7 - Right Before A Thought
Foolish was physically 15. Mentally, however, he had lived many lives. Similar to Karl, Foolish was a being of the Inbetween, a place that acts as the glue for reality, time, and death. While Karl was affiliated with time, Foolish was brought forth from death. He was a being able to revive the dead and heal fatal wounds. He had seen many nations, transversing for eons and eons. Whenever he would die, he would be remade into an altered form somewhere else. Now, Foolish reflected, he was part shark. It was odd to him, but he loved swimming in most of his previous lives so it wasn't a bother.
On his first few days of living his new life, Foolish was found by a captain. The woman with rainbow hair took Foolish in, treating him like the child he looked like. The woman adopted Foolish, becoming his mother who he called 'Papa' ironically. Foolish didn't have the heart to tell his Papa that he was technically older than her, so he relished in having a childhood with a caring adult.
Now, as a 15 year old, Foolish was following his Papa. She had asked Foolish to come with her while she apologized to someone, saying that Foolish was an innocent child that people naturally adored. Foolish didn't turn his Papa down, saying that he could work on his summer home at some later date.
Foolish held his Papa's hand as they stood before a dirt house built into a grassy hill. Foolish pitied whoever the home belonged to. As someone who built places, he saw the effort in the house but it was still sad. Through the windows in the French doors, Foolish saw a blonde boy walking around. Foolish recognized it as one of the people who killed him when he first spawned. Foolish was about to tell Puffy, but he saw the guilt in her eyes.
Captain Puffy slowly opened the door, leaning against the wood as she picked her head inside. Tommy looked over, giving Puffy a strange look before gesturing her inside. Puffy walked inside, Foolish following behind with his easygoing smile.
"Hey, guys, what's up?" Tommy asked, giving them a look before turning back to his melding. Foolish could see the diamond armor inside getting smithed together with netherite ingots. Tommy's face was red with effort and sleeked with sweat, his gloved hands holding the tools to work so close to the flames.
Foolish hadn't expected this. To be honest, he thought Tommy got all of his good stuff by stealing from others. It never crossed his mind that Tommy actually made his own things. Looking around, Foolish realized that Tommy was more capable than Foolish gave him credit for.
"I wanted to apologize. I didn't know the tart was poisoned. Niki said that she wasn't the one to poison it," Puffy explained, not saying how she suspected Niki had poisoned the tart anyways. Puffy didn't want to believe the suspicions so she ignored all the evidence in her head.
"It's fine, Cap. I didn't die. No harm, no foul," Tommy said, pulling out his new netherite helmet. Tommy dropped the purple armor in a tub of water, a high pitched squeal following the action. Tommy pulled his gloves off, wiping the sweat from his forehead to turn to Foolish and Puffy.
"We need to figure out who would poison you. We don't know if it will happen again. What if they succeed Tommy? What if you die?" Puffy said, eyes growing wide with worry. Foolish grabbed his Papa's hand to calm her down. Puffy smiled gratefully at Foolish before looking back at Tommy.
He didn't answer. He turned his back, pulling his gloves back on. Tommy searched a nearby chest, bringing out a diamond chest plate. Tommy pushed it into the fire, bringing out some netherite ingots. Tommy worked methodically, taking his time to seamlessly change the elemental structure of the diamond armor by transmuting with the netherite. It was a strange ability given to humans by a god from the Inbetween who could morph reality many eons ago. The ability was no longer considered a miracle. But as Foolish watched someone else do the work, he didn't understand why people didn't consider it to be magical.
"Is there something I can do for either of you? I can make some drugs if that's what you're here for," Tommy said, dropping the chest plate in the water. With his gloves removed, Tommy pulled out his helmet, weighing the armor in his hands with sharp eyes. Tommy pounded his fist against the item, smiling at the resilience before dropping the helmet in a nearby chest.
"Drugs?" Foolish blinked in surprise. Tommy turned, opening a hatch in the floor that was behind Puffy and Foolish. Tommy jumped down while Foolish and Puffy used the ladder. Foolish looked around to see several chests stacked on top of one another in a white colored underground space. Tommy gestured to a set of chemistry tubes that were placed together, and showed Foolish a chest with a stack of what Foolish assumed was the drugs.
"Tommy, no-" Puffy said, slamming the chest shut. Tommy shrugged, getting a far off look.
"I know it isn't good, but what else can one do when they feel like shit?" Tommy said with an expression that meant he didn't mean what he said as a joke. His eyes flashed with something. A feeling that Foolish couldn't pinpoint. It was there, swimming beneath his grayish blue eyes. Foolish grabbed Tommy's hand to comfort him, just like what he did with Puffy. Foolish was starting to believe that his Papa was rubbing off on him.
Foolish's hand started to glow gold, the light threading together into Tommy's skin. Foolish stared at his hand. It only did that when he was healing someone. Foolish looked to see if Tommy had any wounds that Foolish wasn't aware of.
Tommy's eyes widened, the gray deepening into a brilliant, deep blue that Foolish had to admire. That admiring was cut off when Tommy started breathing hard, shaking immediately as tears filled his pained eyes. Foolish let go of Tommy's hand, the boy falling onto his knees with his hands hitting the ground. Suddenly, his shirt was split into two from the back, red feathers formed together like wings sprouting from his back. It was a dull and light colored red, and the wings fluttered from as Tommy grimaced in pain.
"Oh my god," Puffy said, reaching for Tommy. Whenever she touched him, Tommy cried out. Foolish stared at his hands. What did he do? His powers were meant to revive and heal. This was something else entirely. Tommy now had wings and was suffering.
Puffy used the chat to call for a doctor or someone with medical expertise. It was GeorgeNotFound who came down the hatch. From underneath his goggles, Foolish could see his widening eyes. George pulled out a healing potion, forcing Tommy to take slow gulps of it. Tommy sagged with relief, pushing himself to sit on his ankles. Tommy looked at Foolish, his expression not blaming but curious.
"My power is to heal people. How did I give Tommy wings?" Foolish asked hesitantly.
"My guess is that Tommy is like his brothers in the sense that they are all part animal. Technoblade is completely a pig, and Wilbur has dormant genes that made Fundy into a fox. Tommy's genes were damaged, and your powers healed that damage. With the gene now active, the body exploded into work, creating the cellular response that fabricating wings. It hurt his body because it was new. His body was trying to quickly make the wings, his back must have sensitive skin now, and his immune system thought the wings were a foreign entity. The healing potion aided in the process of establishing the wings in the body. He should be fine now," George explained. When he got weird looks, George shrugged. "Who do you think had to heal Dream and SapNap during the war? I read a medical book or two."
"Thank you, George. Is there anything you need me to pay you with?" Puffy said, looking fascinated by Tommy's new wings. Tommy was gently petting them before his face snapped to Puffy and George.
"Hold up, this is my problem. I don't need you to pay for this," Tommy said defensively. Puffy and George ignored Tommy as they discussed prices and further treatments. Foolish leaned down to sit beside Tommy.
"Trust me, you can't stop Papa from being a caring parent," Foolish explained. Tommy seemed startled. A caring parent? That couldn't be right. Puffy didn't see him that way. Later, when everyone left, Tommy thought about what Foolish said.
"I told you that Captain Puffy cared about you. She's even like your parent!" Freya said, standing by the window in the doorway to look around.
"One would think you'd be against this. She's acting like my Mother," Tommy replied, not in the mood to convince himself that he shouldn't talk to the voice because Freya was a hallucination. Tommy was told that he was giving it power over his mental state by doing that.
"The real Freya abandoned you. This is a second chance for you to have a loving mother. Why would I stand in the way of that?" Freya asked, turning towards Tommy with a confused expression.
"She doesn't see me as her kid. I'm a nuisance to almost everyone on the Server, remember?" Tommy said in a pitiful tone.
"Not everyone! Foolish, Sam, even SapNap seem to like you just fine. Karl will always be there for you, remember?" Freya said, walking towards a chest. She pulled out an iron ingot from the chest, placing it in Tommy's palm.
The blonde raised the iron to his eyes, the dark gray reflecting back his face and firelight. The name tag read 'Listen to Your Heart'. Tommy didn't know where he got the iron from, but he never felt comfortable with throwing it away. Tommy felt a strong aura come from the small ingot, powerful enough to convince him that he shouldn't throw it out. "What does this have to do with Karl?"
"You don't remember. You don't remember a lot of things, Tommy. You will one day, when your brain is strong enough to handle the information," Freya said with a sigh before disappearing.
"Weirdo," Tommy muttered underneath his breath.
