Family Stories

Poppy was wide awake in bed and it was really late, she hadn't been able to sleep and she went to bed extra early. Being queen means sacrificing your sleep schedule, and she's been trying to make up for it...but it was a lot harder than she thought it would be.

Viva: Poppy...?

Poppy sat up and saw Viva standing at her doorway.

Viva: ¿Qué te pasa, hermanita? What's the matter?

Poppy: Oh Viva...I just can't seem to sleep, my mind's racing like a minecart.

Viva sat on the edge of her little sister's bed and brushed her bangs back.

Viva: Pobrecita...I think I know what'll help.

Poppy: What...?

Viva took a frame out of her hair and showed it to Poppy.

Viva: Have I ever told you about Mom, Poppy?

Poppy looked at the photo and held it in her hands.

Viva: That's her.

Poppy: Really...?

Viva: Yeah...you would've really liked her.

Poppy looked up at Viva, then back at the photo in her hands.

Poppy: ...What was she like, Viva?

Viva: Oh chica, you would've loved her, she was the sweetest Troll I knew...she never gave up on you...even when she was pregnant with you.

Viva laid down next to Poppy, their hands both linking together.

Poppy: Really...?

Viva: Mom wasn't a quitter...I think you get you unbroken spirit from her, Poppy.

Poppy: You think so?

Viva looked at Poppy and gently touched her cheek.

Viva: You really look like her...you have all her features, I see a bit of her in you.

Poppy looked down as soon as Viva said that, then she looked at the photo. She really did look like her late mom...she had all the same facial features she did, the only difference was her hair and freckles.

Poppy: I wish I could've known her, Vivi, the way you describe her makes me wish she were still here.

Viva: ...Hey, Poppy, mind if I take you somewhere?

Poppy: Where?

Viva: Trust me.

Viva took Poppy's hand and led her outside. She took her up a high hill and they sat down together, overlooking all of Pop Village and getting a perfect view of the starry sky.

Poppy: What's this, Viva?

Viva: This is where Mom used to take me when I was little. Whenever I couldn't sleep, she would just bring me up here.

Poppy looked up at the night sky and saw a few shooting stars shoot across the sky.

Poppy: It's beautiful...hey, Viva?

Viva: ¿Sí?

Poppy: Do you ever wonder how things would've turned out if Mom were still here? I mean...I don't know much about her, but if she were here, I would've been able to spend my whole life getting to know her and...y'know, do some mother daughter bonding. I was never able to contribute to any Mother's Day activities growing up, 'cause...y'know. I had to sit it out every year.

Viva suddenly turned away letting go of Poppy's hand, tears began to form in her eyes.

Poppy: Viva...?

Viva: Huh? Oh...I-I'm fine.

Poppy: ...What's wrong? Did I say something to hurt you?

Viva: U-Um...it's not that, just having flashbacks.

Poppy: About Mom?

Viva: Yeah...did I ever tell you what happened to her?

Poppy: No...and Dad never told me anything...whenever I asked him about Mom, he wouldn't say anything. You seem to have an idea, what happened?

Viva: Well...this was just 3 months after you were born, Poppy, but...we lost her on Trollstice.

Poppy's eyes widened, but she wanted to know what happened next.

Poppy: You mean the day the Trolls escaped Bergen Town?

Viva: Yeah...I don't usually think about how things could've turned out differently.

Poppy: Why not?

Viva: Because...because if it hadn't been for Mom...you wouldn't be here.

Poppy gasped softly, her hand flying to her mouth.

Viva: See...Poppy, that day...the next Troll that would be fed to a Bergen...was you.

Poppy: What...?

Viva: Yeah...Mom and Dad said they needed to leave if you were to survive, and well...Dad probably told you about his escape, right?

Poppy: Yeah...?

Viva: Well...he didn't tell you everything.

Poppy: What do you mean? Tell me.

Viva sighed and pulled Poppy into a hug, cradling her head against her chest.

Viva: While everyone was escaping through the tunnels, I suddenly remember that you were still at the Troll Tree. Mom and I both went back to get you.

Poppy: Yeah...?

Viva: We were so close to getting eaten by the Bergens, but luckily, me and a few other Trolls were able to fight them off.

Poppy: Yeah...?

Viva: But then I saw a Bergen hand lowering right towards you, and I was too far away to get you out of there...Mom stepped in. She picked you up and handed you to the other Trolls to pass down to Dad, but she ended up getting grabbed instead. I saw her get taken right before my eyes...and I couldn't go back to Dad because...well...the tunnels collapsed and I was cut from you guys.

Poppy's eyes widened when Viva told her story...she couldn't imagine what she had gone through back then, it must've been so terrifying to see a loved one die before you...but the worst part...she was so close to losing her life. It was a miracle that she was still alive today.

Viva: Poppy...? You okay?

Poppy nodded and buried her face in her older sister's chest, Viva heard her sniffling and her heart instantly broke.

Viva: I'm sorry, Poppy...it's too painful to talk about...I didn't realize it would affect you that much though.

Viva kissed the top of her head and gently caressed her back. Poppy continued to cry softly, haunted by how close she was to being Bergen food that very day.

Poppy: I never got to know her, Viva...I never got to know her...

Viva: I'm so sorry, Poppy...but I can tell you how you can remember her.

Poppy looked up at Viva, tears still pouring from her eyes.

Viva: ...Mom was a warrior, little sis.

Poppy: Really...?

Viva: She was brave enough to risk her own life for you, not everyone can be that brave. You have her warrior spirit.

Poppy: I do...?

Viva: Yeah...you're not afraid of anything...and I can see the little warrior in you, you're just like Mom.

Poppy wiped away her tears and hugged Viva tightly. Although the girls' mother wasn't with them now, Poppy had every piece of her spirit in her, and that was something to be proud of. Knowing her late mother was a warrior and that she was willing to do everything just for her put her at ease. It made her feel content knowing that although her mom wasn't here, she had someone by her side who could tell her everything she wanted to know about her, her big sister.
