oh right i had another spam earlier heres what was in that

"cecil/carlos and kevin/charles parallel in several different ways. obviously, they're literally two of the same person dating the other two of the other person. kevin has always paralleled cecil and this relationship is no different, however the way they parallel on buildup is incredibly interesting.

cecil and carlos getting together, going on their first date, getting married, even just referencing their relationship- this is all so satisfying because of the buildup to it. we watched cecil's crush on carlos develop, and we watched carlos's feelings change. cecil's feelings for carlos were so strong and so frequently brought up, and unrequited for a whole year- seeing carlos return those feelings in one year later felt perfect and satisfying. every moment after that as their relationship came into its own was such a lovely moment, such a lovely contrast to the moment before it and such a lovely contrast to the moment after. toast hit so hard because the contrast between cecil falling hopelessly in love in the pilot, complaining on the radio about how stupid he sounded talking to his crush in the phone call, and going on a nervous first date in first date, to this wedding where they're so happy and comfortable and in love with one another and have developed so much- it feels perfect, and satisfying, and like the thing you were rooting for all this time finally came to pass.

charles and kevin don't have that same buildup with regards to their relationship. they get together incredibly quickly, and hit all the milestones that carlos and cecil took much longer to take (mutual expressed feelings, first date, sex ((because although carlos and cecil dont mention when their first time was as i recall, one can be fairly sure that it didnt happen two episodes in)), a steady relationship) over the span of two to three episodes. theres even a few jokes about it, most notably the line about how kevin's rhetorical questions (which are slightly changed quotes from the pilot) are incredibly easy to answer. we were never rooting for them to get together, because they took a very short amount of time to do so.

that doesn't mean there was no buildup. the difference is where the buildup takes place. instead of starting after they meet, with cecil and carlos, the buildup to charles and kevin's relationship started long before charles was ever introduced.

kevin has had so many things taken from him by strexcorp, but one of the biggest was companionship, romantic or otherwise. all of kevin's important positive relationships are indirectly ruined by strexcorp in some way, as follows:

1.  intern vanessa. intern vanessa's death stands out on this list because their friendship wasn't necessarily ended by strexcorp- if vanessa was dana's double then dana ended it, and if vanessa wasn't then we can't be entirely sure. however, strexcorp is a large part of why he's unable to cope with her death.

2.  cecil palmer. cecil and kevin's relationship ended before it could begin- quite literally, since cecil's negative feelings for strex kevin started in episode 19 and his positive feelings for pre-strex kevin didnt start until 73, about two to three years later. like cecil said- pre-strex kevin is the friend cecil never had.

3. carlos. carlos is the biggest example of this, because we got to see it the most. kevin's brainwashing from strexcorp is a large part of their friendship failing, and i could go on forever ab this but im oddly shaky so nah

charles and kevin's relationship, though, isnt like that. its a relationship in which kevin has someone who cares for him, someone who sees him, someone who is in his life and who kevin can and does change for and growfor while still being appreciated for the positive parts of himself. this is something kevin hasn't had in years, not since strexcorp took over (or at the very least since vanessa died). lauren mallard certainly doesn't fit the bill. the mudstone abyss is the satisfying ending kevin needed. the buildup doesn't lie in the relationship in the way its counterpart does, but in everything before it. idk where im going with this but its 600 words so ill keep it in

imagine you ship lauren and kevin in 2018. you go to check the episode list and you see a new episode with a desert bluffs icon and kevin r free listed as the top actor. "aha!" you say to yourself. "perhaps my horrifically unhealthy ship that i lack the ability to think critically about will go canon! i mean, the last episode kevin and lauren were in was decently amicable except for certain scenes, which totally excuses the fact that lauren is directly responsible for kevin's trauma! sure that slight niceness was annoying because it meant they weren't having hhh (hot hetero hatesex), but perhaps thats where the writers are going with this! my hopes are high!" and then you watch mudstone abyss part 1 wherein kevin spends half his time calling lauren a piece of shit and the other half gushing ab his future boyfriend
