didn't think ay'd be running into you three. Ayn' unless ay'm mistaken, did ay hear that Branch was gonna try out"? Everyone nodded as out of Delta's huge auburn hair, Clampers, her niece, popped out, saying, "It's gonna be so cool a-seein' Branch try out. It'll be funnier than ayy barrel ov beetles."
Suddenly, Branch spoke up, saying in his impression of what sounded like a country accent, "Well, well." When everyone turned to spot him, Branch leaned against a pole, wearing a hilarious cowboy costume. He had on a white hat that had an arch in the front, a white vest over a beige tank top, a red bandanna, a dark brown belt with a white button buckle, and long brown pants. Poppy's jaw dropped as her cheeks flushed red. Smidge commented in a stunned voice, "Oh my guh," while Clampers was rolling on the ground, laughing. Delta commented, almost in concern of him, "Sweet mercy," as Aggie was trying to stifle her laughter and feel sorry for Branch at the same time. Branch tipped his hat as he said, "Morning, ma'am. Tiny ma'am. Sheriff, Little Clampers, Master ma'am." Aggie then asked, "Branch, by all that is trolly, what are you doing, and why are you wearing that costume"? Aggie had to turn her head away to silently laugh as Branch replied, "Just surveyin' the prairie and wondering' "Will I tame it today, or will it tame me"? He shot a serious expression as Smidge, Aggie, and Clampers facepalmed, Poppy's blush grew hotter, and Delta sighed and shook her head, saying, "Oh y'all sweet, innocent troll." Aggie commented, "Well, at least whatever you're doing is making your fiancee blush, so keep it up, Branch, I think."
Delta then walked up to Branch while saying, "You mighty seem ta be getting into this here country thing, Branch. Ay certainly hope ya don't let it get ta ya head. Rodeos are naw picnics, aftuurr all." Clampers then said, "Seems like you a-havin' fun. Ay...think"? Branch replied, "Darn, tootin'! It turns out I have a lot in common with the Country tribe." Aggie was curious as she asked, "Really? Name three things you have in common with them." Delta was interested in hearing his response as she said while crossing her arm, "This here oughta be darn good," as Clampers mimicked her aunt's actions. Branch then answered, 'Well, I'm resourceful, hard-working, and I always wear a hat." Smidge commented, "You never wear a hat," as she and Aggie facepalmed, but just before Delta could have a word with Branch, a horseshoe struck him in the back of the head, making him hold his head in pain and ask, "Dang. Where'd that horseshoes come from"? Buckaroo came by, saying, "Sawry about that there, Branch. Ayy couple av the younger folks was a-playin' horseshoes, ayn' one av them done gave ayy toss bigger than ayy country troll mile." As she picked up the horseshoes, she saw that Delta and Clampers were with them. She smiled, saying with excitement, "Delta! Clampers! It's been too awful long"! Delta and Buckaroo shared a laugh as they trotted up to one another and high-hoofed each other with both their front hooves before sharing a hug. Clampers came up to Buckaroo, saying, "Me too! Me too"! Buckaroo lifted one of her hooves so Clampers can high-hoof Buckaroo with both of her tiny hooves. Buckaroo then picked up Clampers and hugged the little country troll before placing her on top of her hat while asking Delta, "How's everything back at Lonesome Flats? Did the little rascal we sent ya give ya any trouble"?
Delta answered, "Whel, y'all mighty know how ta faand fighters, but we were able ta wrangle him ayn' give him ayy darn good sentencing. He done won't be getting out faw ayy whahl." As the two caught up with one another, Aggie helped Branch up, saying, "Still think you have a lot in common with the country trolls because I don't see you high-hoofing your friends." Branch replied, "You get the gist of it. Besides, Holly, Gust, and Buckaroo said I'm special...special...special...special...and honestly, no one's ever said that about me before." Poppy finally snapped out of her blushing comatose as she exclaimed, "What? Branch, I say you're special all the time"! Aggie added, "Me too. And there are a lot of other trolls who think the same way." Branch then stated, "Yeah, but you say that to everyone. It's never stuck on one person in particular." Before Poppy could protest, Aggie brought up, "He does make a good point. You do kind of say that to everyone." Branch then stretched and said, "Well, pardon my sassafras y'all, but sure as the honey's on the haystack, I got rodeo tryouts." Everyone watched him leave as Clampers commented, "Weird," with Smidge and Poppy saying in unison, "You said it." Buckaroo tipped her hat gently as she picked up Clampers while saying, "What in tarnashun done got into him? Ayn' where'd he get ayy wild costume like that there? Hopefully, it don't make him mess up at the tryouts. Gust says he's something special, ayn' it done came frawum his gut, so ya know that there he's bound ta be raheet." Delta shrugged her arms, saying, "Honestly, ay don't know whether ta be sawry faw him aw ta tell him that there he should just give it his all as him ayn' nahwt a-tryin' ta act like us."
Suddenly, Aggie felt a vision coming as it showed Aggie riding what looked like a raging butterfly while Branch was lassoing it down. Once her vision ended, she stumbled back a bit as Buckaroo said, "Uh oh. Ay know that there look. Aggie's a-seein' something that's bound ta happen agayn. Anothuurr one ov them visions." Smidge and Poppy gasped as Aggie said, "Buckaroo's right, but this one was weird. I was riding a butterfly, but it looked pretty mad, and Branch was trying to lasso it down. But as far as I'm concerned, aren't butterflies supposed to be nice"? Delta gasped as she said, "Unless...it's Fluffy," which made all three country trolls gasp, while Clampers shouted, "No! Not Fluffy"! Smidge asked in confusion, "Um...who's Fluffy, and why do you guys look scared of her"? Buckaroo answered, "Fluffy is this here caterpillar that there's a-growin' into one ov the fiercest butterflies we've evuurr done had! Once it transfawms, only those there worthy enough are done allowed ta ride it"! Delta took charge, saying, "Raheet. Poppy, Smidge. You two come with me. We'll keep watch av the shed where Fluffy is a-growin' ayn' make sure naw one, nahwt even Branch, comes ta mess with it. Buckaroo, Clampers, Aggie, y'all two keep an eye on Branch. Make sure he doesn't get into any trouble during the tryouts." Buckaroo and Aggie both tipped their hats as Buckaroo said, "Ya got it, boss," as Aggie added, "You can count on us," as Clampers nodded excitedly. Aggie hopped onto Buckaroo while she galloped after Branch as Clampers ran after the duo to follow them.
At tryouts, Gust was telling everyone how they would be evaluated on three main skills: Pinata lassoing, catching a greasy balloon and hugging a wild, raging adorabull. Buckaroo and Aggie just in time to see Gust introduce the participants to Fluffy, who was just a small little caterpillar. Aggie, in disbelief, asked, "Wait. That's the dangerous thing that I saw"? Buckaroo replied, "Don't let its cute size fool ya. Once it becomes ayy butterfly, it becomes something ov ayy wild hawse." With that, tryouts were underway, and at first, Branch was fully confident that he could pass every event and secure his place in the rodeo. However, over the course of the tryouts, he failed in each event miserably. He was unable to lasso a pinata. He landed on the greasy balloon and ended up getting chased by three adorabulls before they piled onto him in a crushing group hug. Each time Branch messed up, Clampers, Buckaroo, and Aggie had to either wince in discomfort, close their eyes in fear, or stick their tongues out in disgust at how bad Branch was doing, despite Holly and Gust's best efforts to motivate him.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Does He Got What It Takes~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~'
Holly: He can do it! Yeah, he's got it! Yeah, he got what it takes!
Gust: He can make it! He will take on all the pressure! He won't break!
Holly and Gust: And you can't fake it! No, not at this rodeo! So, let me see your stuff!
Does he got what it takes to make it? You'll be a cowboy yet at this here rodeo!
Does he got what it takes to make it? Now, can he win it all and bring that glory? Bring that glory home!
Aggie: Branch is trying! Yeah, he's really trying! But it looks like he ain't fit for this kind of thing!
Buckaroo: Despite his efforts, he is left hurt! But he won't falter! He won't quit! And he won't sing!
Clampers, Buckaroo, and Aggie: But I think he won't make it to this here rodeo! 'Cause I don't think that he is tough enough!
He don't got what it takes to make it! He won't be a cowboy yet at this here rodeo!
He don't got what it takes to make it! I don't think he can win it all and bring that glory! Bring that glory home!
Holly: We know you have it in you (Aggie: Poor Branch's getting thrown around!)!
Gust: Just get back up and move on through (Buckaroo: 80th time he hits the ground!)!
Holly and Gust: Show everyone what you can do (Clampers: Ouch! That bruise will last till the morn'!)!
'Cause we all be sticking with you too (Clampers, Buckaroo, Aggie: Ooh! Poor Branch is torn!)!
All: Does he got/He don't got what it takes to make it?! You'll be a/He won't be a cowboy yet at this here rodeo! Does he got/He don't got what it takes to make it?! Now, can he win it all?/We don't think he can win it all and bring that glory? Bring that glory home!
After a miserable tryout, an exhausted Branch was laying on the ground as Holly came up to him, saying, "Whel, Branch, if that there weren't just the mowst effort ay've evuurr saw at ayy tryout, then, ay don't know what"! Branch painfully replied, "So, I made it"? Holy placed her hands up, saying, "Oh, sugar, no! No, no, no, no! It wouldn't be safe." As Branch got up, he said in slight disbelief, "But, I have something special...special...special...special...Gust, your gut said so itself"! Gust replied, "True, but Branch, listen to your gut is far from a flawless decision-making system." His gut started to act up again as Gust commented, "Honestly, I wonder if it only does that 'cause I'm hungry. Huh. What a world." As Holly and Gust left, leaving a solemn Branch all alone, Aggie, Clampers, and Buckaroo came up to him as Aggie said, "Hey, Branch. Cheer up. You did your best, and that's all that matters most." Buckaroo added, "Yeah. Besides, naw one evuurr gets into thay ...uhh rodeo on theuurr first try. Only ayy few lucky trolls have that first-tahm knack faw it." Clampers then asked, "Detective, didn't ya first get into the rodeo at my age ayn' done went on ta be ayy twelve-tahm winnuurr aftuurr winning y'all's first year"? Buckaroo blushed and tipped her hat in embarrassment as Branch sighed while Aggie tried to help him cheer up, saying, "Hey, don't mind that. Maybe with some practice, you could be a part of the rodeo next year." Hearing Aggie say practice, he started to get an idea as he said, "Practice...yeah...practice! I got something special...special...special...special...and the only way other trolls are going to see that is if I practice! Aggie, you're a genius! Thanks," as he ran off in a different direction. Everyone looked at him dumbfoundedly as Clampers commented, "Well, at least he ain't disappointed no more."
For the rest of the day, Branch spent his time practicing his lassoing, so hopefully, if he could perfect a trick in front of Holly and Gust, then he could join the rodeo. His session lasted all night too, and by morning, when Poppy went to check on him, his eyes were bloodshot. As Branch explained his reason for staying up all night, Poppy sighed, commenting, "Branch, honey, I don't think this is a good idea. Why don't you-," but at that moment, Branch saw Holly and Gust. He called their names and showed them that he could toss the lasso perfectly. However, Branch missed the pinata and ended up pulling on the tail of an adorabull. Branch knew what was going to happen next as he said, "Oh no," as the bull ran wild, knocking him into the sky as it ran off in a separate direction. Delta, who saw this happen, shouted, "We've got a runaway! After him," as she, Clampers, and Buckaroo galloped after the raging beast. Gust shouted, "Holly, let's go too," but as he started to gallop, his foot stepped on a plank board that led to a barrel where Aggie was sitting, sending the Magical Musical Troll flying faster than a rocket. Everyone called out Aggie's name in a panic as Aggie soared through the sky, landing on top of the adorabull, much to Delta's shock and Buckaroo's concern. Aggie screamed as she said, "How do you stop this crazy thing?! Someone get me off! Help"! The adorabull began jumping around, trying to buck her off while Aggie was hanging on for dear life. Buckaroo lassoed both her front braids and landed them on its horns before pulling back, trying to get the adorabull to stay still and stop moving around so much. Clamper's bit Branch's lasso off its tail while Delta helped Buckaroo pull the beast down. Then, Aggie remembered something from tryouts yesterday and got a risky idea. She laid down on its back on her stomach and tried to hug it, and luckily, it seemed to work as it stopped its rampage, smiled, and calmed right down.
All the residents gathered around to witness what had just happened as Aggie cautiously fluttered down, with Clampers running up to her and tackling her in a big hug, shouting, "Cousin Aggie's safe"! Aggie smiled and found herself laughing as Branch came up to her, asking, "Are you ok"? Aggie nodded while Delta and Buckaroo helped her up once Clampers left her arms. Back on her feet, Buckaroo commented, "Hoo-doggy! Ay haven't seen anyone wrangle an adorabull like that there in ayy awful long time"! Delta added while swinging her arm around Aggie, "Those there was some mighty fine moves ya had, Aggie. Ay ken only imagine thay look on Trollex's face if he saw ya tame that there adorabull. He'd fall head ovuurr fins faw such ayy awful strong, dependable troll." Aggie blushed and gently shoved Delta, shouting, "Delta," as the Lonesome Flats leader and her detective shared a chuckle over the little joke. Then, Holly joined in, saying, "Gerl, you got that adorabull calmer than an indoor tumbleweed"! Gust then commented, "I got to say, Aggie. You're something special." That one little word was what made Branch realize that Buckaroo mentioned that Poppy said that everyone was special. It was now applying to him as well.
Before he knew it, Aggie was using a lasso perfectly as she tipped her rainbow cowgirl hat before catching a pinata, ripping it open with ease. Aggie smiled as she asked, "Well, how was that"? Holly shouted, "Yeehaw! Gerl, you are an easy shoo-in for the rodeo! You are gonna knock every troll's socks off"! Aggie smiled as Gust chuckled, adding, "You can say that again"! Delta joined in and lifted her, with help from Buckaroo, shouting, "All hail the newest addition to the Country Corral Rodeo," as they all tossed her up and down while shouting, "Hip, hip, yee-haw"! Aggie was enjoying this but couldn't help noticing Branch, who watched from the sidelines. Poppy was there, trying to comfort him as she said, "Hon, I know this is hard for you. But I gotta say, I am glad you were able to put this behind and move forward, being supportive for our friend." However, just as Poppy finished her sentence, Branch ran off, heading straight for the shed. Poppy shouted, "Branch, what are you doing," as he shouted in response, "I gotta prove to them that I'm still special. And I'll prove it by doing the hardest rodeo challenge of them all...wrangling Fluffly"! The name's sound made Aggie flap her wings and spot Branch opening the door, which revealed that the caterpillar was now a cocoon. She shouted, "Oh no! Branch's about to release Fluffy," which made the country trolls turn their head and witness this for themselves. The cocoon started to crack and reveal a ginormous, hairy, aggravated monster. One look at the butterfly was enough to make Branch close the door behind him, but before any help could arrive, Fluffy broke free and started to chase after Branch. Aggie flew after then as the country trolls galloped after it on land, with Poppy riding Holly. Clampers poked out from her mother's hair and jumped high, biting the butterfly in the leg.
However, it proved ineffective as the butterfly picked Clampers off her leg as the small child nervously smiled and waved at it. Fluffy, not amused, threw Clampers as she screamed while Delta cried out in concern, "Clampers, no"! Aggie zipped past the butterfly and made a nosedive for Clampers. Going as fast as her wings would flap, she reached her hands out to grab Delta's niece. In determination, she shouted, "This is for you, Aunt Delta"! Right before they hit the ground, Aggie grabbed Clampers and pulled up, creating a sonic rainboom that created a huge, rainbow explosion, making the country trolls stop and hold onto their hats for dear life and the butterfly to stop and recoil back in pain and from getting temporarily blown back. Branch, seeing that the butterfly stopped chasing him, watched as Aggie zipped around the butterfly, now with a rainbow trail being created as she flew, as he muttered, "Wow...Holly and Gust are right. She really is special." Aggie then grabbed her lasso and shouted in her best country accent, "Can't play now because it looks like your schedule is...tied up," as she caught the beast and ended up riding on its back as it started chasing Branch again, who commented, "Aw, come on! How is she good at the lingo"?! While Branch ran for his life, Aggie and Clampers remained on the butterfly's back as Aggie told Clampers, "Take the neck! I got its back"! Clampers nodded and steadily walked to the base of the butterfly's neck as Aggie counted, "1, 2, 3"! They both hugged the butterfly at the same time, making Fluffy calm down and land safely, no longer on a rampage.
Once back on the ground, Clampers jumped down and ran towards her aunt, shouting, "Delta," while the country tribe leader picked up her niece and hugged her, saying, "Oh, Clampers! Thank heavens you're okay"! Aggie climbed down and was breathing heavily, saying, "Finally. Any longer and my pixilated heart would be beating so fast. You wouldn't even track it." Branch came up to her and said, "Wow, Aggie. You're really amazing at this rodeo stuff." Aggie tipped her hat and said, "Well, I am the Master of All Music, so when a friend's in need, I'll help indeed." The other country trolls surrounded Aggie and lifted her, carrying her to celebrate as Holly came up to Branch, asking, "What in Troll Nation were ya thinking, Branch? Tacking Fluffly out there on ya own like that"?! Branch sighed as he solemnly responded, "I'm sorry, guys. I wanted to show you that I was special, but I should've known better than to do something like that." Gust and Holly looked at one another and smiled as Gust stated, "Branch, we told you. You still have that something special. You just have to work a little harder. And hard work, well, that's about the most country troll thing you can do."
Delta then came over, still holding Clampers, as she said, "Besides, we've all done made honest mistakes befawe. But we ken use them ta learn ayn' grow, sharpening our skills faw the bettuurr." Buckaroo even added, "That there's the western way ov a-doin' things. Y'all keep working at it until y'all let it shahn brightuurr than the stars in the sky." Branch started to feel much better as he then grabbed his lasso and began practicing his lasso skills again, this time, being able to land his lasso on the pinata and being able to pull it open. Poppy came up to him, saying, "Branch, I think it's great you've finally stopped trying to prove yourself and- that's not what's happening, is it"? Branch shook his head, saying, "No, no. That's what happening." He reshot his lasso and got another pinata as he said excitedly, "I did it! Well, pour some honey on the haystack." Poppy was cheering with Branch, but after hearing the lingo, she commented, "Quit while you're ahead, "leaving Branch to ponder on maybe not using the lingo soon...or at all!
